In the practice of my invention I `provide a hollow block or chest A, having a coverD,

attached thereto by means of the screws F,

and between the said forming-block A and its cover D, I interpose a washer or gasket'E.

The front end of the forming-block A is formed with a segmental concave surface, against which the brim of the hat is formed,

and said forming-block is movably mounted upon the bed R of the 'machine and is connected by means of the chain S to the foot- -lever S2, which is conveniently arranged upon the machine. n

To keep'the forming-block rigidly-in its proper position, I provide the guide-rods M and N, which are secured to the bosses J and K, respectively.

Between the abutment T and the formingblockl 4A and engaging around the rods N, I provide spiral springs T2, whose function is to keep the block A normally in operative position.

To afford a means for adjusting the block A, I form a thickened portion'N2 upon the rods N and provide the end of this thickened portion with a handle or hand-nut N3.

Steam is supplied to the block A through the inletB and passes out through the eX- haust-pipe C and the inlet B, and the outlet C may be connected by means of a flexible connection to the source of steam-supply and the exhaust. v l

A roller V is -mounted upon the lower end of the shaft-V2, which'is carried upon the frame T3 and rotated by means of the shaft connected by the gears T5 -I provide a roller W, mounted upon the lower end of `theshaft W2, which is connected by a belt W3 to the shaft T4. The said roller W engages the former U',.secured upon the block U2, and in conjunction with which the said roller gives the brim its preliminary curl.

In order to guide the hat and keep it in its proper relative position, I provide the guide R2, which is adjustably attached to the machine and which may be ofvany approved construction.

Upon the vbottom of the chest I form'the ribs l, which 'engage' in corresponding recesses in the bed of the machine and which are employed to keep the chest in proper alinement. Y y

The ribs I and O are formed inthe cover D to strengthen and reinforce the same, and the IOO concave surface upon the block A is elevated one way and partly cut away in another direction, as indicated at O2, in order to give the proper turn to the brim.

The shaft T4 is driven by any suitable power applied to the pulley T7, and when in operation steam is admitted to the block A through the inletB and exhausts through the outlet C.

The passage of the steam through the block A heats the said block to any desired temperature and enables the operator to curl the brim of the hat by passing it between the said concave surface of the block A and the roller W.

To remove the hat after the brim has been formed, the foot-lever S2 is depressed, thereby withdrawing back the block A and allowing the hat to be removed.

This device is simple in construction and is perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and various changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made without departing from the spirit of myinvention or sacriiicing its advantages.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. In a machine for curling hat-brims pro vided with a forming-roller, a hollow forming block movably mounted thereon and adapted to engage with said forming-roller to curl the brim of a hat, a chain secured to said forming-block and passed over a suitable pulley on the frame of the machine and a foot-lever attached to the body of the machine and to which one end of the said chain is attached; said lever and chain providing means for moving the said forming-block out of engagement with the said forming-roller, substantially as shown and described.

2. In a machine for curling hatbrims provided with a-forming-roller, a hollow formingblock movably mounted thereon and adapted to engage with the forming-roller to curl the brim of a hat, means for passing steam through the said forming-block, projecting guide-arms provided upon the said forming-block and suitably mounted on the body of the machine, springs mounted upon the said projecting arms and interposed between the said forming-block and the body of the machine and adapted to keep the said forming-block normally in operative position and means for moving said forming-block out of operative position, substantially as shown and described.

3. In a machine for curling hat-brims provided with a forming-roller, a hollow formingblock lnovably mounted thereon and adapted to engage with the forming-roller to curl the brim of a hat, means for passing steam through the said forming-block, projecting guide-arms provided upon the said forming-block and suitably mounted on the body of the machine, springs mounted upon the said projecting arms and interposed between the said forming-block and the body of the machine and adapted to keep the said forming-block normally in operative position, a chain attached to the said formingblock and passing over a suitable pulley upon the frame of the machine and a foot-lever attached to the body of the machine and to whichthe said chain is attached and the said lever and chain providing a means for moving the said forming-block out of operative position, substantially as shown and described.
