CARRlAGE-SHIFTING MECHANISM.
SPECIFICATION forming partof Letters Patent No. 752,093, dated February 16, 1904:.
Application filed June 6, 1903. serial No. 160,371. (No model.)
To all whom/it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LOUIS Mrnns, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hartford, county of Hartford, State of Connecti- 5 cut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carriage-Shifting Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to type-writers. and other machines in which a carriage is employed which is capable of being shifted to different positions, as for the purpose of printing upper or lower case characters.
The object of my invention is to provide a carriage which will be. readily shifted and the shifting mechanism of which will be extremely simple. I
'A typical form of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a sectional elevation of a portion r0 ofv a type-writer, taken from front to rear. Fig. 2 is a section taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a detail cross-section drawn upon an enlarged scale.
A indicates the frame of the machine, which 5 is provided with a track A for balls B, located at the rear of the carriage C, said carriage having a track C for said balls. The carriage is provided with the usual platen D and also has wheels or rollers E, adapted torun upon a rail F, capable of vertical movement. 'Any suitable mechanism may be employed for shifting the rail 3as, for instance, a frame I 'G, fulcrumed' at G and operated by means of a shift-key. (Not shown.) The rear edges of 5 the carriage are spaced from the adjacent portion of the frame A sufliciently to enable the balls B to act as a fulcrum for the carriageC when the rail F is raised or lowered. I am thus enabled to employ a carriage of a very t simple construction. The frame Ais further provided at about the center of the carriage with atrack A, on which are adapted to run balls H, which also engage a track C on the carriage. The upright surface in front of the 1,5 track A is made to flare forwardly, as indicated at A so that the space inclosed between the carriage-track C and the'adjacent portion of the frame A will be wider at the top than at the bottom. Thus when the carriage is swung upward about the balls B as a pivot or fulcrum the lower forward corner of the carriage portion, which is adjacent to the I track 0 will be enabled to lift the balls H and to cause them to travel on the inclined surface A it being understood that this'surface is so shaped that the balls B will always be kept in proper relation to the carriage, following the same in its upward and downward movement. p
v I have described and shown what I consider to be the simplest and best means for the indicated purpose; but other suitable means might be employed for causing the balls H to follow the carriage in its upward movement.
It will be seen that the mechanism above described is exceedingly simple and allows the carriage to be shifted from one position to the other and to be efficiently supported and guided in either position.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patentbeing movable to cause the carriage to swing about the balls as a fulcrum;
2. In a typewriter or other machine, a frame, a carriage, a ball-bearing interposed between the frame and the carriage, a supportfor the front portion of the carriage, said support beingmovable to cause the carriage to swing about the balls as a'fulcrum, and another ballbearing interposed between the frame and the carriage and located between the first-named ball-bearing and the said front support.
3. In a type-writer or other machine,a frame, a carriage, aball-bearing interposed'between the frame andthe carriage, a support for the front portion of the carriage, said support being movable to cause the carriageto swing about the balls as a fulcrum, another ballbearing interposed between the frame and the carriage'and located between the first-named balhbearing and the saidfront support, and a support or lifter for the balls of the last-named bearing, arranged to follow the shifting movement of the carriage.
4. In a type-writer or othermachine, aframe, a carriage, a ball-bearing interposed between the frame and the rear portion of the carriage, another ball-bearing located in front of said first-named ball bearing, the guideway or space in which the front balls travel being wider at the top than at the bottom, and means I for swinging the carriage about the rear ballbearing as a fulcrum and simultaneously lifting the front balls into the wider portion of to this specification in the presence of two sub- I 5 scribing witnesses.
