IMPROVEMENT IN corren-Pore.

T0 ALL WHQM IT CONGERN:
Be it vknown that I, Josnrn Nas'oN, of the city and county-of 'New York, and State of lNewYork, have invented certain new, anduseful-Improvemcnts in Apparatus for Boiling`and-Filtering Coffee, as fully described and` set forth in the following speciiication .and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical sect-ion of the'apparatns and oontents, ready for operation.
Figure 2, the same during'the boiling process'. i
Iigure 3,`the same after the boiling and filtering processes have been completed.
.'My invention relates to a well-known class of' co'ec-pots, which, under various modifications, consist of two'distin'ct and separate vessels, in which the processes of boiling and filtering are successively performed,
the first, `or boiling process, being effected through the agency .of thevapor of boiling water, and the second, orlteringprocess, bythe aid of atmospheric pressure, the receptacle-for `the filtered deection beingrendered partially vacuous by the condensation oi' the vapor. I 'i l My improvements'are designed to rendei` these 'processes more certain and easy of accomplishment than `they han be? in the. apparatus hitherto in use. A -I will first describe what I consider the best means of carrying out my invention, and will afterwards designate the points I believe to be new therein. r
" 'The accompanying drawings foi-m a part of this specilcation i Figsl, 2,'-nnd Srepresent'each the 'saine' apperatuashowing a ceutraivertieaisection;"
- There is a single cylindrical vessel, A, standing upright, and divided by the diaphragm B, so as 4to form tv ro receptacles,l C and D, the receptacle@ being uppermost. To' the under side of-.the diaphragm Bis fixed Athe shallow cylindrical vessel. or filter-'well E, from which depends thesmall tube F, reaching nearlyto the bot- .tom of the'receptacleC G is the iilter,'which is' made of vwire cloth or perforated plate, and stretched upon the top of a ring or hoop, H, which ring is made to t-the well E so-nicely that when pushedflown intoits place it will be held securely. The 'ring H is' provided with a handle, I, prolonged above tbe-surface of .the liquid, by meanslot which the ring and lter may be conveniently removed orgadjusted. J is an air-cock,.insert ed near Vthe top of the lower receptacle C. K is the cock through which the decoction is' drawn oli'.
,j The operation` is as follows:v The air-cock J, having been opened, and the'draW-oli` cock K closed, water is to be poured into the receptacle D, frourwhence it will readily run through the-lter 'Grind 'tube Finto the r-eceptacleC. 'The quantity f water thussupplie'd may be varied at pleasurh., but it should not exceed three= fourths of the capacity of the recioptacle C. The coiec, previously prepared by roasting and grinding ,in the" usual manner, is next tobe put into the receptacle D, and the apparatusgis then readyfor the appliotion of heat, 'either from a lamp, as shown in ig..1, or from'n stoyeor other convenient modeof heating.v When the water has reached the boiling-point, and steam is seen to issue strongly from thocQclcJQindicating that the nir in C has beenentirely displaced, the cock is Vto be closed.- The elastic force 4of the steam, thus confined,
willvthen press upon. the surfaceof the water, causing it to' iow upward through the tube F into,A the receptacle D, untilit lias'falleniu the lower receptacle C, belonthecndof the tube F, when 4steern'will enter and ilow through the tube, permeat'ing the 'water in theupperfreceptacle D, andvcausing it to. boil, as shown in ig.'2.
.The boilingprocesspnny be continued, if necessary, until 4the remaining water-'in the lower receptacle C has been exhausted by evaporation, but it should in every case bearrested as soon as theco'ee has beensuiciently decoctd, (say in from tivo t5V fonrminutesg by extinguishing-.the flame ofthe lamp or removing the vessel from the fire. X The process of filtration-,immediately follows. As the steam in the lower-space C becomes gradually cooled 'by the refrigerating action of the surrounding air, its elastic force falls below that of the atmosphere, which,
consequently, aeting upon tlic surface of the liqud'decoction in the upper space D, presses itd'ownward through the tilter'G and tube into tho lower receptacle C, from whence, aifteriopening the air-cock J; the l clear decocA lAlthough' I have described theniore essenti'o.l\""i'unctions of the air-cock J, I will mention one or tivo further advantages' resulting from its usesom-et'imes happens, 'during theliltering process, that the vacuous con. ditifoh'o thereceptacle'beqmsisqfimpaired by some slight imperfection and y.leakage of'the vessel o r itsappendages that the operation issuspended beforevthe whole of the decoction has passed through the lter. In such eases it is only necessary to open the air-cock and apply heat in the manner already described, until the air in C is displaced und expelled through the cock by the steam thus generated. Upon closing the cock, and V y g thevessel to cool, the space in C will again become vacuous, and the filtering process `will geen as before.
' `When the decoetion is n ot'to be drawn el? for imrnediate use, it becomes desirable to keep it 'at' or near the boilingpoint. It the receptacle C were hermetically closed it would be'searcely possible to apply the requisite amount of heat without forcing its contents back aganinto D, thus making it necessary to repeat the filtering process', and injuring the quality of'the decoetion by contact with. the exhausted codec-grounds. This contingoney, to which other machines are liable, is wholly avoided by leavingtheair`cock open, and allowing the free escape of any vapor that may be generated in C.
My apparatus may be constructed more cheaply, and is more durable und convenient than any which involves the use ot`- -two vessels, in which the processes of boiling und filtering are performed successively.v
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire toisecure by Letters Patent, s-'
The employment of. two cocks, communicating respectively with the upper and ylower parts of the chamyber cfa duplex coiee-urn, the several parts being constructed and arranged forjointoperation,'substantially as and for-:the purposes hereinset forth.
JOSEPH NASON.
