Description

CHARLES s. CRANE, oF sELMA, ALABAMA.
Letters Patent 1No. 74,509, dated February 18, 1868.
GARD-SAFE.
@its rtmle nimm tu in tlgrsz tirs @anni mit mating part ai 11n same,
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, CHARLES S. CRANE, of Selma, State of Alabama, have invented an Album or Card Receptacle; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and' exact description of the same, reference being herein had to the drawings that accompany this specification, and which make part of the same.
My invention consists in constructing a case that, in appearance, is merely a picture-frame, but really is an enclosure or receptacle lfor photographs or for business or other cards.
The drawings show the case as a suspended frame, and the same open and lined with cards, and also part-s of the case in section.
A frame, of any shape of moulding, a, and of any desirable size, is made of suicient thickness to admit a space behind the front pictures, b and c, deep enough to allow clips for holding cards upon the hack of the frame and -on the inside of the doors, without the cards touching each other when the doors are closed. This is shown at d in the drawings. The doors are so constructed as to form on'their edges a part ot' the framemoulding, asshown by e, and so that, -when closed, there is no appearance of hinges or joints. This is accomplished by the doors being hung with a rule or tablefjoint, as designated byfin the drawings, the edge of thi; moulding, back of the hinge, turning hack when the door opens, into a recess in the moulding prepared for that purpose. The doors are made so that a picture can be put in them through a slot, z', left in their upper ends forthat purpose, grooves being provided to receive the pictures. A strip of thin metal, h, has the partsg punched loose on their tops and sides, the bottom ,ieft fast to the strip. These being pressed forward and properly bent, form holders for the cards. As many as required nf the strips o'r clips are attached to the insides of the receptacle. A spiral or other spring, k, is inserted in theframe, to force openthe doors when the pin m is withdrawn from the catch n on the door c by means of the cord o. A spring is connected to `the pin m to return it to its place. One door holds the other closed by means'of the overlap of the moulding.
Wha-t I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is- The album or card-case, with an exterior as a. picture-frame, having an interior receptacle, the joints, hinges, and entrance concealed from appearance bythe mouldings, substantially as specified and shown.
