Description

No. 752,186. 1 PATENTED FEB. 16, 1904.
' v 1;. L. SIBLEY.
APPARATUS P011 INSERTING' PAPER FASTENERS.
APPLICATION FILED AUG. 12, 1903.
UNITED STATES Patented February 16, 1904.
PATENT OFFICE.
APPARATUS FOR INSERTING PAPER-FASTENERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 752,186, dated February 16, 1904;.
Application filed August 12, 1903.
T a] whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD L. SIBLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bennington, in the county ofBennington and State of Vermont, have invented a certain new and rest of some sort into which the punching-tool may enter as it passes through the pile; but of course such rest must have suflicient solid surface to afford a support for the pile, and hence the hollow portion of the rest when such portion is covered by the pile ofarticles.
The present invention comprises a hollow rest or punch-block having a swinging guide or gage by means of which the punch may be centered over a pile of papers or other articles relatively to the hollow portion of the rest or punch-block to permit the passage of the punch through the pile and into the hollow portion without damaging the restor punch-block.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the invention, in the two figures of which like parts are similarly designated, Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of rest or punchblock, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a modification of the arrangement of the guide or gage. v
The rest or punch-block 1 may be of wood, with a hole 2 therein rather larger than the punch-blade and of a depth greater than the punch-blade. The guide or gage for the punch is shown as composed of a wire having a shank 3 inserted in a hole or hearing in the block and provided with an offset, such as a coil 4, which cooperates with a'pin 5 in the block in Serial No. 169,286. (No model.)
order to limit the swinging motion of the guide or gage, and said wire terminates in a guideeye 6 at its free end, which is capable of being brought into vertical alinement with the hole in the rest or punch-block, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, so-that should a pile of papers or other articles to be fastened together be placed over the block, thus concealing the hole therein, the operator may -aline the punch with the guide-eye and insert it part way in the pile and then turn aside the guide or gage to permit the full descent of the punch through the pile for the making of the hole or for the combined operation of making the hole and inserting the fastener.
The construction and arrangement of the guide or gage may be modified in various ways Within the spirit and scope of this inventionas, for example, a notch 7, Fig. 2, may be formed in one edge of the block and the guide or gage inserted therein, the vertical walls of the said notch serving as a stop to limit the swinging movement of the guide or gage.
As already indicated, the apparatus is capable of use not only for the combined operation of punching the holes and inserting the fasteners, but also for punching the holes to receive fasteners to be inserted by hand or otherwise subsequently to the formation of the holes.
What I claim is In an apparatus for inserting paper-fasteners, a hollow rest or punch-block, a swinging guide or gage applied thereto, and a stop for alining said guide or gage over the hollow or hole in the rest or block for positioning a punch over the hollow or hole in the block, said guide or gage being adapted to be swung away from the punch after the punch is so positioned, to permit the forcing of the punch through the article to be punched.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 5th day of August, A. D. 1903.
EDWARD I3. SIBLEY.
