HENRY ROGKMAN, OF ALLISON TOWNSHIP, LYON COUNTY, IOWA.
GROUND-MARKING DEVICE FOR CORN-PLANTERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 749,581, dated January 12, 1904.
Application filed August 12, 1903. Serial No. 169,216. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY RooKMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the township of Allison, in the county of Lyon and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ground-Marking Devices for Corn-Planters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in corn-planters, more particularly in the ground-marking devices therefor.
It has for its object to provide against the undue or too-deep penetration of the soil or ground in effecting the marking of the same for guidance in dropping or planting corn.
It is also characterized for simplicity, is readance which may be termed a gage 2, prefer:
ably of steel, with its face tapered to a horizontal ridge or apex 2*, practically forming a shoulder. Said gage is preferably produced of uniform or plate-like thickness throughout, including its end portions, or, in other words, is hollow, thus being light, while possessing the requisite strength or durability. The securing of said gage in place may be effected by means of screws or other suitable fastenings inserted through the marking-device blade and engagingor screwed into said gage near each end about at a point intercepting the ridge of said gage. Said gage is arranged about an inch from the outer end or edge of the marking-device blade, and practically from the apex of said gage to said outer end or edge is about two inches. The purpose of said gage is to prevent the markingblade sinking or penetrating too deeply into the soil or ground, as would otherwise be the case, especially in soft ground, and thus preserve the proper spacing in dropping or planting the corn.
Said marking device has its central or bladespoke hub portion produced, preferably, of a solid piece or plate 3 instead of a number of pieces and devoid of all springs, as heretofore, said hub or plate being fixed to a carrying member I, suitably mounted upon the cornplanter.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a corn-planter, a marking device embracing a radial revolving arm carrying at its outer end a blade provided upon itsfront surface with a transverse gage tapered to a horizontal ridge arranged inward a certain distance from the ground-engaging end of said blade.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit nesses.
