PATENT OFFICE. A
WIRE :vlnr-races.l
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 746,857,6.ated December 1 5, 1903.
Application led February 11, 1903. Serial No. 142,967. (No model.)
To al?, whom t may concern,.-
Be it known that I, MICHAEL R. MANGAN, a' citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire Mattresses,
of which the following is a description.
My invention belongs to that class of Inattresses in which the wire is formed into a web which is resiliently supported in the main frame of the mattress.
The object of my invention is to produce a simple, effective, and economical device of the kind described; and to this end it consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts herein shown and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In' the drawings wherein like reference characters indicate like or corresponding parts, Figure lis a. plan view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of one of the parts going to make up my mattress. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the same. view of a section of a mattress, showing the method of constructing the same. Fig 5 is a plan view of one of the outside members going to make up the mattress-web, and Fig. 6 is an edge View of the same.
In the drawings, l l represent the side bars, and 2 2 the end bars, going to make up a mat- 'cross-frame.
3 3are coiled springs or equivalent members secured to the end bars 2 2, to which the web of the mattress is secured, giving resiliency thereto. The web of the mattress is made up of a plurality of V-shaped members 4, consisting of two arms extending at an angle from each other and connected by a loop or eye 5. The free ends of the two arms terminate in downwardly-projected hooks 6, for a purpose hereinafter described. The side members of the web are composed of members 7, each provided with a long arm S, which when connected'with a similar member will extend in a straight line to form the outer edge or border of the mattress, and a shorter arm 9, extending at an angle from the main arm 8. The two arms are joined by an eye or loop 10, as are the main members4 of the web, by eyes 5. The free ends of the arms 8 and 9 Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail are also provided with downwardly-projected hooks 1112, for a purpose to he described.
The method of assembling the parts may be briefiy described as follows: Commencing liat the top of Fig. 1 the eyes or loops 5 and .10 are each suitably engaged With'one of the springs 3, the arms of the members extending therefrom. The next row of members is then placed in position by engaging the hooks l2 of the arms 9 in the eyes 5 of'one of the mem bers^4 and also the hook 6 of the adjacent member 4 within the same eye, so arranging the series across the mattress to form the on the proximate arms 4 are engaged with'an eye or equivalent member formed on the springs 3 at that end of the mattress, completing the web and binding the whole firmly together.l When thus formed, the whole constitutes a simple, eective, and very economically-constructed wire mattress adapted for all the usual purposes for which such articles are generally employed.
It will be noted that when assembled the extending arms of the parts 4 extend in the same general direction-that is to say, tley form a substantially straight line extending diagonally across the mattress and adding greatly to the strength thereof. It will also be noticed that the short arms 9 of the part 7, arranged on the sides of the mattress, are the initial members from the side to form the diagonal lines referred to. This adds great strength to the device, prevents sagging from use, and greatly increases its durability.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a device of the kind described, a mattress-frame comprising side and end barssuit1 ably connected, in combination with a web composed of V-shaped members 4 each pro- IOO vided with eyes 5, and side members 7 provided with an eye 10, Vthe extending arms of the two adjacent V-shaped members being connected to one of said eyes 5, the whole constituting a complete web, and means for resiliently connecti-ng the web to the ends of the frame, substantially as described.
2. In a Wire mattress, the side and end bars suitably connected, in combination with a web composed of V-shaped members 4 provided with eyes 5, and side members 7 pro-Nv vided with eyes 10, the adjacent arms of the side members being engaged With one of the eyes 5, as set forth, the angle of the arms of the V-shaped members being such that when the web is completed the arms will extend diagonally across the mattress in substantially a straight line, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the kind described, the side member-7 provided with an arm 8 andashorter arm 9 connected by an eye 10, the free ends arms 6 With one of the eyes 5 in making up the mattress said arms will extend diagonally across the mattress in substantially a straight line, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MICHAEL R. MANGAN.
