To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LESTER CERF, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at the borough of Brooklyn, city of New York, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful YImprovements in Adding-Machines, of which the following is a specication.
My invention has reference to improvements in adding-machines, and particularly to an adding mechanism which can be readily attached to or connected with an ordinary typewriting machine.
My invention has for its objects to provide an adding mechanism of a simple construction which is not liable to get out of order and is adapted for high speed with eXtreme accuracy. v
To this end my invention consists, essentially, in an adding-machine comprising a carrier rotatably mounted, a series of interconnecting registering devices on said carrier arranged concentrically with its aXis, an actuating mechanism adapted to engage with and operate the individual registering devices, and means for imparting a step-by-step movement to said carrier for presenting the registering devices successively to the actuating mechanism, and also in a combined type-writing and adding machine comprising a motor-impelled carrier rotatably mounted, a series of interconnecting registering devices on said carrier arranged concentrically with its anis, an actuating mechanism adapted to engage with and operate the individual registering devices, and means for imparting a step-by-step movement to said carrier for presenting the regison an enlarged scale, of the adding mechanism with the counter removed. Referring now to the drawings, the letter A designates what I shall herein term the counter, the same comprising a carrier and the elements necessary for registering and adding when the counter is operated by the actuating mechanism of the machine. rl`he carrier is rotatably mounted upon a spindle a, secured to the frame B of the machine, and carries a series of ratchet-wheels 7) b2 b3, Snc., arranged in a circle concentric with the spindle o and each provided with ten teeth. These ratchetwheels are engaged by suitable spring-pawls c for preventing retrograde motion, and on the arbors (Z or' the former are rigidly mounted gear-wheels c. These gear-wheels c engage with a circular series of intermediate gearsf, each having one long tooth, as usual in counters, for the purpose or' advancing the succeeding registering-hand through -one space when the preceding hand is turned through ten spaces. To the ends of the arbors CZ are arlXed registering-hands g, arranged adjacent to the respective dials 7L /f 7b3, Sac., aiiiXed to or forming part or' the face of the carrier.
It will be readily understood from the foregoing that if any one or' the ratchet-wheels L b2, &c., is turned the corresponding registering-hand g is moved over its dial It if, &c., through a corresponding distance. The
ratchet-wheels t .712 b3, zc., are adapted to be successively engaged when brought to a predetermined point by a ratchet-bar C, the teeth of which are sutlicient in number to completely turn the corresponding ratchetwheel on a complete forward stroke of said bar, while on IOO the return stroke the bar passes over the teeth without affecting the respective wheel. The bar in the present instance is secured at 1 to a lever-arm 2, hinged at 3 to a slide 4, guided in suitable ways in the frame B. The lever 3 is pressed toward the counter and against a suitable stop 5 by a spring 6, and in this position the ratchet-bar C is in line with the teeth of the respective ratchet-wheel b 52 3, &c., and will turn the same when moved downwardly. A spring 7, preferably in the form of a spiral spring attached at one end to a circular hub on the frame 3 and at its other end to a pin 8,pro jecting from the rear of the slide 4 and passing through a slot 9 in the frame B, tends to hold the slide in its upper or normal position. The slide is drawn downwardly to actuate the ratchet-wheel of the counter by a suitable mechanism placed in connection with the. iinger-keys. This mechanism will be described presently.
r1`he counter A is advanced in a step-by-step movement to bring the ratchet-wheels Z/ 12263, &c., successively before or in alinement with the ratchet-bar C when the slide is finishing its upward stroke by the following means, (see Figs. 3, 5, and 7:) The carrier A is subjected to the action of a spiral spring 10, having one end secured to the spindle a and its other and to a hub 11 on said carrier and said spring tending to turn the carrier in the direction of arrow 1, Figs. 4 and 5. Of course the carrier, and consequently the counter A, may be impelled by any other suitable motive force. This movement of the carrier is controlled by an escapement, Figs. 3, 4, and 7, consisting of a pallet-lever 12, hinged at 13 to the frame B and provided at its lower end with a pallet 14, having therein a passageway 18. This pallet is disposed in the path of a double ser-ies of staggered pins 16 and 17, circularly arranged on the carrier, and is adapted to alternately engage with one or the other of each set of pins. When the palletlever is in the position shown by full lines in Fig. 3, the pin 16 of one set rests upon the pallet 14 close to the edge of the passage-way 18, and when the lever is moved to the position indicated by broken lines the pin 16 passes through the passage-way, and the carrier turns through a slight distance, whereupon its motion is arrested by the pin 17 engaging with the pallet 14. When the lever returns to its normal position, (full lines,) pin 17 passes through the passage-way 18, and the carrier turns through one complete step, whereupon its motion is arrested by the pin 16 of the neXt succeding set of pins engaging with the pallet. The inner side of the pallet 14 is inclined downwardly and outwardly, so that when the counter is turned in a direction reverse to that indicated by the arrow by hand the pins 16 and 17 can pass through the passage-way by forcing the pallet to one side. The carrier has also a projecting stop 24,
adapted to engage with the pallet 14 and entirely arrest the advance movement of the counter. In this position of the counter the ratchet-wheel b', corresponding to the unitsdial L, is in alinement with the ratchet-bar C, and its teeth are adapted to be engaged by the same. This position is the normal position of the counter and is indicated by two fixed marksy'jon the counter and on its frame, as indicated in Fig. 2. Near its upper end the pallet-lever 12 is provided with a pallet 19, which is adapted to be engaged by a trip 20, formed on or secured to the top of the slide 4, and the upper end of the pallet-lever is also adapted to be engaged by an anchor 21, provided for this purpose with a shoulder 22, and said anchor is also provided with a projecting nib 23, arranged in the path of the trip. The downward movement of the slide 4 for effecting' the propulsion of the ratchet-bar C may be induced by a usual series of keys and key-bars, such as are employed in type-writing or adding machines. ln Figs. 1 and 2 vI have shown a shaft D placed below the series of key-bars and provided with a series of inwardly-projecting key-cams fm. m m2, &c., located beneath and adjacent to the key-bars of the respective numeral-keys L0 7'," Sac., Figs. 8 and 9. The finger-key cams are of different curvatures, and said curvature iiicreases from the cam fm, to the cam m, the linger-key cams being so disposed that when the key 1 is depressed the ratchet-bar C is moved a linear distance sufficient to turn the ratchet-wheel through one tooth. lNhen the finger-key corresponding to the key-bar is depressed, the ratchet wheel L is turned through two teeth, cc. The linger-key cani m0 only moves the slide 4 a suiiicient distance to trip the escapeinent and causes no operation of the corresponding ratchet-wheel. The shaft D is provided with an inwardly-pi'ojecting arm 25, connected by a link 26 with a pin 8, attached to the slide 4. A suitable stop-rail 28, located beneath the key-bars, limits the downward movement of the same.
The counter can be turned in a direction opposite to that indicated by arrow 1, Fig. 4, by means of a head 27, connected to ahub on the carrier, for the purpose of setting any one of the dials opposite to the ratchet-bar C, thus throwing the corresponding ratchet-wheels into alinement with said ratchet-bar.
I will now proceed to describe the operation of the machine as here presented. Assuming the mechanism to be in its normal position-that is, with the counter in the position shown in Fig. 2, whei'e the marks y',y' register and the units-wheel is in alinement with the ratchet-bar C, which latter is in its upper position, and the pin 16 of the carrier is in engagement with the pallet 14 of the lever IIO '1Q-*let the following numbers be addedto wit., 7,560 and 943. The first number having four integers, the counter is turned through four dials to the left, thus bringing the thousands ratchet-wheel L* in alinement with the ratchet-bar C. The finger-key corresponding' to key-bar ,7.57 is then depressed. The depression of this key turns the key-cam /17 downwardly, and in view of the connection of the shaft D with the slide 4 the latter is drawn downwardly a sufficient distance to turn the ratchet-wheel d" through seven teeth and the corresponding registering-hand points to c7 on the thousands dial. During the first small part of the downward movement of the slide 4 the trip 20 thereon engag'es with the pallet 19 on the pallet-lever 12 and turns the same into the position shown in Fig'.
3 by dotted lines, thus permitting the pin 16 on the counter-casing' to pass through the passage-way 18 in the pallet 14. This allows a slight angular movement of the counter,which is limited by the engagement of the pin 17 with the pallet 14. The pallet-lever is held in this position by the shoulder 22 of the anchor 21 engaging with the same, as shown in Fig. 4, during the remaining downward stroke of the slide 4. r1`he counter therefore remains in this slightlyadvanced position until after the finger-key has been released and until the slide approaches the end of its upward stroke under the infiuence of the spring' 7, when the trip 20 engages with the nib 23 of the anchor 21 and releases the pallet-lever from the same, thus allowing' it to return to its normal position under the influence of its spring. In this position the pin 17 can pass through the passage-way 18 in the pallet 14 and the counter turns through one stepvthat is, until the neXt pin 16 engages with the body of the pallet. This movement brings the next dial 7a3 in alinement with the ratchet-bar C. The key of key-bar 71:5 is now depressed and released with a repeated operation of the mechanism, and the tens ratchetwheel b2 is advanced into alinement with the ratchet-bar C. On the depression and release of the finger-key 6 the operation is again repeated and the units ratchet-wheel is in alinement with the ratchet-bar C, and further rotary motion of the counter is arrested by the pin 24 engaging the pallet. The last numeral being' a cipher, the depression vof the fingerkey /fio has no effect upon the ratchet-wheel 1f the cipher were in the hundreds or other higher place, the slight movement of the slide is just suflicient to release the counter, so as to bring' the next dial into position. The dials on the counter now register 7 560. To add thereto 943 thesame operation is repeated, the counter first being set to bring the hundreds ratchet-wheel in line. After completed operations the dials then register 8503. r1`he types t are actuated to print the numerals, as usual.
To provide for the disengagement of the counter when it is not desired to add while writing, I provide a suitable cut-out, such as the lever 30, pivoted to the frame B, to which the spring 35 is attached, and said lever being' provided with a toe adapted to eng'ag'e a notched spring-catch 31. By turning the lever 30 to the right the lever 2, carrying the ratchet-bar C, is moved over to throw the latter out of alinement with the ratchet -wheels b2 3, &c. The notches in the catch 31 hold the lever in either of its terminal positions.
Vhile l have herein shown the adding mechanism in connection with and operated by a type-writing' machine, it is of course to be understood that the counter and its actuating' mechanism may be used in connection with .a set ofusual finger-keys and the printing of the numerals dispensed with, as in ordinary adding, calculating', or totalizing machines. l wish it also to be distinctly understood that the specific actuating mechanism for the counter' may be changed or altered without departing from the spirit of my invention, as the latter consists, essentially, in the planetary arrangement of the dials. It is also to be understood that in place of the dials and registering-hands the usual registering-wheels and sight-openings in the cover of the casing can be used, or any other known suitable form of indicating devices can be substituted.
Vhat I claim as new is* 1. An adding-machine comprising a carrier rotatably mounted, a series of interconnecting registering devices on said carrier arranged concentrically with its axis, an actuating' mechanism adapted to engage with and operate the individual registering devices, Vand means for imparting a step-b f-step movement to said carrier for presenting the registering devices successively to the actuating' mechanism, substantially as described.
2. An adding-machine comprising' a carrier rotatably mounted, a series of interconnecting' registering' devices on said carrier arranged concentrically with its axis, an actuating' mechanism adapted to engage with and operate the individual registering devices, and means for imparting a step-by-step movement to the carrier for presenting' the registering devices successively to the actuating mechanism controlled by said actuating' mechanism for the registering devices, substantially as described.
3. An adding-machine comprising a motorimpelled carrier rotatably mounted, a series of interconnecting'registeringdevices on said carrier arranged concentrically with its axis, an actuating mechanism adapted to engag'e with and operate the individual registering devices, and an escapement controlling the movements of the carrier operated by the actuating mech- IOO IIO
anism for the registering' devices, substantially as described.
4. An adding-machine comprising' a motorimpelled carrier rotatably mounted, a series of interconnecting registering devices on said carrier arranged concentrically with its axis, a series of finger-keys, an actuating mechanism in connection with said keys and adapted to engage with and operate the individual registering devices, and an escapement for the carrier operated by the actuating mechanism for the registering devices for permitting a stepby-step advancement of the carrier under the iniuence of its motor, substantially as described.
5. An adding-machine comprising a carrier rotatably mounted, a series of interconnecting' registering devices on said carrier arranged concentrically with its axis, means for imparting rotary movement to the carrier, a double series of staggered pins projecting from the carrier, a pallet-lever having a passage-way for the pins, an anchor adapted to engage with saidpallet-lever, and actuating means adapted to engage with and operate the individual registering devices and adapted to engage with the pallet-lever and the anchor for releasing the carrier from the pallet-lever for its step-by-step advancement, substantially as described.
6. An adding-machine comprising a carrier rotatably mounted, a series of interconnecting registering devices on said carrier arranged concentrically with its axis, an actuating mechanism adapted to engage with and operate the individual registering devices, means controlled by the actuating mechanism for the registering devices for imparting a step-bystep movement to the carrier, a series of linger-keys, one for each registering device, and operative connections between said keys and the actuating mechanism for imparting different throw to the latter, substantially as described.
7. An adding-machine comprising a carrier rotatably mounted, aseries of interconnecting registering devices on said carrier arranged concentrically with its axis, and each provided with a ratchet-wheel, a ratchet-bar mounted to reciprocate, means for imparting a step-bystep movement to the carrier for bringing the ratchet-wheels successively in line with the ratchet-bar, and operative means in connection with the ratchet-bar for imparting diiferent throw to the latter, substantially as described.
8. In a combined type-writing and adding machine, the combination of a motor-impelled carrier rotatably mounted, a series of interconnecting registering devices on said carrier arranged concentrically with its axis, an actuating mechanism adapted to engage with and operate the individual registering devices, means for imparting a step-by-step movement to said carrier for presenting the registering` devices successively to the actuating mechanism, an operative connection between said mechanism and the numeral linger-keys giving dierent throw to the actuating mechanism, and an operative connection between said keys and the types, substantially as described.

An adding-machine comprising a carrier rotatablymounted, a series ot' interconnecting registering devices on said carrier arranged concentrically with its axis, and each provided with a ratchet-wheel, a swinging ratchet-bar mounted to reciprocate, means for imparting a step-by-step movement to the carrier for bringing the ratchet-wheels successively in line with the ratchet-bar, a stop for arresting' the motion of the carrier when the units ratchet-wheel is in line with the ratchet-bar, and operative means in connection with the ratchet-bar for imparting different throw to the latter, substantially as described.

In acombined type-writing and adding machine, the combination of a motor-impelled carrier rotatably mounted, a series or' interconnecting registering devices on said carrier arranged concentrically with its axis, an actuating mechanism adapted to engage with and operate the individual registering devices, means for imparting a step-by-step movement to said carrier for presenting the registering devices successively to the actuating' mechanism, an operative connection between `said mechanism and the numeral linger-keys giving different throw to the actuating mechanism, an operative connection between said keys and the types, and vmeans for throwing the actuating mechanism out of action, substantially as described.
