UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERMANN STAPELMANN, OF SHAWNEE, OHIO.
DRILLING -MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 632,594, dated September 5, 1899.
Application filed May 26, 1897. Serial No. 638,265. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMANN STAPELMANN, of Shawnee, in the county of Perry and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drillin -Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in drilling-machines, and more particularly to the manner-of feeding the threaded shaft, the object of the same being to provide a cheaper construction and arrangement that will permit the threaded portion of the boxing to be renewed without having to renew the whole boxing, and also provides for reversing the parts in starting the drill again.
With the above objects in view the invention consists in providing a two-part boxing presentingacentral cavity and opposite openings and a removable nut seated within the cavity to engage the shaft which is passed therethrough, the opposite ends of the shaft being flattened to receive the bit and having a longitudinal channel or recess by which the gear-wheel of the driving mechanism is connected therewith.
In the following specification I have entered into a detail description of the invention, reference being had'to the accompanying drawings, and to numerals thereon which designate the different parts, and what I consider to be the novel features of construction are specifically set forth in the claim.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of so much of a drilling-machine as will illustrate my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail View of the two-part boxing. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the removable nut. Fig. 4 is a detail view showing the divided removable nut.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 and 2 designate the two parts of the boxing, which are hinged to each other at one end by a pintle 3, passing through apertured lugs formed thereon. These parts are enlarged their inner sides the parts 1 and 2 are provided with semicircular recesses 6, which form openings on a line with the threaded opening of the not when the latter is seated within the boxing, the said parts being held in a locked position by means of a weighted arm 7, which is pivoted upon abearing-pin 8 between apertured lugs 9 on the outer end of one part or section of the boxing and engages a recess 10 extending across the end of the other part or section, the arm having a ball 11, which engages the opposite section. The boxing is provided with trunnions 12 12, by which it is mounted within the supportingframe of the machine, and one of said parts or sections has a projecting arm 13, carrying a socket or bearing 14, in which is mounted a short shaft 15, carrying a pinion 16, the outer end of the said shaft being squared,as shown, to receive the crank-handle 17.
18 designates the threaded shaft, which carries the bit, and in connection with the particular construction hereinbefore described the said shaft is provided at each end with a reduced portion 19, which is triangular in cross-section 0r squared and has an aperture or opening 20 therethrough. The shaft is provided with the usual threads and has a longitudinal recess or groove 24: therein, with which engages a lug projecting into the axial opening of a large gear-wheel 22, which is loosely mounted on the shaft and meshes with the pinion 16, hereinbefore referred to.
One part orsection of the boxingis provided with an oil-hole 23, which communicates with a hole 26 extending through the nut, in order to provide for lubricating the parts at this point, the socket or bearing 14 also having an oil-hole.
The operation of the devices hereinbefore described will be readily understood, for when the parts are assembled the turning of the crank-handle will turn the threaded shaft through the intervention of gear- wheels 16 and 22, and as said shaft engages the threads of the nut located within the boxing it will feed forward at the same time, and when the shaft passes nearly through the boxing the parts of the latter may be separated'and the shaft removed and then reversed without requiring the shaft to be run back. In reversing this shaft the bit is removed from one end and placed upon the other, a cotter-pin or other equivalent device being employed to rigidly connect the said bit to the shaft and also provide for readily making the change. This particular construction and arrangement forms a means that will save the time and trouble of running the shaft back after using the drill. By forming the threaded portion of the socket independent of the boxing it provides for replacing the said threaded portion without having to replace the whole boxing, and it also permits of the boxing being made of cast metal, as it is not required to form any threads therein. boxing through which the shaft passes are of such size as not to interfere with the free passage of the shaft, and by locking the parts in the particular manner shown and described it provides for a rapid and convenient manipulation in reversing the threaded shaft.
It is apparent that the nut could be made in two parts and separated to run the threaded shaft back in starting the drill, as shown in Fig. 4.
Having thus described my invention, what The openings through the- I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a drilling-machine, the combination with a two-part boxing hinged to each other at one end and having communicating recesses at its other end, a gravity-arm pivoted to the upper devices for holding the bit in place, and mech-.
anism for turning the shaft, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HERMANN STAPELMANN.
