My invention, relates to paper guides for typewriting machines, and has for its object to provide simple means for efliciently guiding the paper and holding it in contact with the platen and also for enabling the paper to be fully released when desired.
To this end my invention consists in certain novel constructions and arrangements of parts, as will be fully described hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan of the type-writer platen provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is an end elevation. Fig. 4 is an inverted plan. Fig. 5 is a sectional elevation on line 5 5 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is adetail showing the device for throwing the front rail of the platen and the devices carried thereby away from the platen, and Fig. 7 is a detail showing one of the feedrollers arranged at the'rear of the platen an to slide a sleeve G, havinga finger G arranged to engage the paper at the central portion of the platen. On the front bar B are further mounted adjustable sleeves D, having setscrewsE and carrying brackets D, which support curved paper-guides F. Each of these guides has a roller F journaled thereto, and

At the rear of the platen carriers G are loosely mounted,-each carrier having at its upper end a loose engagement with'a pin H, while near its lower end the carrier has a similar engagement with a screw J, surrounded by a coiled spring K, which has a tendency to throw the lower end of the carrier toward the platen.
Below the platen is located a longitudinally-movable bar p L, having cut-out portions or cam portions L, which are adapted to engage projections G on the carriers Gr. If, however, the bar is shifted'to the left, the
cam portions or actuating portions L will engage the PI'OJGCtIOIlS G P and swing the rollers O O away from the platen, thus releasing the paper. It is desirable that at the same time the guides F and rollers F should be swung away from the platen. This is effected by the following mechanism: At one end the bar -L is provided with a cut-out portion L, having an inclined wall. This inclined wall is adapted to engage a finger R projected from a lever R,-which is pivoted at R and guided by the engagement of a screw S with the walls of the slot R When thebar L is. moved from the position shown in Fig. 4, the lower end of the lever B is swung to theleft, (referring to Fig. 3,) and its upper end is therefore moved to the right. This upper end is pivotally. connected at T with j a'li'nk T, provided with a'slot T engaging a stationary guide U. This link also engages a toeV at the lower end of an arm V, which projects from a lever V, fulcrumed at Y upon another lever Y, whichfin turn is fulcrumed at Y upon the platen-frame. This lever Y also formsia carrier for the movable front bar B and is normally held in the position illustrated by Figs-3 and 6 by a spring W, which engages a s tionary abutment'X on the frame.
A knob V is provided on the leverV to facilitate operating same. The toe V normally projects into a notch B of the platen-frame. When the knob V is pressed downward, the
' lever V will first rock alone on its pivot Y,
so as to'disengage the toe V from the notch B Then as soon as the rear end of the lever V below the knob V engages the lever Y the two levers will move together, swinging, about the pivot Y and causing the .front'bar B and the paper-guides ()"F F, carried thereby, to move away from the platen. The other rollers O 0 will, however, remain in engagement with the platen or the paper. The arrangement described therefore pro' vides means for swinging the paper-guides F F away from the platen without affecting the adjustment of the other parts. When the operator by moving the handle N shifts the 'bar L and throws the rollers O 0 off the platen, as described, he also through the me-v dium of the lever R and link T moves the le- 'ver V, as will be understood by reference to Fig. 3, and causes the front bar B, with the parts carried thereby, to be swung in the same manner as they would be by the manual depression of the knob V".

The combination, with the platen and its frame, of a plurality of carriers loosely mounted on said frame so as to be independently movable toward and from the platen; a plurality of ali'ning rollers journaled on said carriers and extending parallel with the platen, said carriers being capable of independently swinging in such amanner as to bring oneend or the other of each roller nearer. to the platenor the other of each roller nearerto the platen surface, and means for throwing all of said surface and means for throwing said carriers 7. The combination, with the platen and its frame, 'of pressure-exerting devices movable toward and from the platen, a sliding bar for throwing said pressure-exerting devices off the platen, said bar being. provided with an inclined surface, a transversely'kmovable lever arranged to be operated by engagement with said inclined surface of the sliding bar, and a paperguide movable toward and from the platen and arranged to be swung away from the platen by the movement of said lever.

The eombination, with the platen and its frame, of a rigid carrier, a roller having both of its ends journaled on said carrier, the carrim and roller being capable of moving toward and from the platen and being further eapable of an oscillating motion so as to bring one end or the other nearer to the platen-surface, the
