SEEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 747,169, dated December 15, 1903.
Application filed July 17, 1903. Serial No. 165.971. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR B. HALLOCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at O0- lumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Gloves, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the improvement of glove construction; and the objects of my invention are to provide, in connection with the manufacture of gloves where an outseam is employed, improved means for covering or shielding the seams on the palm side of the glove and at the same time increase the efficiency and durability of the seams. These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which-- Figure l is a view of the palm side of a glove having my improved construction. Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse section of one of the glove-fingers; and Fig. 3 is a detail view, in perspective, of a portion of the seam side of the glove, showing the seam-covering strip broken and partly turned back for the sake of clearness in illustration.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
As in the ordinary outseam construction the uniting of the finger edges 1 and 1 of the fingers 1 and the uniting of the edges 1 and 1 on the seam side of the glove-body 2 is accomplished by stitching such edges together and permitting the lip or extreme edge portions to project outward. As is well known, the exposure of the stitches on the palm side of the glove is undesirable, inasmuch as the thread is necessarily subjected to more or less wear. In order to avoid this difficulty and at the same time impart to the palm side of the glove a neat and finished appearance, I construct my improved glove as follows: The edges of the glove-body and fingers to be united are brought together in the usual manner, so that they lie one upon the other, and upon the edge lip on the palm side is placed a strip of leather or other material 3. This strip when doubled lengthwise is equal'in width to the width of the projecting edge portions of the glove body or fingers, and in arranging the strip, the outer edge thereof is brought flush with the edges of the body or fingers, as shown more clearly in Fig. 3. This being accomp1ished,the edge portions of the glove or finger are, as indicated at 4., stitched to the strip 3, the seam thus formed passing through the center of the width of said strip. Owing to the formation of this scam through the center of the strip 3, it is obvious that the inner half of said strip, or that half which is not resting upon the united glove edges, will tend to fold downward over the remaining half. However, to insure a connection of the two halves of the strip 3 I preferably unite the same with a suitable cement. From this operation it will be seen that an outseam glove is produced in which the stitching which unites the pattern to connect the side of the glove, the thumb, and fingers is completely covered and the thread shielded from wear.
I am aware that it is common to produce what is known as the inseam glove by turning in the edges to be united and by sewing between the same awelt strip, thus avoiding the formation of an exposed seam. This well-known construction, however, is objectionable in that the inturned seam portion necessarilycontacts with the hand and fingers when the glove is worn. By my construction, however, it will be understood that the inside of the glove is free from seam obstruction and that the seam on the palm side of the glove, where the greater wear occurs, is completely covered. It will also be observed that the construction which I have described imparts to the glove a neat and attractive appearance.
, Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a glove construction, the combination with the glove-body, of a strip arranged on the palm side of the glove upon the edges of the latter to be united, said strip being sewed through the center of its width in connection with said glove edges, the upper half of said strip being folded upon and cemented to the lower half thereof, substantially as specified.
