FOLDING SEAT FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 746,763, dated December 15, 1903. Application filed April 9, 1903. Serial No. 151,887. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPHINE VAN BLAH- CUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Puerto Cortes, in the Republic of Hon: duras, have invented a new and useful Folding Seat for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an attachment for pedal-operated machines, such as sewing-machines, and more particularly to a folding seat therefor, and has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient device of this character, which may be quickly attached to theordinary sewing-machine and which may be adjusted vertically to any desired height to accommodate the operator.
A further object of the invention is to provide a seat attachment, the relativedisposition of the several parts being such as to per mit the same being compactly folded beneath the table of the sewing-machine when not in use.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement'of parts hereinafterfully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a sewing-machine, showing a folding seat constructed in accordance with my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same, showing the seat folded beneath the sewing-machine table; and Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of the frame, treadle, and bearing-pin.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding partsin all the figures of the drawlugs.
l designates a sewing-machine of the ordinary form and construction, and 2 my improved folding-seat attachment.
The folding seat 2 consistsof a 'standardor pedestal 3, having outwardly-extending legs or feet 4, the upper end of the pedestal being threaded, as shownat 5, and adapted to so gage the interior threads of a collar 6, se-
cured in any suitable manner, as by screws or like fastening devices, to a seat 7 and by means of which said seat may be adjusted vertically to any desiredheight to accommodate the operator. Pivoted to the oppositelydisposed laterally-extending legs or feet 4 of the pedestal 3 by means of bolts or screws 8 are a pair of rods or lovers 9, which extend upwardly and rearwardly, being pivoted to the side bars 10 of the sewing-machine frame by means of threaded pins 11, which pass through ends of the rods or levers and the side bars 10. The ends of the screws are pointed or cone-shaped, as shown at 11, and fit in correspondingly-shaped bearing-openings 1-2 in the sides of the treadle 12, forming the pivotal point upon which said treadle oscillates when the machine is operated. Clamping-nuts 13, interposed between the side bars l0 and the levers 9, engage the threaded section of'the screws 8, and by means of which said screws may be adjusted laterally and the levers 9 secured in the desired position with relation to the frame. The rods or levers9 are each formed of two members hinged, as shown, at 14, which permitssaid levers to ;-be forced upwardly and the seat compactly folded beneath the stand of the machine when not in use, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
From the foregoing description the opera tion of my device will be readily understood, and isas follows: The parts being in the position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings when it is desired to use the attachment, the operator grasps the seat and pulls outwardly and downwardly thereon until the seat assumes a position slightly in advance of the sewing-machine, when the lovers 9 will be extended to their full limit and further outward movement of the seat prevented. The seat may now be adjusted vertically to any desired height to accommodate the operator by revolving the seat on the threaded end of the pedestal. When not in use, the seatmay be compactly folded beneath the table or stand of the machine by exerting a slight upward pressure on the rods or levers 9, which causes said levers to be forced upwardly-and permits the seat to be folded within the lines of the frame, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patbeing provided with an intermediate hinged ent, is connection to permit the levers being swung An attachment for sewing-machines, comupwardly and the seat folded within the lines 2 prising a stool or seat, a pair of approxiof the frame. :5 mately horizontal levers one end of each of In testimony that I claim-the foregoing as which is pivoted to the seat at a point near my own I have hereto affixed my signaturein the floor-level and the opposite end thereof the presence of twowitnesses.
