Description

UNITED STATES Patented January 19, 1904.
PATENT OFFICE.-
LUOIOUS D. BURLINGHAM, OF WARREN, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE WARREN NOVELTY COMPANY, OF WARREN, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
UAR-SEALING WRENCH.
SPEGIFICATIONforming part of Letters Patent No.75 O,16? dated January 19, 1904.
Application filed May 21, 1903.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUoIoUs D. BURLING- HAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Warren, in the county of Trumbull and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful J ar- Sealing Wrench, of which the following is a specification. 1
This invention relates to jar-cover straight.- eners, and one of the principal objects thereof is to provide an implement capable of efliciently straightening the edge of the securingflange of the cover or cap, so as to cause it to firmly bind against the jar-body or the interposed gasket usually employed in sealing vessels of this character.
As is well known, the common types of jars are not always perfect in form, but sometimes possess irregularities which prevent an equal pressure of the cover thereagainst, thereby permitting the interior gases to escape and exterior gases to be admitted, to the detriment of the contents. From various causes the edges of the jar-covers are not straight to evenly bear upon the jar-body, and it is the purpose of this invention to overcome these defects to permit the cover to have a uniform bearing upon the surface of the jar.
To this end the invention consists in certain novel features to be specifically referred to hereinafter, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the invention applied, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same.
The device is illustrated as comprising two members, one of which comprises an engaging jaw in the form of a ring 1, having a tooth 2 for engagement with the groove in the cover, and a handle 3, wherebythe ring can be, ro-

tated. Within a recess in the ring is a revoluble presser member 4:, illustrated as a disk, having a beveled edge 5 to bear against the flange of the cover and smooth out any irregularities therein, as well as force the flange edgie into contact with the body of the receptao e.
In practice the tooth 2 will be caused to engage the groove of the cover, and by rotating the jaw so that the revoluble presser member will remain in contact with the cover the edge will be firmly engaged with the gasket or the jar-body, efiecting a tight joint. The pressure upon the handle governs the amount of pressure upon jar-cover.
I claim- 1. A device for straightening jar-covers, comprising a ring of greater diameter than the cover, an engaging tooth carried by the ring for engagement with the threads of the cover, a rotatable presser member movable into engagement with the lower portion of the cover when the tooth engages the threads,
' 2. A device for straightening jar-covers, comprising a ring of greater diameter than the cover and having a tooth on the same plane asthe adjacent portion of the ring for engagement with the threads of the cover, and a presser member for contact with the lower portion of the cover and movable transversely of the threads of the cover.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
LUOIOUS D. BURLINGHAM.
