I UNITED- STATES PATENT v OFFICE.
SETH ORONE, OF New YORK, N. Y.
BRAKE-BEAM.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent N6. 752,045, dated February 16, 1904. Application filed September 23, 1903.. are Ito-174,257. (No man To ad whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SETH A. CRoNn, a citi- Zen of the United States, and a residento'f New- York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brake-Beams, of which .the following is a specification.
The invention relates tolimprovements in brake-beams forrailway-cars; and it consists in the novel features of construction and com binations of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Brake-beams of the class to which my invention pertains comprise a rolled body beam or member of suitable length, brake-heads of standard construction on the ends thereof, a fulcrum for the brake-lever, Wheel-guards secured to said body-beam adjacent to said brakeheads, and means for attaching the pendent safety-chains; and my invention has for its object to produce novel wheel-guards to be applied to the body-beam and novel means-for attaching the lower ends of the safety-chains to said beam. I
The purposes of my invention are to produce a more durable and less expensive structure than those heretofore known, and preferably to form the Wheel-guards and clips for the safety chains in one integral piece of forged metal.
The invention will be fullyiunderstood fromthe detailed description hereinafter presented,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in Which V Figure 1 is a top elevation of abrake-beam employing wheel-guards and chain-clips constructed in accordance with and embodying the invention, the fulcrum and brake-heads which will be imparted to it preparatory to being omitted; Fig. 2 is an enlarged end view of same, the rolled body-beam being indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 3 is an enlarged top view of one of the wheel-guards and chainclips embodying my invention. Fig. 4 is an enlarged perspective view of same, a portion of, the chain-clip being shown in the position the application of the safety-chain thereto; and Fig. 5 is an outer end View of one of the wheel-guards. v In-the drawings; 10 designates a usual bodybeamof rolled metal, 11 the wheel-guards of my invention, and 12 the chain-clips, the latter and the wheelguards being preferably in one integral piece of forged metal and said beam 10 having usualfflanges 13. The wheelguards 11 and clips 12 are preferably integral with each other and formed 'of one piece of metal pressed to shape andconstituting in the complete article the concavo-convex arm 14 and the flanges 15, 16, 17, and 18, the flange 17 hearing against the web of the beam and secured thereto by the rivet or bolt 19, extending through an aperture 20 in said flange 17 and through an aperture formed in said web, as represented in Figs. 1 and- 2. The. flanges 16 15 engage theopposite sides of the flange 13 of the beam 10, a recess 21 being.
formed between said flanges 16 15 to receive at the upper side of the-beam 10 the said flange 13. The flanges- 16 and. 15 cooperate with the flange 13 of the body-beam in afi'ording adequate support for the projecting arm 14, which extends outwardlyfrom the flange 15 substantially in line with the web of said body-beam. The arms 14; are made of concavo-convex form in cross section, and the convex face of said arm 14 faces upwardly, whereby the said arm 14 is rendered stifl' and durable without the employment of an excessive weight of metaL'and the upper surface of said arm l iwill shed any water or dust which may settle thereupon. 7 I The flange 17 constitutes the. means, in connection' with the. rivet 19, for securing the arm 14 to the beam 10 and also the means for securing the flange 18 to said beam, said flange 18 being projected upwardly from the web of the beam 10 and constituting the clip for re ceiving the lower end of. the safety-chain. The flange 18 will be provided with an aperture 21, extending transversely through it and substantially in line with the width of the beam 10 to facilitate the application of the lower end of the chain (not shown) to said flange 18.
I shall preferably split the flange 18 at one side of its aperture 21, as more clearly illustrated in Fig. 4, thereby providing a'section 22 of said flange which may be bent outwardly from itsnormal position (shown by' dotted lines in Fig. i)'to the position in which it is illustrated by full lines in Fig 4 for the purpose of opening the aperture 21 and per-- mitting the lower link of the usual safetychain to be slipped upon the said section 22 and passed to the said aperture 21, after which the said. section 22 will be bent back to its normal position for the purpose of closing the said aperture 21 and locking the chain in position. It will not always be necessary to split the flange 18 or form the section 22; but considerable labor will be saved when the said flange is thus split, because of. the convenience afl'orded thereby for securing the safety-chain to the beam.
' I do not limit my invention in every instance to the manufacture of the flange 18 in one integral piece with the wheel-guard arm 14, because for some classes of brake-beams the wheel-guard arms 1% are not employed. Neither do I limit the invention in every instance to the manufacture of the wheel-guard arm 14 in one integral piece with the flange 18, because the wheel-guard arm 1 1 is novel in itself when the flange 18 is omitted. It is possible also to employ the wheel-guard arm 14: and a chain-clip of. a construction other than that shown in the drawings, and although I prefer to make the chain-clip and the wheel-guard arm in one integral piece of metal it is evident that the chain-clip may be constructed of an independent piece of metal and bolted to the beam 10. In instancesin whichIshall not employ the chain-clip in one piece with the wheel-guard arm 14 the wheel-guard will then .comprise the flanges 17 16 15 and arm 1 1,
and in instances in which the wheel-guard is entirely omitted, but the chain-clip employed,
the chain-clip will comprise the flanges 17 and 18. I prefer to employ the flange 15, so to throw the wheel-guard arm l iabout in line with the web of the beam 10; but in some instances the arm 14: may extend directly outward from the edge of the flange 13 of the beam 10, the flange 15 then not being employed.
It will be observed that the aperture 21 in the flange 18 is located at one side of the center of said flange, this being the preferred arrangement of said aperture.
The piece of metal from which the combined wheel-guard and chain-clip hereinbefore described is formed is, as will be observed, a flat bar of forged metal of substantially uniform width and thickness and greater in width than in thickness and pressed toshape.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a ln'ake-beam, the body-beam and the Wheel-guard secured thereto, said wheel-guard comprising in. one integral piece of forged metal, the flanges 17, 1(1 and projecting arm 14, the latter being of -oncavo-con\"cx form; substantially as set forth.
its flat faces in line with the length of the wheel guard and containing the aperture 21 extending transversely through it; substantially as shown and described. 3. In a brake-beam, the body-beam and the wheel-guardsecured thereto, said wheel-guard comprising in one integral piece of metal the flanges 17, 16 and 15 and pro ecting arm 1 the latter being of concave-convex form; substantially as set forth.
4:. In a brake-beam, a body-beam and the combined wheel-guard and chain-clip secured thereto and being in one integral piece of metal, said wheel-guard and chain-clip comprising the flanges 18, 17. and 16 and projecting arm 1 1, the whole being of forged metal and said arm'14 belng concavo-convex' in crosssection; substantially as set forth.
5. In a brake-beam, a body-beam and the combined wheel-guard and chain-clip secured thereto and being in one integral piece of metal, said wheel-guard and chain-clip comprising the flanges 18, 17 and 16 and projecting arm 14:, the said flange 18 having the aperture 21 and being split outwardly therefrom so as to form the section 22, and the whole being of forged metal; substantially as set forth.
6. In abrake-bea'm, the body-beam and the I combined wheel-guard and chain-clip secured thereto and belng in one piece of forged metal, said chain-clip comprising an apertured flange IOO 18 split outwardly from the aperture therein;
substantially as set forth.
7. In a brake-beam, the body-beam and the chain-clip secured thereto, said chain-clip comprising the flange 17 and apertured flange 18, the latter being split outwardly from the aperture therein; substantially as set forth.
8. In a brake-beam, the body-beam and the chain-clip secured thereto, said chain-clip comprising the flange 18 having the aperture therein and being split outwardly from said aperture; substantially as set forth.
