SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 749,102, dated January 5, 1904.

To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. RUssELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Charleston, in the county of York and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oar-Brakes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention provides a novel system of brakes for street-railway cars which will enable the same to be operated by the traction of the car-wheels upon the application of a comparatively small amount of force by the motorman sufficient to throw the actuating mechanism into operation.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and drawings hereto attached.
While the essential and characteristic features of the invention are susceptible of modification, still the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view of apairof trucks for railway-cars equipped with brake apparatus embodying the'invention. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective View of the actuating-wheel and strap cooperating therewith provided with spaced dogs or lugs. Fig. 3 is a detail vertical section of the parts shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4. is a transverse section of same. Fig. 5 is a detail section of the strap extending through a dog or lug, showing the structural arrangement.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
In the drawings a pair of trucks are shown, each consisting of two axles 1 and 2 and carwheels 3 at the ends of'the axles. Cooperating with the trucks are brake-beams 4 and 5, provided at their ends with brake-shoes to bear against the treads of the respective carwheels. An equalizing-lever 6 is located intermediate of the brake-beams and car-axles and is connected to brake-beam 4 by rod 7 and to brake-beam 5 by rod 8. Upon operating equalizing lever 6, so as to set the brakes, beams 4 and 5 are drawn together to press the brake-shoes against the car-wheels. Power is applied to equalizing-lever 6 from operating-lever 9 by means of connection 10 and actuating means cooperating with a caraxle. The actuating means constitutethe salient feature of the invention and comprise grooved wheel 11, strap 12, and dogs or lugs 13, the latter being of V or wedge form corresponding to the shape of V-groove 14, formedin the periphery of wheel 11. Grooved wheel 11 is of a maximum diameter corresponding to the available space, as the best results are attained by providing a wheel 11 of a large diameter. The groove 13 in the periphery of wheel 11 is of approximately V form in order to secure the advantages of a wedging action between the sides of the groove and the sides of the V dogs or lugs 13, cooperating therewith. Wheel 11 is firmly and rigidly attached to one of the car-axles, as 2, and the strap or band 12 passes therearound, one end of said band or strap being attached to operating-lever 9 and the other end being connected to alever or staff 15 within convenient reach, so as to be operated by the motorman either by hand or foot. Strap or band 12 passes around guide-pulley 16, thereby enabling its front end being connected to leveror staff 15 upon the platform within easy reach, so as to be at all times under control of the motorman. Strap 12 may be of any material best adapted for the purpose, such as metal or leather or a combination of materials. The dogs or lugs 13 are spaced apart and are riveted or otherwise firmly attached to strap 12 in any substantial way. In the preferable construction dogs 13 are laminated, being composed of a series of layers or plies of sheet material, such as leather, which are fastened together and to the strap by the same securing means.
In the operation of the invention the strap or band 12 fits loosely within groove 14 of actuating-wheel 11, so as to permit free rotationof the latter. In the event of it being required to set the brakes the lover or staff 15 is operated to create a tension on strap or band 12 sufficient to cause dogs or lugs 13 to bind in groove 14., whereby said strap is tightened by the rotation of actuating-wheel 11 and pulling upon operating-lever 9 and equalizing-lever 6 applies the brakes in the mannor hereinbefore stated. The construction is such that an expenditure of a small amount of force by the motorman will result in setting the brakes to such an extent as to prevent rotation of the car-wheels to cause them to slide upon the rails and bring the car to a quick stop.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. In a system of car brakes, actuating means therefor comprising a power-driven wheel having an approximately V-shaped groove and a flexible band provided with dogs of approximately V form to match the V- groove of the actuating-wheel, substantially as set forth.
2. In a system of carbrakes, actuating means therefor comprising a power-driven wheel having an approximately V-shaped groove and a flexible band, dogs applied to said strap at intervals in its length and comprisingalaminated structure,thelayers being seen red together and to the strap by the same fastening means, substantially as specified.
3. In a system of car-brakes, an actuatingwheel applied to an axle to rotate therewith and provided in its periphery with an approximately V-shaped groove, and a flexible band for transmitting power to the brakes and provided at intervals in its length with a series of V-shaped dogs for cooperation with the V-shaped groove of the actuating-wheel, substantially as described.
4. In a system of car-brakes, and in combination with the car-axles,car-whcels, brakebeams provided with brake-shoes to bear against the car-wheels and an equalizing-lever connected to said brake-beams, an actuatingwheel secured to an axle for rotation therewith and provided in its periphery with an approximately V- shaped groove, a flexible band connected at one end to said equalizinglever and provided with a series of spaced dogs adapted to cooperate with the V-shaped groove of the actuating-wheel, and means under control of the motorman for tightening said band to cause the dogs thereof to initially bind in the groove of the actuatingwheel preliminary to setting the brakes, substantially as described.
