APPARATUS FOR EXERCISE.

Specilication forming part of Letters Patent No. 75.218, dated March 3, 1868.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, GEORGE H. TAYLOR, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Oscillatory Vibrating Machine for Medical Purposes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear, full, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a front view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a top view, and Fig. 3 is an end view.

This invention relates to the application of oscillatory or vibratin g motion to various parts of the human body under the direction of a competent physician, to aid in the recovery of health by inducing the following effects: to increase the production of heat in such parts as are subjected to the action; to cause blood to ilow in larger amount into such parts; to attract blood from other portions where it may be retained in too large measure; to excite capillary activity; to counteract the tendency to local congestions; to restore nervous action and power 5 to perfect and equalize the nutritive operations of the body, and to render healthlul the tissues of the body. My invention consists of, iirst, a handle of convenient shape and size to be grasped by the hand, to which an oscillating or vibrating motion is communicated by any suitable mech anism; second, a shoe or foot holder, of convenient size and shape, and adjusted in a suitable vposition to receive and retain the foot of the person to be operated upon, the said foot-holder having oscillating or vibrating motion comlnunicated to it by proper mechanism 5 third, the combination, with the said handle, of a shaft, on which it is supported, and a crank or cranks connected with said shaft, whereby a circular oscillating or vibrating motion is imparted to the said handle; fourth, the combination, with the said shoe or foot holder, of a shaft, on which it is supported,

and a crank or cranks whereby a circular vif brating motion is communicated to thesaid foot-holder 5 fifth, the combination and arrangement of the several parts or devices forming the machine, hereinafter fully described, for producing the effects stated.

In the drawings, B represents the handle, hung on the shaft A, so as to vibrate or rock with it; and C represents a crank hung to the same shaft.

E is a shorter crank on the driving-shaft F, which is connected to the crank G by the rod D. Vhen the shaft F revolves the crank E revolves with it, giving a reciprocating or rocking motion to the shaft A and the handle B.

The foot-holder B' is hung on the shaft A', which is in like manner driven by the cranks E' and C' and the rod D', which obtain their motion from the shaft F.

M is the frame of the machine, in which the working parts are hung, or to which they are attached.

G is the driving-pulley and ily-wheel, and I is a treadle.

J is a pulley by means of which the machine may be driven by power, and K is a.

crank by which it may be driven by hand.

The extent of the vibrating motion given to the hand or foot may be increased or diminished by shortening or lengthening the cranks by which the handle or footholder is driven, and by running the machine faster or slower the rapidity ol' the vibrations may be increased or diminished to suit different cases.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The handle B, driven by any y suitable mechanism by which avibratory or oscillating motion is imparted to it, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The shoe or foot holder B', driven by any suitable mechanism by which a vibratory or oscillating motion is imparted to it, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. The combination, with the handle B, of the shaft A, crank C,crank E, and rod D, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

4. The combination,vvith the foot-holder B', of the shaft A', cranks E' and C', and the rod D', substantially as and for the purpose specitied.

5. The combination, with the handle B and foot-holder B' and their immediate connec tions, of the driving-shaft F, pulleys G and H,
