According to this invention a differential or balance-geared axle is employed on which is loosely mounted a spur-wheel B capable of being made fast to the said axle by a clutch U, either of the-sliding type, as shown, or of any other suitable type. Any suitable form or E type of differential or balance-geared axle, of
which there are many well known, may be employed. The motor of whatever type is employed drives the sleeve-axle K through the-axle K, which is mounted in suitable hearings in or on the case H, or alternatively the pinions L and Q may be mounted direct onto the axle K. The motor may either he connected direct to the axle K, as shown in Fig. l, or it may he connected indirectly thereto, according to the disposition of the parts on the vehicle.
it will be seen that as all the exlcs K, li K K2 and K are geared together by he train of wheels (1, R, r, S, s, T, f, and U the pinions L, N, and P will revolve in one dircction and the pinions M and O in the reverse direction. If, therefore. the carriage D is set to engage the pinion F with either of the pineither of the pinions M or O, the axle A will be driven at one of two dilierent speeds in the same direction it'was driven When the pin ion F was engaged with either of the pinions L, M, and 1, whereas it will be driven at one of three ditl'erent speeds in the reverse direction it the pinion G is brought into engagement'with either of the pinions L, N, and P.
To enable the carriage D to be moved to bring one or other of the pinions F and G into engagement with the pinions L, M, N, O, and P, the carriage is connected either directly or indirectly with a lever V, working in a quadrant W or its equivalent, whereby it can be rocked about the axle A and locked inthe posltion to give thedesired speed and direction. 'Ehe lever V is provided with a trigger-rod V, carrying a tooth 2, adapted to engage detents w in the quadrant W or its equivalent, so as to retain the carriage in the desired position to engage the pinions F or G, asthe case may be, with one or other of the pinions L, M, N, O, and P, according to the speed at which and the direction in which the axle A is to be driven. The quadrant or sector W is provided with an index, as shown in Fig. 4, to indicate the positions of the lever V for the different speeds ahead and astern.
' The sl ding clutch C is operated by a bellcrank lever X, pivoted tothe rocking'carriage D, the said bell-crank lever being coupled to the triggerfrod o the arrangement being such that the trigger is always in engagement with the quadrant or' sector until the clutch is put out of gear with the wheel on the driven axle, or,
- in other words, that the position of the rocking carriage cannot .be altered so long as the spur-wheel on driven axle is fixed thereto by said clutch. v
The carriage D may be operated by an index-wheelinstcad of by a lever, the said wheel operating through a shaft and gearing and being fitted with the locking-trigger and mechanism for operating the clutch, as before described.
WV hat we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a motor-driven vehicle, a multiple speed-gear comprising an axle to be driven, a spur-wheel loosely mounted on said axle, a clutch for coupling said wheel to said axle, a
carriage pivoted on said axle, a pinion mounted on said carriage and gearing with spurwheel on said axle, two pinions of equal size mounted on said carriage so that they gear with one another one of said pinions being connected to the pinion. gearing with spurwheel on'driven axle, a group of axles arranged radially with respect to driven axle and at equal distances therefrom, spur-pinions on said axles wit-h which the two pinions in gear witli one another and mounted on said carriage can be engaged by rocking said carriage on said axle, a train of gearing connecting the group of radially-arranged axles with one another so that the speed of each succeed ing one after the first-which is the drivingaxle-is reduced a predetermined degree, and means for rocking t e said carriage on driven axle and locking same in respect thereto, as set forth. r
2. In a motor-driven vehicle a multiple speed-gear comprising an axle to be driven, a spur-Wheel loosely mounted on said axle, a clutch for coupling said wheel to said axle, a carriage pivoted on said axle, a pinion mounted on said carriage and gearing with spurwheel on said axle, two pinions of equal size mounted on said carriage so that they gear with one another one of said pinions being connected to the pinion gearing with spurwheel on driven axle, a group of axles arranged radially with respect to driven axle and at equal distances therefrom, spur-pinions on said axles with which the two pinions in gear with one another and mounted on said carriage can be engaged by rocking said carriage on said axle, a train 'of gearing connecting the group of radially-arranged axles with one another so that the speed of each succeeding one after the firstwhich is the driving-axleis reduced a predetermined degree, of a case inclosing said gear, a'lever for operating rocking carriage, a quadrant over which said lever travels and means for rocking said carrage on the driven axle and for locking the same thereto, as set forth.
3. In a motor-driven vehicle av multiple speed-gear comprising an axle to be driven, a spur-wheel loosely mounted on said axle, a clutch for coupling said wheel to said axle, a carriage pivoted on said axle, a pinion mounted onsaid carriage and gearing with spurwhel on said axle, two pinions of equal size mounted on said carriage so that they gear with one another one of said pinions being connected to the pinion gearing with spur-wheel on driven axle, a group of axles arranged radially with respect to driven axle and at equal distances therefrom, spur-pinions on said axles with which the two pinions in gear with one another and mounted on said carriage can be engaged by rocking said carriage onsaid axle, a train of gearing connecting the group of radially-arranged axles with one another so that the speed of each succeeding one after the first-which is the driving-axleis reduced a predetermined degree, a case inclosing said gear, a lever for operating rocking carriage, a quadrant over which said lever travels, a trigger-rod for locking said lever to said quadrant, and a connection for operating the clutch locking the spur-wheel on driven axle to said axle, as set forth.
