Description

UNITED STATES Patented December 15, 1903.v I
PATENT OFFICE.
FERDINAND KREUTER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
EYEGLASSES..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 746,711, dated December 15, 1903.
Application iiled August 3| 1903. Serial No 168.125. (No model.) u i To all whom it .may concern.-
Be it known that I, FERDINAND KREUTER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of NewYork, in the county of New York and State of NewYork, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Eyeglasseaof which the following is a specification.
In the use of eyeglasses wherein the nosespring and nose-guards are secured to the studs or posts of the lens-mounting by screws it is often the case that the studs or posts and the screws touch or press against the sides of the nose, with the result that the posts and screws become rusty from contact with the skin and the skin becomes discolored and irritated from contact with the posts and screws. Especially is this true with fleshy persons. A
The object of my invention is to so construct the glasses as to obviate these difficulties; and to this end my invention consists in combining with the posts, nose-guards, and nose-spring of eyeglasses shields or protections which shall press against the sides of the nose, so as to compress the nose and shield it from contact with the posts and screws.
The invention also consists in the special construction of the parts, all. as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, to which reference is made and which form a part'of this specification, Figure l is a front elevation of a pair of eyeglasses'provided with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same, and Fig'. 3 is a like View showing the facing of the nose-guard shifted to one side.
In the drawings, 2 2 represent the lenses; 3 3, the studs or posts of the mounting; 4, the nose-springand 5 5 the nose-guards. The nose-spring and the nose-guards are secured by screws 6 6 in the heads or boxes 7 7 of the studs or posts, as shown.4 The nose-guards 5 5 are each provided with a facing 8, of shell,
celluloid, hard rubber, or other suitable material. This facing 8 is formed with a main part 9, which covers the main grasping part 10 0f the nose-guard, and with a branch 12, which covers the arm 13 of the nose-guard and extends at its upper end 14 over and in front of the upper end of the guard and in front of the box 7 of the stud or post and over the screw 6, thus'serving, under the pressure of the nose-spring, to press the iiesh of the nose away from the stud or post and away from the screw, so that the skin does not come in contact therewith.
In itting glasses having my improvement to customers the lower end only of the facing will be secured to the metal part of the noseguard by a rivet l5, which allows the guard to be swung to one side, as shown inFig. 3. In this condition the nose-guards are secured to the stud or post by the screws 6, and then the facing is turned to place and secured by a rivet 17, as shown by Fig. 2.
Having thus described-my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In eyeglasses, lens-mountings, studs or posts secured to said lens-mountings, nose` guards secured at their upper ends to said posts or studs, and facings for said noseguards pivoted at their lower ends to said noseguards, their upper ends projecting above and held in front of said studs or posts, substantiaily as described.
2. The combination with the nose-guards having a main gripping-face and an attaching-arm, of a facing composing a main grasping part 9, and a branch l2, the upper end 14, of which covers the screw by which the noseguard is attached to the post of the eyeglasses, substantially as described.
