SPECIFICATION forming part oi' Letters .Patent No. '745,1 12, dated November 24, 1903. Application filed March 25, 1903. Serial No. 149.646. (No specimens.)
To a/ZZ whom t may concern,.-V
Beit known that LJosEPH HMARGERISON, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Terry Fabrics, of.
which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to produce Turkish towels or other looped pile or terry fabrics of a more ornamental or desirable character than usual 5 and with this object in View my invention consists of a looped pile or terry fabric in which the looped or terry surface alternates with a closely-woven web having a damask or other jacquard figure or pattern thereon.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a towel made in accordance with myinvention. Fig. 2 is a side View of part of the same, and Fig. 3 is a similar View representing another embodiment of my invention.
Turkish towels or like terry fabrics having closely-woven webs at each end of the looped pile or -terry portion have heretofore been produced; but with the present methods of production no formation of a pattern or iigure other than mere stripes in the said border portions has been possible, since the formation of a damask or like pattern or gure other than a stripe necessitates the control of all of the warp-threads of the fabric, both ground and terry, by means of a jacquard-machine during the weaving of said borders, and such method of control has not hitherto been considered practicable. I have, however, devised mechanism whereby such control of the threads is effected, and in an application, Serial No. 149,545, filed by me and bearing even date herewith, I have described and claimed such mechanism.
In the drawings, 1 represents the looped or terry body of the towel, and 2 the closelywoven and patterned end borders.
I have illustrated my invention as embodied in a towel having a name woven in each of the end borders; but it will be evident that any desired figure or pattern can be produced, since each of the warp-threads of the fabric is controlled by the jacquard-machine of the loom.
In Figs. 1 and 2 I have illustrated my invention as applied to a fabric having terry loops on both faces; but it can be applied with equal facility to fabrics having terryloops on but one face-as shown, for instance, in Fig. 3.
I am aware that it hasbeen proposed to form patterns in the terry portion of the fabric by carrying all of the terry warp-threads from one face of the fabric to the other in order to form a depressed ground with raised terry figures thereon; but this is essentially different from my invention and is not claimed by me.
I am also aware that it has been proposed to weave terry towels with fancy end borders byrunnin gthewarpstransverselyof the towel, so that the fancy end borders could be woven with warps alongside of those employed in weaving the terry portion; but in a towel made in accordance with my invention the warp-threads run lengthwise and the same i warp-threads are employed in the production of the closely-woven and patterned end border as are employed in the central or terry Yportion of the fabric.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A fabric having a portion with looped or terry surface and a closely-woven portion Woven with the same Warp-threads as the terry portion and having jacquard ligure or pattern therein, substantially as specified.
2. A fabric having a portion with terry loops on both faces and a closely-woven portion woven with the same warp-threads as the terry portion and having jacquard gure or pattern therein, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I haveV signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOSEPH H. MARGERISON.
