PATENT OFFIC EDWARD L. PITTS, OF JEROME, ARIZONA TERRITORY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM MCKENZIE PARKS, OF JEROME, ARIZONA TERRITORY.
POIVIADE-CAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Pat No. 752,586, dated February 16, 1904.
Application filed July 30, 1903- Serial No. 167,578. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD L. Prr'rs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jerome,
- in the county of Yavapai and Territory of Arizona, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Pomade-Oans, of which thefollowing is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in cans designed especially for use by barbers for holding pomade, vaseline, or the like, and has for an object to provide a simple novel construction whereby the user may be able to procure the desired amount of the pomade or Vaseline from time to time; .and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section, of a can embodying my invention. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view on about line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail enlarged section of a portion of the lower end of the plunger. Fig. 5 is a detail cross-section on about line 5 5 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the sliding cover.
In carrying out my invention I may prefer to employ a base A, having a bottom plate A and the inwardly-sloping sides A having an opening at A in which is fitted the body or main can B. This can B has its bottom B in the form of a cone and is adapted to receive the follower O, which slides at its lower end within the body B, and is provided on its outer side, near its bottom, withagroove D,
. forming a seat for a rubber or other gasket D, which packs the joint between the bottom of the plunger O and the body B and also holds the plunger O in any desired position within the body B, as will be understood from Figs. 2 and 4: of the drawings. A cap-ringE is fitted on the upper end of the body B and is provided with an inwardly-projecting flange E, which fits closely to the side of the plunger O, above the proj ection d, at the base thereof and operates to limit the upward movement of the plunger O, which latter may be removed as may be desired for replenishing the bodyB with the material to be discharged from the plunger O, as will be presently'described.
Theplunger O has the conical bottom O the plunger O, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. At
its upper end the discharge-tube C opens into a guideway F for the slide G, the latter being preferably curved in cross-section, as shown in Figs. 1, 5, and 6, and being provided at its outer end with a lip or shoulder G to facilitate the adjustment of the slide or cut-off from the position shown in Fig. 2 to that shown in Fig. 1, and the top O of the plunger O being provided with projections or portions C, which overlie the slide G and form, in connection with the curved base H for said slide, an undercut guide by which to retain the slide, as will be understood from Figs. 1, 2, and 5 of the drawings. This curved base H also forms a convenient means for distributing the Vaseline or pomade by the finger in drawing the same out from the upper end of the discharge-tube O as will be understood from Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. The projecting portion O of the top C of the plunger is arranged to overlie the inner end of the slide G when the latter is closed, as shown in Fig. 2, to aid in excluding dust and dirt when the slide is closed, as shown in Fig. 2.
In operation it will be understood that if Vaseline, pomade, or the like be supplied to the body B and the plunger be applied thereto, as shown in Fig. 2, and such plunger be depressed the Vaseline or pomade will be forced up through the discharge-tube of the plunger and discharge at the upper end into the channel provided therein and for the slide Gr. It will also be noticed that the amount of material discharged may be controlled by the pres sure upon the plunger, so that the barber or other user can secure more or less of the material, as may be desired. By my invention I avoid the opening and closing of the jar now in use and am able to exclude all dust and dirt in a simple manner.
When desired, the base A may be omitted; but I prefer to employ such base, as it gives a better finish to the device and also affords a broad base to prevent its turning over.
Manifestly the invention may be employed for holding various kinds of jellies, salves,
and the like and will permit a convenient removal thereof in any desired quantities.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The improvement herein described, consisting of the base having a base-plate, and an inwardly-sloping side provided with an opening for the body, the body fitting in said opening and having the conical bottom, the plunger sliding at its lower end within the body, and having a conical bottom corresponding to that of the body and provided at its lower end on its outer side with the packing-gasket, and having the discharge-tube extending from its conical bottom upwardly and opening at its upper end at the top of the plunger, said plunger being provided at its top with an undercut channel into which said discharge-tube opens, the slide movable in said undercut channel, and adapted to cover the upper end of the discharge-tube when adjusted to its closed position, and the cap-ring fitting on the upper end of the body, and having an inwardly-projecting flange fitting the plunger, all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. A can for pomade and the like, comprising a body, a plunger operating therein and provided with a discharge-tube communicate ing at its lower end with the interior of the body, a guideway extending laterally on opposite sides of the outer end of said dischargetube, and a slide operating in said guideway for closing the outer end of the discharge-tube, substantially as set forth.
3. A can for pomade and the like, comprising a body, a plunger slidable therein and having a discharge-tube communicating at its inner en with the interior of the body, a guideway extending laterally from the other end of said tube and a cut-off slide operating in said guideway, substantially as set forth.
4:. The combination in a can for pomade and the like, of the .body, the plunger slidable in said body, and having a discharge-tube communicating at its inner end with the interior of the body, said can having at its outer end a channel into which the outer end of the discharge-tube opens, and a cut-01f slide operating in said channel, and adjustable to position to close the outer end of the discharge-tube, substantially as set forth.
5. The can for pomade and the like, comprising a body, and a plunger sliding in said body and having a discharge-tube communicating at its inner end with the interior of the body, and provided at its outer end with a channel into which the outer end of the discharge-tube opens, substantially as set forth.
6. A can for pomade and the like, comprising the body, the plunger telescoping into said body and provided with a dischargeetube lead ing to its outer end, and with a'channel at such end into which the discharge-tube opens, and the cut-off slide movable in said channel into and out of position to close the outer end of the discharge-tube, substantially as set forth.
