Description

UNITED STATES Patented December 1, 1903.
PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK II. SMITH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO PHILIP P.
MENARD, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BELT-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 745,533, dated December 1, 1903.
Application filed March 9, 1903. Serial No. 146,886. (No model.)
' T aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK H. SMITH,
Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Belt-Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in belt-fasteners for securing the meeting ends of power-belts together; and it consists in the construction and combination of devices, substantially as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a belt-fastener embodying my improvements, showing the same applied to a belt. Fig. 2 'is a sectional view through the meeting end portions of the belt, showing the belt-fastener in elevation. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the blank from which my improved belt-fastener is formed.
In the construction of the form of my improved belt-fastener shown in the drawings I first make a blank A of sheet metal, which comprises a pair of bar-sections 1 at the ends of the blank and two or any desired number of link-sections 2, which connect the said bar-sections together. I The blank is then bent at the central point (indicated at a) and doubled to cause the bar-sections 1 to come in mutual contact and the end portions of the respective link-sections to come in mutual contact, and at the resulting outer end portions of the links the latter are formed with eyes 3 by bending the same outwardly either around a suitable mandrel or by the insertion of a suitable pointed tool, as will be understood. In the operation of this form of my improved belt-fastener the bar formed by the bar-sections 1 is disposed across the belt, near one end thereof, caused to lie on its outer side, and the links 2 are inserted through openings 6 with which the end portions of the belt are provided, the extreme end portions of the said links having the said eyes being caused to protrude through the openings in one end of the belt and to project beyond the outer side of said end of the belt, and a suitable key-bar 4, such as a pin or the like, is then inserted in the said eyes and caused to lie'on the outer side of that end of the belt, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. This form of my improved belt-fastener is exceedingly simple in construction, being made of a single piece of sheet metal, which may be readily stamped in the required form by suitable machinery at an exceedingly slight cost, and, moreover, the same is entirely efiicient in securing the ends of a belt together and is very strong and durable.
I do not desire to limit myself to either of the precise forms of my invention herein shown and described, as it is evident that further modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of my invention and within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect byLetters Patent, is-
Abelt-fastener comprising a blank formed of sheet metal and having bar-sections forming its ends and links connecting the said barsections, said blank being bent at a point midway between the ends of the links and doubled to bring the respective end portions of the respective links in mutual contact and the bar-sections also in contact, and eyes formed in the resulting ends of the links adapted for the insertion of a key-bar, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FREDERICK H. SMITH.
