CANDY-WORKING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 752,226, dated February 16, 1904.
Application filed July 18, 1903.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM Tnno Hm)- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Candy-VVorking Machines, of
which the following is a specification.
My invention pertains to candy pulling or working machines; and it has for its object to provide a machine calculated to work a mass of candy in a rotary manner and at the same time expand and'contract the mass, this with a view of expediting the reduction of the candy to the state desired.
With the foregoing in mind the-invention will be fully understood from the following description and claims, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the machine constituting the preferred embodiment of my invention. Fig.2 is a detail transverse section taken in the plane indicated by the line 2 2 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 3 is-a sideelevation of U is a drive-shaft journaled in the base and bearing sprocket-wheels e, and D is a clutch member splined on and movable in the direction of the length of the shaft. The said clutch member is designed to be moved, through the medium of a lever f, into and out of engagement with a complementary member E on a continuously-rotating shaft g, this with a view of enabling an attendant to readily start and stop the machine.

In virtue of the construction described it will be observed that when the shaft C is rotated the bars Iwill also be rotated and the grabs'L revolved, with the result that candy placed on the grabs L will be pulled or worked in the manner common to candy-pulling machines extant. It will also be observed that incident to each rotation of each bar I the grabs L complementary thereto will be simultaneously moved outwardly and inwardly through the medium of the eccentrics (Z and the eccentric-straps J moving on said eccentrics, this to alternately stretch or expand and contract themass of candy and expedite the proper working'of the same; The alternate stretching and contraction of a mass of candy while the same is being worked by revolving grabs greatly expedite-s the reduction of the candy to the state desired, and is therefore a very material improvement in the art.
I have entered into a detailed description of the construction'and relative arrangement of the parts embraced in the present and preferred embodiment of my invention'in order.
to impart a full, clear, and exact understanding of the same. I do not desire, however, to be understood as confining myself to such specific construction and relative arrangement of parts, as such changes or modifications may be made in practice as fairly fall within the scope of my invention as claimed.
By attaching the eccentric-straps to the long ends of the lazy-tongs less power is required to operate the machine, so I would have it understood that in practice this change can be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
1. In a candy-working machine, grabs revoluble about a common center; one of the said grabs being also movable toward and from the said center during the revolution of the grabs.
2. In a candy-working machine, the combination of pairs of grabs; one grab of each pair being arranged between the grabs of the other pair, means for revolving the pairs of grabs, and means for moving the grabs of each pair away from and toward each other, alternately, incident to the revolution thereof.
3. In a candy-working machine, the combination of grabs revoluble about a common center; one of the said grabs being also movable toward and from the said center during the revolution of the grabs, means for revolving the grabs, and means for moving the one grab toward and from the said center during the revolution of the grabs.
4. In a candy-working machine, grabs revoluble about a common center, and movable toward and from said center incident to their revolution about the same.
5. In a candy-working machine, the combination of pairs of grabs; one grab of each pair being arranged between the grabs of the other pair, means for revolving the pairs of grabs, and means for moving one grab of each pair away from and toward the other grab of the pair incident to the revolution thereof.
6. In a candy-working machine, the combination of grabs revoluble about a common center, and movable toward and from said center during their revolution about the same, means for revolving the grabs, and means for moving the same toward and from the center.
7 In a machine for working candy, the combination of a frame, a shaft journaled therein, a grab connected with the shaft and adapted to revolve about the same, and means for moving said grab out and in incident to the revolution thereof.
8. In a machine for working candy, the combination of a frame, an eccentric and an eccentric-strap, one of which is fixed with respect to the frame, a shaft journaled in the frame, a grab connected with and adapted to revolve with the shaft, and means whereby the eccentric is enabled to move the grab out and in incident to the revolution thereof.
9. In a machine for working candy, the combination of a frame, an eccentric fixed with respect to the frame,,a shaft journaled in the frame, a grab connected and adapted to revolve with the shaft, and an eccentric-strap connected with the grab and receiving the cocentric.
10. In a machine for working candy, the combination of a frame, a shaft journaled in the frame, a bar on the shaft, grabs carried by and movable out and in with respect to the bar, lazy-tongs mounted on the shaft and connected with the grabs, and means for moving one grab out and in.
11. In a machine for working candy, the combination of a frame, an eccentric fixed with respect thereto, a shaft journaled in the frame, a bar on the shaft, grabs carried by and movable out and in with respect to the bar, lazy-tongs mounted on the shaft and connected with the grabs, and an eccentric-strap connected with one grab, and arranged on the eccentric.
12. In a machine for working candy, the combination of a frame, eccentrics fixed with respect thereto, shafts journaled in the frame, a drive-shaft, connections between the said shafts and the drive-shaft for driving the latter by the former, bars on the first-mentioned shafts, grabs on each bar, movable out and in; one grab on each bar being arranged between the grabs on the other bar, lazy-tongs mounted on the shafts and connected with the grabs, and eccentric-straps arranged on the eccentrics, and each connected with one grab of one bar.
13. In a machine for working candy, the combination of a frame, a shaft journaled therein, grabs connected with the shaft, and revoluble about and movable toward and from the same incident to the revolution, means for revolving the grabs, and means for moving the same toward and from the shaft.
14:. In a machine for working candy, the combination of a frame, shafts journaled in the frame, bars fixed on the shafts, pairs of grabs carried by the bars, and movable toward and from the shafts; one grab of each pair being arranged between the grabs of the other pair, and means for moving the grabs toward and from the shafts during the revolutions of the grabs.
I 15. In a candy-working machine, the combination of two grabs, one of which is revoluble about and movable toward and from a center, means for revolving the latter grab, and means for moving it toward and from the center incident to the revolution.
16. In a candy-working-machine, the combination of two grabs; one of the said grabs being revoluble about and movable toward and from a center.
