Beit known that I, PHILiP FRANCIS ODDIE,
civil engineer, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland,residing at Oschersleben, near Magdeburg, in the German Empire,have made new and useful Improvements in Du# plex Pumps, of which the following is the truespeciication. q
This invention vrelates to duplex pumps, and more particularly to a new valve-gear for steam-cylinders of the saine, the chief object being to provide such an arrangement that not only are the steam-inlet ports of the same length, but also that a double curvature of the same is avoided for the purpose of facilitating the casting of such steamcylinders and the cleaning of the ports.
In many constructions of steam-cylinders the slide-faces are placed in the center between the two cylinders, and owing to this position of the slide-faces the steam-inlet port cross each other, which not only complic tes the casting, but also makes the steamports unequally long. y

These blocks share in the reciprocating movement of the pistons, to which they are connected by means of valve-rods la and arms h, which arms are attached to the piston-rods. By reason of the arrangement of the slide-faces immediately over the center of each cylinder the ports are not only of the same length, but also lead to the ends of the cylinder without double curvature. The main valves l l are provided, respectively, with laterally-projecting arms mv m and ym' m', which \overlap in the center, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5. The ends' of. the arms m' m' are connected by the guide-piece n, and the ends of the arms fm rmJ are connected by the guide-piece 'n'. These guide-pieces engage in the oblique slots f f of the guide-blocks le e', so that when one piston and its guide-block are moving the driving of the corresponding valve is necessarily eiected laterally relatively to the di rection ofthe movement of the piston. The outer ends of the valves are made heavy,so as to balance the weightof the projecting arms and guide-pieces. The valve l is provided with passages s and u and a long slot t, and the valve L' is similarly provided with passages s and u. and a long slot t. Projecting upwardly from the guide-piece n is a projection p, having a circular slot in its upper end for the purpose of guiding the rod 3, on which one of the expansion-valves is mounted. This rod 3 is provided with two ears or nuts 4 4, located one on each side of thel projection p. Each of the rods 3 carries two blocks 5 and 6,which are screw-threaded on said rod, these screw-threads being right and left handed, respectively, so that the turning of said rod will cause ,the parts 5 land 6 to move backward and forward. The parts 5 and 6 are prevented from movement by reason of their shape, as shown in Fig. 2, being provided with corners engaging a recess 7 in the valve Z.. The expansion-valve over the valve l' is similar in construction and needs no further description. The rod 3, which carries one of the expansion-valves, has its outer end squared, as shown at 8 in the right-hand portion of Fig. 3. rlhis squared portion engages in a square socket 9 of a casing 10, to which is attached the hand- IOO .wheel 11 for moving the same. By turning the hand-Wheel l1 it is obvious that the expansion-valve will be moved backward or forward on the main valve, thus opening or closing the passages inthe corresponding main valve to a greater or less extent.
In operation the steam is admitted through the port q, passes into the valve-chest through the openings in the main valves and then through the inlet-ports into the cylinders, then out through the outlet-ports in the valve-seats and passagesi n the valves,and escapes through the port fr.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of this said invention and in what manner the same4 is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is- A l. A pump comprising a cylinder, avalvechest over said cylinder, a main valve mounted in said valve-chest and adapted toslide upon its seat transversely across said cylinder, an adjustable expansion-valve mounted above said main valve, and means for imparting` to said valvesa movement transverse to said cylinder.
2. A pump comprising a cylinder, a valvechest over said cylinder, a main valve mounted in said valve-chest, a valve-seat disposed transversely across said cylinder over which said main valve moves, a set of admission and exhaust ports in said valve-seat, the admission-ports'being oppositely disposed in relation to the e'lhaust-ports and leading in a direct course to the cylinder below,-an adjustable expansion-valve located above the main valve, and means for moving said valves across said valve-seat.
3. A duplex pump comprising parallel cyl,- inders, a valve-chest located above said cylinders, main valves within said adapted to move across the valve-seats transversely of said cylinders, admission-ports of equal length leading from said valve-seats to said cylinders, exhaust-ports located directly opposite to said admission-ports, inlet and outlet passages in said valves and adinstable expansion-valves located above said main valves, and means for actuating all of said valves.
4. A duplex pump comprising the cylinders, valve-chests upon said cylinders, valveseats located centrally above said cylinders, valve-seats in said valve-chests, admission and exhaust ports arranged alternately and opposite one another, the admission ports leading from said valve-seats directly to the cylinder, main valves adapted to move over said valve-seats transversely to the cylinder, admission-ports formed in said main valves adapted to register with the admission-ports in said valve -seat`s, an expansion valve mounted upon said main valve and adapted to control said admission-ports, an exhaustpassage in each of said main valves, adapted to connect the admission and exhaust ports at intervals, and means for actuating said valves.

A duplex pump comprising thel cylinders, valve-chests upon said cylinders, Valveseats located centrally above said cylinders, valve-seats in said valve-chests, admission and exhaust ports arranged alternately and opposite one another,the admission-ports leading from said valve-seats directly to the cylinder, main valves adapted to move over said valve-seats transversely to the cylinders, admission-ports formed in said main valves adapted to register with the admission-ports in said valve seats, an expansion valve mounted upon said main valve and adaptedl to control said admission-ports, an exhaustpassage in each of said main valves, adapted to connect the admission and exhaust ports at intervals, laterally-'extendingarms carried by said main valves, Valve-stems carried by said expansion-valves, and means connected to said arms and said valve-stems for imparting motion to said valves.
7. A duplex pump comprising the cylinders, valve-chests upon said cylinders, valveseats located centrally above said cylinders, valve-seats in said valve-chests, admission and exhaust ports arranged alternately and opposite one another, the admission-ports leading from said valve-seats directly to the cylinder, main valves adapted to move over said valve-seats transversely to the cylinders, admission-ports formed in said main valves adapted to register with the admission-ports in said valve seats, an expansion valve mounted upon said main valve and adapted to control said admission-ports, an exhaustpassage in each of said main valves, adapted to connect the admission, and exhaust ports at intervals, laterally-extending arms carried by said main valves, valve-stems carried by said expansion-valves, guide-blocks provided with inclined grooves in which rest projections upon said arms, and means for imparting a reciprocatory motion to said blocks.
