SWITCH-OPERATING DEVICE.

To all whorm it may concern.- I
Be it known that I, JOHN T. CARMODY, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Lincoln, in the county of Logan and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Switch- Operating Device, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an of switch-operating device by means of which aswitch can be operated from the locomotivecab; and the invention consists, essentially, in arranging a series of levers in connection with the switch-points and in providing means carried by the locomotive and operated from the engine-cab for throwing the lever mechanism into operation.
The invention consists also incertain details of construction and novelties of combination, all of which will be fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming part of this specitical application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a track, showing the main and switch rails, together with the lever mechanisni connected to the switch-points. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the tripper-arm carried by the locomotive and operated from the cab. Fig. 4 is a detail view showing the difierent positions of the tripper-arm, and Figs. 5 and 6 show details of construction.

which bar is connected to the ordinary construction of switch-stand D. An elbow-lever E is pivoted in a bracket F, secured to one of the cross-ties, the forward arm of said elbowlever having an elongated slot E produced therein, through which a pin E 'passes for the purpose of connecting the bar 0 to theelbow-lever. The opposite end of the lever is pivotally connected to a rod G, arranged in guides G, said rod.being pivot-ally con nected to a link I, pivoted in the bracket I, arranged upon one of the cross-ties. The rod G may be of any desired length, and in practice I prefer to place it as far in advance of the switch as possible in order that the switch may he closed by the locomotive while moving at a high rate of speed. is adapted to be engaged by a horizontal arm K, carried at the lower end of a shaft L,which shaft is journaled in suitable bearings M and N, rigidly connected to the locomotive, the bearing M being connected to the locomotive in advance of the cylinder and adjacent the pilot, While the bearing N is arranged upon the side of the boiler adjacent the forward end. The arm K is of such length that when thrown outwardly, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. t, it will engage the upright lever I, and the forward movement of the locomotive while the arm is in this position will force the lever I downwardly and forwardly, operating the switch-points, so as to close or open the switch, thereby directing the locomotive to the main track and preventing an accident. As before stated, the arm K is carried upon the lower end'of the shaft L, which is journaled in the bearings M and N, and the upper end of the shaft is provided with a crank-arm O, which is connected to an operating-.rod'P, extending into the locomotivecab and carrying projections P, which are adapted to engage the plate or bar arranged at the bottom of the cab-window for the purpose of holding the rod in either of its adj usted positions. By means of the rod P the arm K can be thrown in or out, as occasion may require.
By reference to Fig. 3 it will be noted that the casting M is formed with a groove M in the upper face thereof, in which fits the rigid portion of the locomotive, and the lower face is rabbeted, as shown at M so that the arm K can fold snugly thereunder. The central portion of the casting is enlarged or reinforced, as shown at M in order to give sufficient strengthto stand the strain during the If desired, the rod G may be jointed at G2 adjacent its connection with the elbow-lever E. It will thus be seen that I provide a. simple and durable construction'of switch-operating device by means of which an open switch can be closed by an approaching train, thereby enabling the train to pass swiftly on and safely close the switch before reaching the same.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a device of the kind described the combination with the operating-rod,of ashaft, a crank-arm secured to the upper end of the shaft, a tripping-arm secured to the lower end of the said shaft, the bearings through which said shaft passes, an upright lever mounted in a guide adjacent the track, the elbow-lever having one arm slotted, the rod connecting the elbow-lever and upright lever, and switch-points carrying a rod having a pin mounted thereon, said pin working in the slot of the elbow-lever, as specified.
2. In a device of the kind described comprising two spaced bearings adapted to be arranged upon a locomotive, one above the other, the lower bearing having its under face rabbeted, a vertical shaft mounted in said bearing and provided at its upper end with a crank-arm, and at its lower end with tripping-arms adapted to lie within the rabbet of the lower bearing when in an inoperative position, and an operating-rod connected with the crank-arm of the said shaft.
3. The combination with the operating-rod, of the shaft journaled upon the locomotive, the crank-arm connected to the upper end of the shaft, and the tripper-arm arranged upon the lower end of said shaft, an upright lever pivoted adjacent the track, the link and rod connected to said lever, the elbow lever, switch-points and bar connecting the switch points and elbow-lever,substan tially as specified.
4:. In a device of the kind described, the combination with the operating-rod, of the shaft having the crank-arm at the upper end, and the tripping-arm at the lower end, the bearing N, through which the upper end of the shaft passes, and the bearing M, through which the lower end of the shaft passes, said bearing M, having a grooved upper face, a rabbeted lower face, and the reinforced central portion, and the upright lever adapted to be engaged by the tripping-arm, together with connections between the upright lever,
