Be it known that I, ALEXANDER WALKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Whatcheer, in the county of Keokuk and State of Iowa, have invented newv and useful Improvements in Mining-Drills for Coal or Rock, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to mining-drills for coal or rock, and especially to that type of such drills shown and described in Letters Patent of the United States granted to J esse N. Southwick and myself on the 30th day of J une, 1896, No. 563,087, and to myself on the 19th day of February, 1901, No. 668,593.
The purpose of the present invention is to provide improved meansfor lubricating the threaded drill-rod and boxing in such manner that coal-dust, grit, andthe like will be effectually prevented vfrom gaining access to the interior of the boxing, to spline the bevelgear that rotates the drill-rod on the latter in such manner as to aid in preventing the threads on the `drill-rod from binding in the hub of the gear-wheel or the threads of the boxing, to give more stability to the. drill-rod and to avoid weakening the latter, and finally to improve the manner of fitting lthe crank to the driving-shaft or spindle and the drill-socket to the ends of the drill-rod.
To these ends my invention consists in the features and in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims following the description, reference being had to the. accompanying drawings, forming a part ofthis specication, wherein- Figure lis a plan view of the improved drill, the boxing being shown open. The two halves of the boxing when closed areheld in theirA closed position by a pin 10, which is inserted in perforatedlugs 1l, formed on the free edge of one of the halves of the boxing, and projects over a lug 12, formed on the corresponding edge of the other half of the boxing.
The numeral 13 indicates the drill-rod, which is threaded, as shown, and fits in the boxing, the threads of the drill-rod engaging and working in the threadsof the boxing. Formed in the inner threaded surface of the two halves 1 and 2 of the boxing are semicircular grooves orY recesses 14C, said recesses ,when the `two halves are closed registering with each other and forming practically a single continuous annular recess. As shown, said recesses are formed intermediate the ends'l of the two sections 1 and 2, whereby they are in'closed on both sides by threaded portions of said sections. In practice grease or other suitable lubricant is placed in the recesses 14 and operates to lubricate the drill-rod and the threaded portion of the boxing. By the arrangement described coal-dust, grit, and the like are effectually prevented-from gain-ing access to the boxing by the threaded portions closelyl itting thedrill-rod, which would not' be the case if the lubricant was introduced through an oil-hole formed in the boxing in the usual manner. y
Formed longitudinally in the drill-rodv isa V-shaped groove 15, which extends throughout the threaded portion of the drill-rod, and loosely fitted on the drill-rod is a bevel-gear 16, the hub of which is provided internally with a radially and inwardly projecting spline or feather 17, V-shaped in cross-section, which loosely iits in the correspondingly-shaped groove l5 in the drill-rod. Thedrill-rod and bevel-gear 16 are thus caused torotate in unison, while the drill-rod is free to move longitudinally in said bevel-gear.
Each end of the drill-rod is reduced, as at' 18, and the two opposite sides of each of said reduced ends are planed off parallel with each other or flattened, as shown, whereby each of said reduced ends is provided with two oppositely-disposed flat and parallel sides 19 and two segment-shaped oppositely-disposed sides 20. The outer end of the shaft 8 is formed in the same manner-that is to say, is provided with two fiat sides 21 and two segment-shaped sides 22. Adapted to be fitted on the outer end of the shaft 8 is a crank 23, provided with a plurality of apertures 24, each of said apertures corresponding in shape to the shape in cross-section of the outer end of the shaft.
The crank may be fitted on the shaft in such' manner that the shaft may engage either of said apertures. Fixed or welded on the end of the drill or auger 25 is a head 26, provided with a socket 27, corresponding in shape to the cross-sectional shape ofthe ends 18 of the drill-rod, so that said head may be fitted on either end of the drill-rod.
The operation of my improved drill is as follows: The drill having been fixed in position, the crank is turned in the proper direction and through the medium of the shaft 8 and bevelgear 9 rotates the bevel-gearl. The bevelgear 16 in turn rotates the drill-rod, and the latter, engaging the threaded boxing, is at the same time fed forward. Heretofore it has been customary to spline the bevel-gear 0n the drill-rod by a rib or feather rectangular in cross-section which is loosely fitted in a rectangular groove formed in the drill-rod. By providing the bevel-gear witha spline V-shaped in cross-section and fitting itin a correspondingly V-shaped groove in the drill-rod the operative sides of the spline lie radially relative to the drill-rod, thus exerting a pressure on said rod in the direction of its rotation after l the manner of the capstan-bars of'a windlass,
whereby the power is most economically and advantageously applied. Furthermore, by applying the power by means of a V-shaped spline fitting in a V-shaped groove in the manner described the strain is exerted radially about the-axial center of the drill instead of tangentially, as is the case where the spline is rectangular, thus materially assisting in preventing the threads from binding owing to the lateral thrust of the drill-rod which would otherwise occur. Again, -by making the groove V-shaped less metal is removed from the drill-rod, and the thickness of the metal between the bottom of the groove and the periphery of the drill-rod is much greater than would be the case if the groove was rectangular, thus materially adding to the strength of the rod. By fitting the crank on the shaft in the manner shown and described instead of forming the end of the shaft square or polygonal the two segment-shaped sides of the shaft add considerably to thesectional area of the shaft, and hence to its strength.'

3. In a drilling-machine, the combination with a threaded drill-rod, of a boxing for the drill vcomprising two semicylindrical sections hinged together along one edge and each provided centrally upon its interior with a semiannular recess, saidv sections being internally threaded on both sides of said recesses, the two recesses, when theboxing'is closed, registering and forming a continuous annular recess for the reception of lubricant, and the threads on the two sections also registering to form continuous threads forv engaging the threaded drill-rod.
4. In a drilling-machine, the combination with a threaded drill-rod, of a boxing for the drill comprising two imperforate semicylindrical sections hinged together along one edge and each provided centrally upon its interior with a semi-annular recess, said sections being internally threaded on both sides of said recesses, the two recesses, when the boxing is closed, registering and forming a continuous annular recess for the reception of lubricant, and the threads on the two sections also registering to form continuous threads for engaging a threaded drill-rod.
5. In a drilling-machine, the combination with a threaded drill-rod, of a boxing for the drill comprising two imperforate semicylindrical sections hinged together along one edge and each provided centrallyupon its interior with a semi-annular recess, said sections being internally threaded on both sides of the said recess, the recesses being deeper than the threads, the two recesses, when the boxing is closed, registering 4and forming a continuous annular recessv for the reception of lubricant and the threads on the two sections also registering to form continuous threads for engaging a threaded drill-rod. i
6.
