PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREWT J. SEYMOUR, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK. y
PLAYING-CARDS.
SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 746,750, dated December 1 5, 1903- Application filed November 26, 1900. Serial No. 37,733. (No model To all whom, it muy con/cern:
Beit known that I, ANDREW J. SEYMOUR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful' Improvement in Playing-Cards, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates toacard game which embodies in a fanciful and amusing manner some of the features or characteristics upon which chirognomy or palmistry is based.
The object of my invention is to provide a novel deck of playing-cards which renders card games more interesting and entertain- 1n g.
The accompanying drawing is a face view of a number of my improved cards.
The pack or deck preferably comprises fifty. two cards, although it may contain a different number, if desired. Each card has on its face a picture or representation of a human hand, with the palm uppermost, and this hand has lines, characters, or formations which denote orcorrespond to those of the human hand and fancifully indicate characteristics of human nature and forecasts of destiny. For Aekample, the hands on the cards A, C, D, and H bear lines which are designated Life line, Fate line, Heart line,. and Marriage line, respectively. l The hand on the card I has comparatively long finger-nails (shown by dotted lines) and is designated Long nails. The hand on the card E has al circular spot or disk on one of its mounts, 4
designated Saturn, and the hand on the card G has a curved line, designated Ring of Solomon. In addition to these lines and characters each card bears a brief description of the meaning of its marks or peculiarities, as shown, and also suit and rank designations jj. The latter may be duplicated in diagonally opposite corners of the card and may consist of ordinary sym bols, as hearts, spades, diamonds, and clubs, and the customary rank designations, as ace, king, queenf jack, che., as shown.
With these cards any of the well-known card games, as eu'chre, pedro, whist, doc., may be Vplayed in the same manner as with ordinary cards, the rank and suit of t-he cards being determined by the designations jj. After playing a hand the number of points to which the players are entitled is ascertained by reference to the lines or characteristics of the hands on the trump-cards of the tricks and by comparison of the corresponding lines and formations of the palms of the players. For instance, the player Whose t tricks contain the trump-card highest in rank announces the line or other characteristic of that card, as Heart line. The players then compare that particular characteristic oftheir palms, and the one having the longest or otherwise most favorable line is credited with Vone or more points, as may be determined.
The player` having the trump-card next in rank then announces the line or characteristie of that card, and the players again compare hands to determine who is entitled to the point, and so on with the remaining trump-cards, the player having the greatest number of points winning the game.
If desired, only the suit and rank designations of the cards may be used, as in Aplaying with ordinary cards, or these designations may be ignored and only the hand-lines or characteristics of the cards-employed -for instance, by drawing and matching similar cards to form pairs or books, asin the game Vof Authors or Old Maid.
I claim as my invention- Adeck of playing-cards, each card of which or major portion of said face, the hands upon said cards bearing different lines and marks, and the palms of the hands on said cards having words of admonition or prophecy indited thereupon, and the field of each card,
between the thumb of the hand indited there- .upon and the characters denoting suit and ANDREW J. SEYMOUR.
