WILLIAM L. BUCK, OF CUBA, ILLINOIS.
SPARK-ARRESTER.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. BUCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cuba, in the county of Fulton and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Spark-Arresters, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an improvement in spark arresters designed primarily for connection with the stack of a locomotive and serviceable in directing sparks and other solid particles rising with the smoke in a downward or lateral direction.
The main object of the present invention is the provision of a spark arrester formed for the interception of the rising` sparks and solid particles and then directing them laterally and on to the road bed, the deflecting elements permitting the free passage of the vapor and gaseous products therethrough, whereby interference with the draft is avoided.
The invention in its preferred form of details will be described in the following speciiication, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the improvement applied. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same.
The improved spark arrester comprises a comparatively narrow U-shaped holder 1 having a length slightly less than the diameter of the stack 2. The holder is secured to and immediately above the upper free end of the stack by uprights 3 adapted to close the end of the holder and depending below the same, the uprights being secured to the stack wall by bolts 4; held in position by nuts 5.
The arrester proper comprises a strip of foraminous material such as screen cloth, comparative large mesh, having a central holding loop portion 5 from which the respective strips project upwardly and outwardly into curved form, providing deflectors 6. The deiiectors 6 curve above and outwardly beyond the stack and have depending terminal ends 7 located wholly beyond the wall of the stack. Braces 8 connect the ends of the Specification of Letters Patent.

terminal portion 7 to t-he stack proper, thus securing the outer ends of the deflectors in position. A loop portion 5 of the arrester is seated within the holder 1 and the bolt 9 is passed longitudinally of the holder within and above the loop portion 5, the head of the bolt bearing against the outer surface of one o-f the upriglits, and the opposite threaded endof the bolt being secured by a nut 10 bearing against the outer surface of the other upright- The rear edge of t-he curved portion of each deflector is connected to the transverse section 11 of screen cloth, these sections being of the full height of the deflectors above the holder and forming rear abutment to prevent the passage of the sparks or other solid materials in rearward direction.
In use the sparks and solid particles rising through the stack Aare divided by the holder and pass upwardly in contact with the respective deflect-ors, such particles being arrested and by reason of the formation of the deflectors turn into downward directio-n beyond the stack and toward the road bed. The sections 11 compel such travel of the particles as they prevent direct rearward travel, as will be obvious.
From the above construction it will be understood that the sparks and solid particles are defiected laterally and downwardly from the stack, and hence will by the suction created in the travel of the train be drawn on to the road bed and prevented from passing longitudinally of the train or their being spread over a wide area beyond the road bed.
What is claimed is:
1. A spark arrester including a holder adapt-ed to be removably secured to the stack, and deiiecting elements secured to the holder and rising therefrom in an outwardly curved direction, the ends 0f the deliectors extending downwardly, said deflectors being formed of screen cloth, and arresting sections secured to the rear edges of the curved portions.
2. A spark arrester including a holder adapted to be removably secured to the stack,
. deflect-ing elements secured to the holderv and rising therefrom in an outwardly curved d- In testimony whereof I aflx my signature reoton, the endsdof the deeotors extendling in presence of two witnesses.
downwardl sai deectors bein@ formec of s y screen olotlr; arresting sectonsbsecured to WILLIAM L' BUQI" the rear edges of the curved portions, and braces secured to the downwardly extending portions of the deleotors and to the stack.
