Description

No. 746,978. 1 PATENTED DEG. 15, I903.
I .0. P. MOHR.
COMBINED STEP LADDER AND BENCH.
UNITED STATES Patented December 15, 1903.
CHARLES P. MOHR, OF FREEDOM, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINED STEP-LADDER AND BENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 746,978, dated December 15, 1903. Application filed September 17, 1903. Serial No. 173,616. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES P. MOHR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Freedom, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and use: ful Improvement in a Combined Step-Ladder and Bench, of which improvement the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in combined step-ladders and benches, and has for its object the provision of novel means whereby the device may be easily converted from a step-ladder to a bench, or vice versa.
My present invention contemplates to provide a device of the above-described class that will be extremely simple in construction, strong, durable, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and highly efficient in its use.
With the above and other objects in View the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claim. 7
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved device, showing the same set up as a step-ladder. Fig. 2-is-a similar view showing the same converted into a bench. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of a part of the bench, showing locked position of one of the yokes in full lines and its unlocked position in dotted lines. Fig. 4: is a vertical sectional View, partly broken away, showing the connecting straps or links in side elevation; Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view of a part of the device in the step-ladder form.
In the drawings the reference-numerals 1 indicate the side bars of the ladder, in which are secured the steps 2, and in said sides are formed slots 3 3. The rear support 4 of the ladder forms the top of the bench and has connected thereto straps 5, which are pivotally secured at their outer ends to the sides 1 and part 4: and at their inner ends are pivoted together, as shown at 6. A support 7, which is suspended from arms 8, extending through openings 9, in which the same. are pivotally secured, maybe operated to extend over the rear of the ladder, as shown in Fig. 1, or may be swung downward, as shown in Fig. 2. The legs or supports 10 of the bench are pivotally secured at 11 and are of the same width as the side bars 1 and when the device is converted into a ladder will occupy the position as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings and remain in this position by means of yokes 12 operating through guides 14, the ends 15 of said yokes serving to engage the edges of the side bars of the ladder and the sides of the legs or supports, and when the latter is converted into a bench, as shown in Fig. 20f the drawings, these ends 15 are adapted to engage in the slots 3, forming asubstantial support for the bench. In one leg I provide dowel-pin 16 and form an opening 17 in the bench for its reception.
The operation of the device is as follows: We will assume the device is in position, as shown in Fig. '1, and in order to convert the same into a bench the section 4 is folded against the side bars 1 and steps 2, the support '7 is swung downwardly, as shown in Fig. 2, and the legs or supports by first releasing the ends of the yokes from engagement will be permitted to swing around and'securely fasten in position by means of the yokes engaging in the slots 3, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. 1 When used as a bench, the pin 16 serves to hold the top steady.
The many advantages obtained by the use of my improved device will be readily apparent from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of m invention. a V
Having fully describedmy invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isr In a device of the type set forth, the combinationwith the side bars and the steps carried thereby, of a rear support having a movable connection with the said side bars, legs pivotally secured at their one end adjacent to the ends of the side bars, yokes mounted on the said legs, the ends of the yokes being bent inwardly and adapted to engage the side bars when in one position, the said ends of the yok es when the legs are in their extended position adapted to enter slots provided therefor in saidside bars, substantially as de- 10 scribed.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two silbscribing witnesses.
OHARLES P. MOHR.
In presence of GEORGE A. BALDWIN, JEssE S. BARNES.
