SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 751,489, dated. February 9, 1904. Application filed June6, 1903. Serial No. 160,4.23. (NomodeL) T0 al whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JAMES ETHERIDGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hamilton, in the county of Butler and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Casters, of which the following is aspecification.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements in furniture-casters; and its object is to provide a caster capable of swinging so as to permit the article of furniture to which it is attached to move smoothly over uneven surfaces. I

The invention consists in providing a yoke or housing having a spindle therein, upon which are journaled, preferably, two rollers. An arm extends downward between these roll- This arm has a cone, which forms a bearing for a stem, which projects downward from a cap adapted to be secured in any suitable manner within the leg of an article of furniture. Adjustably mounted upon the stem is a sleeve having a T-shaped extension which is so mounted within a groove upon the housing as to permit said housing to swing laterally in relation to the stem and its cap.

The invention also consists in the further novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described, and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in which Figure 1 is a rear elevation of my improved caster. Fig. 2 is a plan View thereof with the cap removed. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 3, Fig. 1; and Fig. 4: is a detail view of the sleeve detached.

Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 is a yoke or housing having an 1nte' gral arm 2 extending downward from the center thereof and provided with a rear extension 3. A cone 4 is formed upon the extension 3 and projects into a recess 5, formed within the lower end of a threaded stem 6, which is integral with and projects downward from the center of a cap 7 A nut 8 is adjustably mounted upon the threaded stem 6 and serves to support a sleeve 9, which is loosely mounted on the stem and is provided in its upper face with a raceway 10, within which are located balls 11, which serve the purposes of bearings for the cap 7 A lug 12 extends from the inner face of the sleeve 9 at its lower end and projects into a recess 13, formed in the upper portion of arm 2, and in vertical alinement with lug 12 is a T-shaped arrn 14, which is loosely mounted in a recess 15, formed in the top of the housing 1, as illustrated in Fig. 2. This recess is so shaped as to permit a slight lateral movement of the T- shaped arm 14; therein. It will be seen that the nut 8 will bind the parts together, and as the housing 1 is free to move laterally in relation to the stem 6 and cap 7 it will be seen that an article of furniture having'this caster thereon can be moved over an uneven surface and both rollers of the caster will at all times remain in contact with thesurface.

In theforegoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; butI do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to makesuch changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new"is In a caster, the combination with a housing having rollers journaled therein, and an integral arm extending from the housing and between the rollers; of a cap, a stem integral therewith and bearing upon the arm, a sleeve loosely and adjustably mounted upon the stem, said sleeve forming a bearing for the cap, a T-shaped arm extending laterally from the sleeve and engaging the housing, and a lug integral With the sleeve engaging the arm, said arm and the lug of the sleeve permitting independent lateral movement of the housing and stem.
