To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. FARNUM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Arlington, in the county of Bennington' and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type -Vifriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to what may be termed auxiliary platen-feed or rotating mechan-` ism for type-writing machines and which is employed in addition to the ordinary linespacing mechanism and by which the platen may be rotated in Ieither direction to any eX- tent independently of the ordinary line-spacing mechanism to bring any desired portion of the paper to the printing-line. The auX- iliary platen-.feed mechanism is particularly available for irregular line-spacing or for iilling in partly-printed blanks.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and eihcient device of the character described.
To the above and other ends, which will hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the novel arrangement and combinations of parts and the various details of construction hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims. Y

In the platen-frame 1 is mounted a rotating platen usual finger-wheel 3 at the left-hand end thereof. The right-hand end of theplaten-shaft 4: projects beyond the platen-frame and -is secured to the platen by a pin 5. The shaft 4. of

This line-spacing wheel 7 rotates freely upon the platen-shaft and is provided with a laterally-extending crown bevel-gear 8. This fingerwheel is providedl with oppositely-disposed bearings 11 for the reception of the pivots 12 of one member 13 of a gimbal or universal joint. Projecting'at right angles to the lpivots 12 on said member 13 are pivots 14, that are adapted to be seated within the slotted bearings 15 of the second member 16 of the gimbal-joint. vThis second member 16 is provided with' a collar 17, which surrounds the platenshaft 4c and is secured thereto by a set-screw 18. l The cup-shaped finger-wheel 10 has an opening 19 therein for the reception ofthe eccentric 20, which is connected to or forms part of the regulating finger-wheel 21. This finger-wheel 21 and eccentric is loosely mounted upon the reduced end 22 of the platen-shaft and is prevented from longitudinal displacement thereon by the shoulder 23, formed by the reduced portion, and by a nut 24:, which is secured to the free end of the platen-shaft. The finger-wheel 1() is apertured'upon opposite sides at 25 to facilitate the connection between the finger-wheel and the member 13 of the gimbal-joint. The loosely-mounted linespacing wheel 7 is, as before stated, prevented from longitudinal movement on the shaft 3() of the spacing-lever.
4 in one direction by the collar 6, whereas the collar 17 of the section 16 of the gimbal-joint constitutes an abutment against which a sleeve 26, that projects from the line-spacing wheel, is adapted to abut, so as to prevent movement thereof on the shaft in the opposite direction. The two crown-gears 8 and 9 are provided with different numbers of teeth. Thus we will assume that the crown-gear 8 has thirty-two teeth, in which event the crowngear 9 may be provided wth thirty-three teeth. The member 13 of the gimbal-joint is preferably resilient or flexible to a limited eX'- tent and may be sprung into its bearings 11, by which it is connected with the iinger-wheel, and when this member is in place in said bearings and the other member, 16, of the joint is forced against the resiliency of. the member 13 and is secured in place it tends to deflect the member 13 against its tension, as indicated by the dotted line showing in Fig. 9, and force the teeth of the crown-gear 9 into close contact or engagement with the teeth of the crown-gear 8, so that no lost motion or backlash may occur between the gears.
The line-spacing wheel 7 is provided on its periphery with ratchet-teeth 27, with which a line-spacing pawl 28 cooperates. The pawl 28 is pivotally connected at 29 `to an arm 30 of a two-arm spacing-lever which is pivoted t0 the platen-frame at 31. The other arm, 32, of this two-arm spacing-lever is provided with a finger-piece 33, by means of which it may be vibrated, the parts being restored to normal position by a coiled spring 34, which bears at one end against a pin 35, projecting from the platen-frame, and at its opposite end against a pin 36, that' projects from the arm The line spacing pawl 28 is provided with a depending arm 37, which is adapted to abut against any one of the three faces 38 of a regulating-piece 39, which is pivoted at'40 to the platen-frame and may be provided with suitable means to secure it in any one of the three adjusted posi- A`tions where the depending arm37 contacts with one of the faces 38 of this regulating piece or abutment 39 when the parts are in the normal position. In this manner a change in the extent of throw in the line-spacing lever and pawl is effected in'order to turn the line-spacing wheel one, two, or three teeth at each operation, as determined by the positioning of. the piece 39. In the feed movement of the pawl 28 the depending arm 36 abuts against and is limited by a pin 41, carried by the arm 30. This arm likewise carries a rigid locking-pawl 42, the engaging nose of which will be brought into engagement with the teeth 27 of the line-spacing wheel when the line-spacing pawl reaches-the limit of its feed movement, thus locking the line-spacing wheel against further rotation in either direction. Cooperating wheel 7 is a roller 43, which is carried by a spring 44, which is secured'at 45 to the platenframe and which presses the roller against the teeth. This spring pressed roller 40 tends to maintain the line spacing wheel against accidental displacement.
In the operation of the device for ordinary line-spacing a rotation will be transmitted to the line-spacing wheel 7 by the two-arm spacing-lever and a corresponding rotation will be transmitted to the platen 2 byreason of the fact that the gears 8 and 9 are in mesh and adapted to rotate therewith. Should the operator desire to provide a differential spacing-that is to say, to provide a rotating movement of the platen, which diifers from that which may be attained with the aid of the line-spacing wheel 7-it is merely neces- 4 sary to rotate the regulating nger-wheel 21. The effect of this rotation of the regulating finger-wheel is to revolve the eccentric 20, and thereby transmit a movement of nutation to the gear-wheel 9 and its finger-wheel 10, this movement being permitted by the universal-joint connection between the combined crown-gear and linger-wheel and the platenshaft 4. The movement of nutation of the gear 9 will cause a rolling action, so to speak, thereof on the gear 8-that is to say, as the high portion of the inclined eccentric 20 turns the side of the gear 9 next thereto is forced by a swaying action into mesh with the teeth of the gear 8-so that in a complete rotation of the gear 9 every tooth thereof will be successively brought into mesh with the teeth of the gear-wheel 8, and a differential movement between the gear-wheels 8 and 9 is established by the actuation of the {ingerwheel 21. The gear-wheel 9 being positively connected to rotate with the platen through its shaft 4 and the gear-wheel 8 being connected to and adapted to revolve with the line-spacing wheel 7 independently of the platen and its shaft, it follows that the turning of the finger-wheel 21 will move the platen 2 and the line-spacing wheel 7 one with relation to the other. In other words, a rotation of the finger-wheel 21 will rotate the platen with relation to the line-spacing wheel when the latter is held against movement. This holding of the line-space wheel is eected by the detent-roller 43, which bears upon the ratchet-teeth under the tension of the spring 44 with sufficient force to hold the wheel against rotation during the movement of the platen in either direction by the finger-wheel 2l. The cup-shaped nger-wheel 10, which constitutes a-part of or has formed thereon the IOO crown-gear 9, is at all timeseffective to move the line-spacing wheeland the platen together, and at this time the platen and line-spacing wheel will bear a fixed relation one with the other, because the gears 8 and 9 do not move at this time relatively one to the other. While I have shown and described with considerable 'detail one form in which my invention may be clothed, it should be understood that various changes in the construction and operation may be made without departing Yfrom the spirit of my invention.
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In atype-writing machine, the combination of a platen, a line-spacing ratchet-wheel therefor, a toothed gear connected to said ratchet-wheel, a regulating toothed gear which meshes with the gear on the ratchet-wheel and which is operatively connected to the platenshaft, whereby the said gears, ratchet-wheel and platen are adapted to be rotated together, a universal joint which constitutes the operative connection between the regulating-gear and the platen-shaft, and means for transmitting a movement of nutation to said regulating-gear to effect adisplacement ofthe ratchetwheel and platen one with relation to the other.

In atype-writing machine', the combination of a platen, a platen-shaft secured thereto, a line-spacing ratchet-wheel loosely mounted upon said shaft, a toothed gear upon said ratchet-wheel, a fingerwheel for rotating the platen, a toothed regulating-gear on said linger-wheel and which meshes with the-toothed gear on the ratchet-wheel to cause said platen, ratchet and hand wheel to rotate together, a universal joint between said nger-wheel and the platen-shaft, and means for moving said finger-wheel on the universal joint to displace the platen and ratchet-wheel one with relation to the other.

In atype-writing machine, the combination of a platen, line-spacing mechanism, a finger-wheel connected to move said platen and to have a separate displacing movement with relation thereto, and means for effecting the said displacing movement of the finger-wheel, whereby the platen and line-spacing mechanism will be displaced one with relation to the other.

In a type-writing machine, the combination of a platen, a line-spacing ratchet-wheel, a iinger -wheel positively connected to the platen so as to turn the same, differential gear a finger-wheel operatively connected to the platen and adapted to rotate with the platen and ratchet-wheel and to have a differential movement with relation to the ratchet-wheel,
dierential gear connections between said nger and ratchet wheels, and means independent of the finger-wheel for actuating it to effect the differential movement of the parts, to displace the platen with relation to the ratchet-wheel.

In a type-writing machine, the combinaof a platen, a line-spacing ratchet-wheel, a finger-wheel which isv positively connected to rotate the platen, a differential positive connection between the ratchet-wheel and lingerwheel, and means for moving the finger-wheel relatively to the platen to effect a differential movement of the parts, to displace the platen and ratchet-wheel one with relation to the other.
21. In atype-writing machine, the combination of a platen, a line-spacing ratchet-wheel,
` a gear thereon, a nger-wheel which is positively connected to rotate with the platen, a gear on said finger-wheel and which meshes with the gear on the ratchet-wheel, so as to form a differential connection between the ratchet-wheel and nger-wheel, and means for moving thefinger-wheel relatively to the platen, to effect a diierential movement of the parts to displace the platen and ratchetwheel one with relation to the other.
22. In a type-writing machine, the combination of a platen, a line-spacing ratchet-Wheel, a finger-wheel which is connected to the platen by a gimbal-joint, a dierential connection between the ratchet-wheel and finger-wheel and an eccentric for moving the finger-wheel relatively to the platen, to effect a differential movement of the parts, to displace the platen andratchet-wheel one with relation to the other.
23. In a type-writing machine, the combination of a platen, a line-spacing ratchet-wheel and its actuating means, a gear thereon, a finger-wheel which is connected to the platen by a gimbal-joint, a gear on said nger-wheel which meshes with the gear on the ratchetwheel, so as to form a differential connection between the ratchet-wheel and nger-wheel, and an eccentric which is movable independently of the platen for moving the fingerwheel relatively to the platen, to eiect a differential movement of the parts, to displace the platen and ratchet-wheel one with relation to the other.
24. In a type-writing machine, the combination of a platen, a line-spacing ratchet-wheel IOO IIO
movable with relation to said platen, a ringer- Wheel which is operatively connected by anniversal joint to rotate With the platen, and means which cooperate with the iinger-Wheel to effeet a displacement of the platen and ratchet- Wheel, one With relation to the other when the linger-wheel is moved on its universal joint.

In a type-Writing machine, the combination of a platen, a ratchet-Wheel, a gear-Wheel connected thereto, a regulating-gear Which is operatively connected to the platen and is mounted in a plane that intersects the plane of the gear on the ratchet-wheel, and means for turning the regulating-gear to produce a differential movement of the platen and ratchet-Wheel, one with relation to the other.

Inatype-Writing machine, the combination of a platen, a line-spacing ratchet-Wheel having a gear-Wheel connected thereto, and a cup-shaped finger-Wheel having a crown-gear on the edge thereof that is adapted to coperate With the gear on the ratchet-Wheel and to eect a dierential movement of the platen and ratchet-Wheel one with relation to the other.
27. In atype-Writing machine, the combination of a platen, a line-spacing Wheel therefor,
a gear-Wheel which is operatively connected to the line-spacing Wheel, a regulating-Wheel Which has a movement of nutation as Well as rotation, a hand-operated eccentric for transmitting movement to said regulating-Wheel and spring-pressed means for maintaining said Wheels in close engagement.
