PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY DUISEN, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
PLUMB AND LEVEL.
SPECIFICATION for g p r f L r P nt No. 752,535, dated February 16, 1904,
Application filed June 2'], 1903. Serial No. 163,434. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY'DUISEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Plumb and Level, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a combined plumb and level, the object being to provide an exceedingly cheap and simple device consisting of few parts so constructed and arranged that the device is not likely to get out of order.
With this object in view the invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a combined plumb and level constructed in ac cordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a face view of a portion of the stock, showing the pointer arranged in the recess, the glass and face-plate being removed. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken through the stock. Fig. i is a detail perspective view, partly in section, showinga portion of the recess, stock, and the corner-blocks arranged therein. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the pointer. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the circular plate carrying the arbor upon which the pointer turns. Fig. 7 is a detail view of said arbor. Fig. 8 is a detail perspective view of Fig. 9 is a view-of the glass held in place bythe face-plate.
In carrying out my invention I employ a stock A, which is substantially similar to the stock of an ordinar; level. In the face of this stock is produced a square recess A, and fit-v ting in the corners of the recess are the blocks B, cut away, as shown at B, so that when the blocks are arranged in four corners of the recess a substantially circular subrecess will be provided, spaces C being left free between the ends of the corner-blocks. A circular plate D is adapted to fit in thecircular subrecess, said plate having a central threaded aperture D, and this plate is also provided with four angular extensions E, which fit into the spaces C, the outer ends of said angular extensions lying flush with the outer surface of the corner-blocks B. An arbor F is connected to the circular plate D, said arbor having a threaded end F, which engages or screws into the threaded aperture D, and this arbor is also formed with a shoulder F The pointer or indicator G has a central opening G, through which the arbor passes, the outer end of said arbor being threaded, as shown at F and upon which the nut H is screwed. The pointer G 'is essentially triangular in shape, although it may be any shape desired so long as the upper end is pointed and the lower end heavier than the upper end, so as to maintain the pointer in a perpendicular position at all times.
I indicates a piece of glass which is adapted to fit within the recess A, the corners of the glass being removed, so that the fasteningscrews can be passed through the face-plate and cornerblocks into the stock, thereby avoiding the necessity of drilling holes in the glass. K indicates the face-plate, having a circular opening K and corner-openings K through which the screws pass, and the corner-blocks B are also providedwith apertures B through which the fastening-screws pass.
It will thus be seen that all ofthe parts of my combined plumb and level are so constructed and arranged that the device is not at all likely I to get out of order, and it is also obvious thatblocks arranged in said recess, a plate arranged also in the recess and provided with extensions resting between the corner-blocks, a pointer or indicator connected to the plate, a glass and face-plate secured within the recess, substantially as described.
2. A'combined plumb and level comprising face-plate for securing the said parts in place, substantially as set forth.
HENRY DUISEN.
