PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY L. FERRIS, OF HARVARD, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO HUNT, HELM, FERRIS & COMPANY, OF HARVARD, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
HANGEIR AND TRACK THEREFOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Iatent No. 753,481, dated March 1, 1904.
Application filed November 27, 1903. Serial N0..182,740. (N0 model.) I
To all whom, 712'; may concern:
- Be it known that I, HENRY L. FnRRIs, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Harvard, in the county of McHenry and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hangers and Tracks Therefor, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hangers and tracks therefor; and its object is to produce devices which shall have certain advantages, which will appear more fully and at large in the course of this specification.
My invention is illustrated in the accompa nying drawings, in which Figure l is a section through my improved track, showing a hangerplaced thereon, the hanger illustrated being the upper portion of a hay-carrier; and Fig. 2 is a perspective View of a portion of my track.
Referring now to the drawings, it will be seen that the track consists of two similar portions A, which are riveted together by=rivets a. Each portion A consists of a vertical web a, an inclined web a and a horizontal web which projects upon opposite sides of the inclined web (K, the portion projecting upon one side being indicated in the drawings by a and that upon the opposite side by a. The rivets a, it will be noticed, pass through the by rods or bars, one of which is shown at B, each of these rods or bars being provided at its lower end with an enlarged head B, which lies between the inclined webs a and underneath the inwardly-projecting portions of the horizontal webs. The hangers which are used with this type of track are substantialiy similar to the double-roller hangers heretofore in use, each consisting of a suitable frame C, which has upwardly-projecting portions O,
to which are journaled pulleys G which run upon the horizontal webs of the track. These hangers preferably diifer from the hangers heretofore in use in that each upwardly-projecting portion C has an inwardly-projecting lug c, which lies underneath the outer half a This track is supported of the horizontal web and engages therewith if the hanger is tilted. This prevents the hanger from falling off the track.
I realize that tracks have heretofore been made which were composed of two symmetrical pieces of metal riveted together and that these tracks also had horizontal webs below which lay the head of the supporting rod or member, and I do not, therefore, claim such a device as my present invention. The addition, however, to such a track of the outwardly-projecting portion of the horizontal web, combined with the lugs upon the hangers which cooperate therewith, is particularly desirable, for by this means it is made entirely impossible for the hanger to fall 01f the track under any circumstances. This device is particularly desirable for use upon hay-carriers, where the load is likely to receive considerable lateral strain and may therefore upset the hanger. V
A further advantage of this track consists in the fact that the diagonal webs meet the horizontal webs substantially at their centers instead of at their outside edges, and consequently a lighter track can be made having the same width horizontal portions and the samedistance between said portions. In making a comparatively cheap track the difference in weight of material necessary to make this track and the tracks heretofore in use is very considerable, and consequently this track can be put upon the market at a lower price.
I realize that considerable variation is possible in the details of this construction without departing from the spirit of the invention, and I therefore do not intend to limit myself to the specific form herein shown and.
described.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination with a track having horizontal portions to form a double tread, separated by a practically continuous slot, of diagonally-disposed portions meeting said horizontal portions substantially at their centers,
said diagonally-disposed portions being joined at their lower edges, and a carrier having rollers adapted to run on said horizontal portions.
2. The combination with a track having horizontal portions to form a double tread, separated by a practically-continuous slot, and portions connecting said horizontal portions to leave the outer edges of the same projecting laterally, of a carrier having rollers adapted to run upon said horizontal portions, and lugs secured to said carrier and projecting under the outwardly-extending edges of said horizontal portion.
3. The combination with a traok, having horizontal portions forming a double tread, separated by a practically-continuous slot, of inclined Webs extending downwardly from said horizontal portions, substantially at their center, to leave projecting edges on each side of eachof said horizontal portions, means for supporting the track, engaging the inwardly-projecting' edges of the horizontal portions, a carrier having rollers adapted to run upon said horizontal portions and having lugs extending underneath the outer edges of 'said horizontal portions.
4. The combination with a track composed of two symmetrical pieces, each consisting of a vertical Web, a diagonal web, and a horizontal web, said horizontal web extending on both sides of the diagonal web, and the two halves of said track being riveted together by rivets passing through the vertical webs, of means engaging the inner edges of the horizontal webs for supporting the track, and a carrier having rollers running on the horizontal webs and having lugs extending underneath the outer edges thereof.
In witness whereof I have signed the above application for Letters Patent at Harvard, in the county of MeHenry and State of Illinois, this 6th day of November, A. D. 1903.
HENRY L. FERRIS.
