Description

I @gutter tstretrxtt @frn Lener@ Patent 'Nag 74,543, dans February 18, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN PRESSES POR PAKINGERUIT.

Know all men that I, THOMAS J. JONES, of Rochester, in the county OfOakland, and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Presses for Packing Fruit; andI do declare that the following is a. true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the'accompanying drawings, and to the letters of referencemarked thereon, and being a part'of this specification. i
This invention is designed to till a want long felt among fruit-growers and dealerls,'by producing a cheap,
durable, and easily-operated press, for the purpose of packing fruit in barrels for shipment or storage.
I will now proceed to describe its' construction, and name its parts, so that those skilledin the art can manufacture my press. i Y A representsV the `floor of the press, approached hy' the inclined plane B, ,both Hoor and inclined plane being sustained by a proper flame.l l Attached to the ioor and sustaining-frame are thetwo perpendicular posts C C, and D is a rock-shaft jourualled into the posts C C, near their top.` Upon this rock-shaft is attached a calnsheped projection, E. Fis a lever to operate the rock-shaft D.v ilhis rockeshaft is provided, at one end, with a ratchet-wheel, Gr, and H is a pawl attached to one of the posts C', nearest the ratchet-wheel, and to operate it. The posts C C should be high enough to admit of a barrel to stand upon the floor and under the rockfshaft. A
I is an axle, and J J proper wheels, upon which the press is sustained and moved, as may be desired.
` To use my press, place the barrel, viilledvtith fruit or other articles requiring to be packed, upon the `floor. Then placethe barrelhead upon the top, and on top of the head place a proper follower. Then draw the lever which turns the rock-shaft, so that it will bring the cam-shaped projection upon the follower, and continue the motionuntil the head is forced into place. Then throw the pawl into use with the ratchet, to hold the had in place While the hoops are being driven. l
What I claim as my invention, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is y p The combination and arrangement of the cam-shaped projection E with lever F, rock-shaft D, ratchetwheel G,pawl H, posts C C, door A, inclined plane B, axle I, and `wheels J J, when operating as and for the purpose herein set `forth. i
T. J. JONES.
