PATENT FFIGE.
ADOLF TELLSCHOW, OF BERLIN, GERMANY.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 746,898, dated December 15, 1903. Applicationfiled October 20, 1903. Serial No. 177,802. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADOLF TELLSCHOW, engineer, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at 27 Griinauerstrasse, Berlin, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Folding-Flaps for Envelop-Machines, Paper-Bag Machines, or the Like; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. I
This invention relates to a construction of folding-flap for use in machines for making envelops, paper-bags, pasteboard boxes, and
the like whereby one and the same foldingflap is rendered available for envelops, bags, &c., of different sizes. Folding-flaps have already been constructed for this purpose in which the flap-surface consisted of two outer parts that could be brought nearer together or farther apart, so that between them e'xisted a greater or smaller empty space that was filled in by the insertion of a corresponding middle piece,wl1ich together with the side pieces constituted the pressure-surface of the flap. This construction not only requires that the manufacturer shall have a whole series of suitable pieces of different sizes, corresponding to the different sizes of envelope, &c., to be made, but also the insertion and removal of the said pieces and the accurate adjustment'of the side pieces causes a considerable expenditure of time and labor, and any inaccuracy in the adjustment causes faulty folding in the envelops, (be.
The present invention has for its object to greatly simplify and accelerate the adjusting operation of such machines, inasmuch as all changing of removable middle pieces and the attendant operations are entirely done away with. I
Thefoldiug-flap accordingtothepresentinvention is also of the kind in which the folding-surface is composed of several parts, and two parts of this surface, which for the smallest size of envelops lie close together, so as to constitute the entire folding-surface, are
arranged to be shiftable upon a base-piece parallel to the edge to be folded, and on the protrusion of a wedge-shaped middle piece shiftably arranged on the base in a direction at right angles to the motion of the side pieces the latter are pushed aside, sothat the emptyspace formed between them is occupied by the said middle piece, whereupon this,
together with the two outwardly-shifted side pieces, constitutes the folding-surface, the folding edge being thus made continuous.
On the accompanying drawings is shown a construction of folding-flap according to the above-described invention.
Figure 1 shows a plan view; Fig. 2, a front view, and Figs. 3 and 4 side views'with the folding-flap respectively in the turned-down position and in the raised position.
As shown in Fig. 1, the flap has a back piece or base a, of a T-shaped form, having eyeshaped pieces 2; on the under side, which constitute the pivot of the folding-flap and are fitted on short journals 0, Figs. 3 and 4, carried in lugs d on the framing e of the machine. The flap-base can therefore be turned through ninety degrees upon the journals, as shown at Fig. 4, and to it are adjustably attached the parts g that constitute the above-mentioned two side-folding surfaces of the flap.
As shown at Fig. 1, the base a has two slots ff, in which the two flap-pieces g g, of approximately triangular shape, can slide and in which they are secured, when adj usted in position, by means of setting-screws h'h. At the that serve for the attachment to it of a bracket m, having a threaded eyewith which is engaged a screw-spindle rotatably mounted in an eye it on the base a. By the rotation of the screw-spindle the bracket m, together with the middle piece it, is slid forward or backward in the slots 1'. In Fig. 1 the middle piece It is shown in about the middle position of its entire motion and its point has consequently pushed the two side pieces 9 to a corresponding extent outward, so that in this position of the parts an envelop can be folded the length of whose side is equal to the distance between the short outer edges of the parts g. If the wedge-piece k be completely drawn back, so that its apex has the dotted position shown in Fig. 1, and if the parts g be then pushed close together and fixed by their setting-screws, they alone form.
the folding-surface of the flap. In order to insure that the wedge-piece It shall at once force the pieces 9 to an equal extent apart on coming in contact therewith, the two rear edges of the latter are beveled off, so as when pushed close together to form an agular recess into which the point of the piece It projects. The position of the three parts g g and is (shown in dotted and hatched lines at Fig. 1) shows the extreme outward positions thereof.
The flap is actuated in the known manner. At Fig. 4 is shown in dotted lines a short lever for this purpose that may receive its motion from an eccentric or the like.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my saidinvention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is- 1. A folding-flap for machines for making envelops, paper bags, pasteboard boxes and the like, consisting of a base-piece pivotally connected to the folding-frame of the machine, two folding side pieces movably connected with said base-piece, a wedge-shaped middle piece connected with the base-piece so as to be moved in a direction at right angles to the motion of the side pieces and to push them aside and means for effecting the folding movement of the base-piece, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
2. A folding-flap for machines for making envelops, paper bags, pasteboard boxes and the like, consisting of a base-piece pivotally connected to the folding-frame of the machine and provided with slots, two folding side pieces engaging the said slots with projecting parts, a wedge-shaped middle piece connected with the base-piece so as to be moved in a direction at right angles to the motion of the side pieces and to push them aside and means for effecting the folding movement of the basepiece, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
3. A folding-flap for machines for making envelops, paper bags, pasteboard boxes and the like, consisting of a base-piece pivotally connected to the folding-frame of the machine and provided with slots and with other slots arranged in a direction of a right angle to the first-mentioned slots, two folding side pieces engaging them with projecting parts, a wedge-shaped middle piece engaging the other slots of the base-piece with projecting parts so as to be moved in a direction at right angles to the motion of the side pieces and to push'them aside and means for effecting the folding movement of the base-piece, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
