SAMUEL STEPHEN ARNOLD, OF TORONTO, CANADA, ASSIGN OR OF ONE-HALF TO SAMUEL WEYLIE MOKEOWN, OF SAME PLACE.
COMBINED CASTER AND SPRING CORNER-PROTECTOR FOR TRUNKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 450,349, dated April 14, 1891.
' Application filed January 26, 1891. Serial No. 379,191. (No model.)
ments in a Combination Caster and Spring Corner-Protector for Trunks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the san1e,reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my coinbination caster and spring corner-protector.
Fig. 2 is a plan or top view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a section on line X31, Fig. 2.
My invention has for its object to combine with a corner-protector having an interior spring or buffer to lessen the force of impact with the ground of a trunk in falling a caster, which, when the trunk isin an inclined position resting on one corner, will roll when the trunk is pushed sidewise in the direction required. I
My invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
A represents a corner frame or castin g havin g three divergent sides, and at the convergent end a tubular neck B, said sides having holes 0, through which the frame is fastened to the corner of a trunk by screws, and the orifice in the neck B has at the bottom internally an annular flange D.
E is a frusto conical thimble inserted through the neck B from the inside of frame A and projects therefrom and fills the orifice, and said thimble is provided with an outward flange K around the base, which flange seats on said annular flange D of the neck B to prevent the thimble falling out, and said thimble receives the impact when the trunk falls cornerwise to the ground.
F is a truncated conical thimble within the thimble E, and both thimbles are provided at the center with a concave indentation opposite to one another, and are separated by a loose anti-friction ball G, bearing in said indentations to lessen the frictional contact of the two thimbles when the thimbleE bears on the ground and is rotated by the trunk being pushed sidewise, the corner-protector being then in an inclined position, as shown in Fig. 1.
H is an elastic rubber buffer or coiled-wire spring inserted in the thimble F, and said buffer or spring projects to bear against the corner of the trunk to receive the thrust of the thimble when the trunk falls on one corner, the spring then yielding to lessen the force of impact with the ground.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination, with the corner franle A, having a tubular neck B, of the frustoconical thimble E, projecting through said neck, the truncated conical thimble F, fitting within said thimble E, and a rubber buffer H within the thimble F and projecting therefrom, said thimbles nesting in frictional contact, whereby the thimble E will rotate, as set forth.
2. The combination, with the corner-frame A, having a tubular neck B, of the frustoconical thimble E, projecting through said neck, the anti-frictional ball G, seated within the thimble, the truncated conical thimble F, bearing on said ball, and the rubber buffer H, filling the thimble F and projecting from the end thereof, as set forth.
SAMUEL STEPHEN ARNOLD.
