No. 746.560. PATENTED DEC. 8, 1903.

PATENT OFFICE.
PRESSURE-REGULATOR.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 746,560, dated December 8, 1903.
Application filed February 9,1903. Serial No. 142.540- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SYLVESTER L. MCADAMS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Beaverfalls, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pressure-Regulators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in pressure-regulators, and relates particularly to that type which are adapted to be connected to a main supplyline and are adapted to receive the maximum pressure from said supply-line and reduce said maximum pressure to a minimum amount to be delivered to the line leading to the point of consumption. Devices of this nature are employed in connection with naturalgas mains and are interposed in the tap-line connected to the main supply and leading to the point of consumption; and my invention has for its object the construction of a regulator of this type of extremely simple construction, cheapness in cost of manufacture, and effectiveness in operation; further, to provide for the balancing of the governing-valves and the connecting of the valve-stem with the diaphragm in such a manner as to insure easy and perfect working of the parts. 7
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application, I haveshown a practical embodiment of my invention and in describing thesame in detail will have reference to said drawings, and in the same like numerals of reference will be employed for designating like parts throughout both views, in which Figure 1 is a central vertical sectional view of my improved pressure-regulator. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view thereof, taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
To put my invention into practice, I construct a shell or casing-body 1, provided with an inlet 2 and an outlet 3, these ports being in opposite sides of the body orshell and connecting, respectively, with the supply-main and with the pipe or line leading to the point of consumption.
The shell or body is somewhat tapered, being widest at its upper end and provided with an annular flange 4:, whereby the diausual port 9.
phragm 5 may be secured between said flange and the removable cap or crown-piece 6.
This cap or crown-piece is provided with a dome 7, threaded thereinto to receive the pressure-regulating spring 8 and is preferably made of a length suitable to receive a considerable portion of said spring whereby to insure its. being properly held. This cap or crown-piece 6 is also provided with the ,A hanger 10 is suspended centrally from the diaphragm by a bolt 11, that passes through a disk 12 on the upper face of said diaphragm, the nut which holds this bolt receiving the lower end of the spring 8 and holding said spring at said lower end. In the hanger 10, which has two parallel jaws, is pivotally secured one end of a lever 14:, the other end of which is pivotally held in a clevis 15, which is preferably constructed with a thread ed shank to be engaged in the Wall of the shell. The lever 14 is pivotally connected bya link 16 with the arm 17 of a bell-crank lever, which latter is pivotally supported from a bracket or arm 18, that in practice is generally constructed with a threaded stud or'shank, as shown, for engagement in the shell or casing. The leg or arm 19 of the bell-crank lever works in a slot 20 provided therefor in a valve-stem 21. This valve-stem 21 carries valves 22 and 23 011 its respective ends, which valves are each provided with wings 24c, forming guides which operate in the ports 25 26, which are in line with each other in the partition-wall 27. This partition incloses the inlet-port and extends to a point opposite said outlet-ports, as at 27 In practice the spring 8 is set to the desired pressure, and the gas or other fluid entering through port 2 through port 26 is received in the chamber 28 and passes to the outlet 3.
The pressure in the chamber is against valve 23, whereby to equalize and balance the pressure on the valves, and should the pressure in chamber 28 exceed the pressure given the spring 8 the diaphragm 5 is elevated, and through the medium of lever 14, link 16, and the bell-crank lever the valves are moved toward the closed position whereby to close or partially close the inlet, and as the excess pressure in chamber 28 is relieved the diaphragm is acted upon by the spring whereby to again open the valves to maintain the desired minimum pressure. The valves in practice are preferably constructed with the gaskets or valve-seats, as shown, to insure effective seating thereof.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with the casing formed with inlet and outlet ports, of a partition in- 1 0 closing said inlet-port and extending to a point opposite said outlet-port, said partition being formed with alining openings, a pair of valves provided with wings slidably mounted in the 0 peningsof said partition, a valve-stem arranged exteriorly of said partition connecting said valves, and means arranged in said casing controlled by pressure for actuating said stem.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
