To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JAMES R. BARRY, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tops, of which the following, taken in connection with the ac companying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to improvements in tops, and refers particularly to that class which is adapted to be spun by a cord.

The primary object is to prevent the slipping or displacement of the cord during the operation of winding and to permit the cord to readily detach from the top when unwound in the act of spinning.

Further objects will appear in the subsequent description.

This recess is preferably circular, and its inner end is reduced in diameter to form an annular horizontal shoulder or seat 5, which serves to limit the inward movement of the plug, while the vertical side walls of the outer or larger end of the recess serve to prevent lateral displacement of said plug. The plug is formed with a central aperture, through which the cord 2 is inserted, the innor end of said cord being tied into a knot 6, which projects into the reduced inner end of the recess, so as not to interfere with the insertion of the plug and whereby the plug is detached from the top when the cordisunwound in the act of spinning said top. It is thus seen that the top and operating-cord are formed with interlocking shoulders, whereby one end of the cord is held while the remain ingportion is wound in the usual manner around the periphery of the top preparatory to spinning the same, the attachment of said end serving to prevent slipping of the cord while being wound upon the top.

In spinning the top it is thrown or tossed in the usual manner to unwind the cord therefrom, and .as soon as this unwinding is effected the sudden termination operates to draw the plug from its seat, and the top therefore continues to spin unimpeded, and the plug is held upon the string or cord by the knot 6, to be again inserted in the recess 3 to repeat the operation.

The peg or spur upon which the top rests when spinning is here shown as consisting of a ring or eye 7, which is disposed vertically to form a curved bearing-face and is formed with a stud 8, projecting into an opening in the lower or apex of the top and secured thereto.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A top having a recessed upper face, said recess being enlarged at the upper portion thereof to form a shoulder, a plug, said enlarged portion of the recess being of the same height as the thickness of said plug, a cord attached to the plug with a knot formed on the cord to extend in said recess.
