SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 751,022, dated February 2, 1904.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ANDREW SoNANDnR, a citizen of the United States,residing at Springfield, in the county of Clark and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvem ents in Reversing-Gears, of which the following is a specification. H
My invention relates to power transmission, and more particularly to reversing-wheels.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, compact, and efi'icient gear-wheel designed especially to withstand the shocks and strains incident to use in driving traction-engines, but adapted for use wherever reversing gears or wheels are required.
A further object is to provide an improved form of friction-clutch with auxiliary devices adapted to reverse the operation of the wheel.
A further object is to so construct and arrange the parts that the clutch mechanism can be thrown out of engagement and the gear remain at rest.
My invention consists of the constructions and combinations hereinafter described, and set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a crosssection of a gear embodying my invention, said section being taken on the line :0 a: of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 shows the gearing for reversing the wheel, with friction-clutches in dotted lines; and Fig. 3 is a view on the line w :0 of Fig. 1, showing the friction-clutches.
Like parts are represented by similar letters of reference in the several views.
On a shaft 0 there is journaled a revolving frame which is formed in two parts, a and y, as shown, which permits the placing of the interior mechanism as hereinafter described. The part :0 is rigid to the shaft, and the part y by an arm y is secured to any suitable support and held stationary. Said frame is formed with a hub (4, having radial extensions which support a rim a loosely mounted thereon. Said rim is shown with cogs a upon its outer periphery, adapted to mesh with any suitable gear for the purpose of transmitting power. Said rim is further provided with cogs (L5 on its inner periphery and a recess a for the purpose hereinafter described. Within the frame and journaled on the hub 60 thereof a gear 6 is adapted to mesh with pinions b, which in turn mesh with the cogs (1. of the rim, the pinions 6 being mounted on shafts o journaled in the stationary part 1 of the frame. An extension 6 of the gear 6 is provided with a recess 6*, similar to the recess a of the rim. A longitudinally-movable sleeve 0 rotates with the shaft a, any suitable means being employed to give it longitudinal movement. Links 0 are pivoted at one end to opposite sides of said sleeve, the other ends being pivoted to one end of levers 0 which extend through openings in the side of the frame, the other ends of said levers being pivoted to said frame. Shoes 0 within said frame on opposite sides thereof are pivoted to said levers 0 intermediate of the pivoted ends of said levers, the arrangement being such that said shoes can travel free of the rim 6& or be thrown into frictional engagement therewith by the longitudinal movement of the sleeve 0. Links (Z are pivoted at one end to opposite sides of the sleeve 0, the other ends being pivoted to one end of levers cl, which extend through openings in the side of the frame, the other ends of said levers being pivoted to shoes (Z said lever being pivoted intermediate of its pivoted ends to said frame, the arrangement being such that the shoes (Z can travel free of the extension on the gear 5 or be thrown into frictional engagement therewith by the longitudinal movement of the sleeve 0. The contacting portions of the-shoes and the recesses are preferably substantially V-shaped in form, so that when thrown into engagement the shoes will be wedged into the recesses, and it will be seen that the shoes 0 will be thrown into engagement with the recesses of the rim and the shoes (Z will be thrown out of engagement with the recesses of the gear 6 simultaneously by the longitudinal movement of the sleeve 0 in one direction, and the operation will be reversed by the movement of the sleeve in the opposite direction, the result being that when the shoes 0 are in engagement with the rim the rim will be rotated in the same direction with the shaft; but when the shoes (Z are in engagement with the gear I) it will through the pinions 6 rotate the rim in the opposite direction. In the drawings I have shown the rim with cogs on its outer periphery forming a gear; but these cogs may be omitted to form a friction or belt or other form of drive without departing from the spirit of my invention. Furthermore, I have shown four pinions b; but three or more may be used, as desired. It will be further seen that when the sleeve is midway of its longitudinal movement the shoes will be released from engagement with the rim and gear and the rim will be at rest.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. The combination with a power-shaft and a wheel-rim, of intermediate supporting, driving and shifting devices, said rim being journaled on said supporting devices and adapted to be driven in either direction by said drivin% and shifting devices, substantially as specifie 2. The combination with a power-shaft and awheel-rim, of intermediate supporting, driving and friction clutch devices, said rim being journaled on said supporting devices and adapted to be driven in either direction by said driving and friction clutch devices, substantially as specified.
3. The combination with a power-shaft, a wheel-rim and a frame on said shaft independent of but adapted to support said rim, of intermediate driving and shifting devices adapted to drive said rim in either direction, substantially as specified.
4. The combination with a power-shaft, a wheel-rim and a frame on said shaft adapted to support said rim, of means including friction-clutch devices operated by said shaft and adapted to be shifted to drive said rim in either direction, substantially as specified.
5. The combination with a power-shaft, a wheel-rim, and a frame on said shaft on which said rim is journaled, of intermediate driving and clutch mechanism to drive said rim and means to shift said clutch mechanism to drive said rim in either direction.
6. The combination with a power-shaft, a wheel-rim and a frame on said shaft on which said rim is journaled, of means including friction-clutch devices operated by said shaft to drive said rim, and means to shift said devices to drive said rim in either direction, substantially as specified. 1, r g
7 The combination with a power-shaft, a wheel-rim having cogs on its inner periphery, and a hub on said shaft having radial extensions adapted to support said rim, pinions on said frame adapted to mesh with said cogs of the rim, and a gear on said hub adapted to mesh with each of said pinions, of two sets of oppositely-disposed frictional clutches, one set adapted to engage said rim and the other set said gear, one set being in engagement while the other is released, and means to simultaneously shift the respective sets, for the purpose specified.
8. The combination with a power-shaft, a wheel-rim having cogs on its inner periphery, and a hub on said shaft having radial extensions adapted to support said rim, pinions on said frame adapted to mesh with said cogs of the rim, and a gear on said hub adapted to mesh with each of said pinions, of two sets of oppositely-disposed frictional clutches, one set adapted to engage said rim and the other set said gear, one set being in engagement while the other is released, a longitudinally-movable sleeve on said shaft having connections with said clutches adapted to simultaneously shift the respective sets of clutches in and out of engagement upon the longitudinal movement of said sleeve, substantially as specified.
9. The combination with a power-shaft, a wheel-rim and a divided frame on said shaft to support said rim, one part of said frame adapted to be held stationary and the other fixed to said shaft, of intermediate driving and shifting devices and means to operate said shifting devices whereby said rim is driven in either direction.
10. The combination with a power-shaft, a wheel-rim and a divided frame on said shaft on which said rim is journaled, one part of said frame adapted to be held stationary and the other fixed on said shaft, of intermediate devices, including friction-clutches, operated by said shaft, to drive said rim, and means to shift said clutches to drive said rim in either direction.
