PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH D. KING, OF WELLSVILLE, MISSOURI.
SPARK-ARRESTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 750,658, dated January 26, 1904. Application filed July 14, 1903- Serial No. 165,500. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OSEPH D. KING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wells-- ville, Montgomery county, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spark-Arresters, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to improvements in spark-arresters, and has for its object to provide a detachable and vertically-adjustable spark-arrester for locomotives.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side View of the front end of a locomotive, showing my improved spark-arrester in place, the upper portion of the spark-arrester being shown in section. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side View of my spark-arrester. Fig. 3 is a bottom View of the same.
The base of my spark-arrester consists of the collar 1, which is formed in two sections, as shown, the sections being provided with outwardly-projecting lugs 2 and fastened together by means of bolts 3. The rods 4 are riveted to the collar 1 and are of the form shown in the drawings, their upper ends being riveted to the circular plate 5. The inverted metallic cone 6 depends from the plate 5, and its base is surrounded by the metallic web 7, the base of the metallic web being secured to the ring 8, which is held in place between the rods i and by contact therewith. By means of the bolts 3 the collar 1 is adjustable to different sizes of smoke-stacks, and the spark-arrester is vertically adjustable upon the smoke-stack, as the collar 1 may be raised or lowered, as desired. inverted cone 6 serves to distribute the ascending sparks around the base of the cone and against the web 7.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to have secured to me by the grant of Letters Patent, is
A spark-arrester,consisting of a collar, rods extending upwardly from the collar and bent inwardly at their upper extremities, a circular plate carried by the upper extremities of the rods, an inverted cone carried by the circular plate, and a metallic web surrounding the base of the cone, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOSEPH D. KING.
