SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 751,498, dated February 9, 1904. Application filed October 16,1903. Serial No. 177,319. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, ALLEN D. GrosE'rT, acitizen of the United States, residing at Krum, in the county of Denton, State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horseshoes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

Thisinvention relates to horseshoes; and it has for its object to provide a shoe which may be nailed to the horses hoof in the usual manner and which, while being made of metal,

will permit of natural growth of the hoof, so

. shape and size as if no shoe were worn.

Afurther object of the invention is to provide a construction of shoe which while embodying the benefits mentioned will not materially add to the expense of the shoe.

In the drawings forming'a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a top perspectiveview of a portion of a horses hoof having attached thereto a shoe embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a top perspective view of the studded member of the shoe. Fig. 3 is a perspective View showing the bottom of the shoe member having the slot.

Referring now to the drawings, the present shoe comprises two members 5 and 6, forming the sides of the shoe and each embodying one-half of the toe of the shoe. Each member 5 and 6 of the shoe embodies a heel-call: 7 and has in its under side agroove 8, through the top of which are formed the usual perforations 9 to receive attaching-nails. 1

The member 5 of the shoe is halved at its toe end by havin its upper portion cut away, so that a reduce extension. 10 results, and from the upper face of this reduced extension there projects a stud 11 at a pointnear to the free end of said extension. The sides of the stud toward the toe and the heel of the shoe are flattened, while the other sides are rounded, so that the end of the stud is substantially elliptical insha'pe, for a ently explained.

purpose to be pres- The member 6 of the shoe is likewise halved at its toe end, the halvingbeing made by cutting away the lower face of themember to form the vertically-reduced extension 12, the dimensions of which are substantially the same as those of the extension 10. These extensions are adapted to. lie one upon the other, so that all adjacent faces or adjacent outer. faces willbe flush, the extension 12 having a longitudinal slot 14 formed therein, in which is slidably received the stud 11.

The length of the slot is suflicient to permit of an amount of sliding movement of the stud that will enable movement of the members 5 and 6 toward and away from each other to compensate for any possible lateral growth of the hoof of the horse during the life of the shoe. The width of the slot is somewhat greater than the length of the minor axis of the elliptical stud, but is less than the length of the major axis of the stud, so that the stud v may have a limited pivotal movement in the slot.

With the present construction of shoe it will be seen that expansion of the hoof will not be retarded at any point,- the toe being permitted lateral growth as well as the heel, the consequence beingthat the hoof does not tend to overgrow the shoe and the shoe has no tendency to press against the soft part of. the

horses foot, so that no callous vplaces are formed.

What isclaimed isp A horseshoe comprising separate members each including a side and a portion of the toe of the shoe, said toe portions being halved and overlapped, the overlapping portion of one member having a slot extending transversely of the shoe and the overlapping por- 9 tion of the other member having an elliptical stud disposed transversely of the shoe and engaged in the slot, said stud having a sliding and a limited pivotal movement in the slot.
