To wZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY T. RAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Forsythe, in the county of Macon and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wagons, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in wagons, and more particularly to grain-loading attachments therefor, and has for its primary objects the provision of a detachable bin or loader or a series of bins or loaders which may be readily placed upon or removed from the wagon-jbody and which said bins having associated therewith instrumentalities whereby the grain maybe removed therefrom at will, together with means for guiding the bins to their position upon the wagon.
Other novel features will be more particularly pointed out and readily understood from the following detailed description when read in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, and wherein a preferable embodiment of my invention is disclosed for the purpose of illustration.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of myimprovements applied to a wagon-body. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of one of the bins removed. Fig. 3 is a view of one of the bins shown in cross-section. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 5 is a bottomjview, and Fig. 6 is a side View, of the wagon-body with the bins removed.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts in the several views, A represent-s a vehicle-body having side and end sections a and 0., respectively, and the ordinary flat bottom a. Adapted to rest on the vehicle-body are a series of loading-bins B, having end sections B, preferably curved at their top I) and. having a flat bottom Z). The sides of the end sections have a straight portion b of a length substantially equal to the depth of the vehicle-body, so as to fit snugly between the sides thereof and rest upon its bottom a, and an outwardlycurved upper portion 6, extending beyond the sides a of the Wagon-body, thus affording bins of large capacity for comparatively small wagon-bodies. These end sections B are formed of any suitable material and are joined together by side sections 0, preferably formed of metallic material and bent to correspond to the shape of the sides of the said end sections 13, to which the said side sections 0 are attached in any suitable manner. is also provided with a dumping-bottom comprising gate-sections D and D, hinged, respectively, to the inner surface of the side sections 0 and slightly above the lower edge thereof at d to admit the gate-sections being swung open to a position parallel to the side sections, the said side sections affording stops for limiting the movement of the gates. To aflord a suitable locking means for the gates D and D, I preferably provide locking-levers E, pivoted at one end 6 to the sides of the lower surface of the gate D, the free ends of said levers projecting over and engaging the complementary gate I) and having intermediate its ends an elongated extension 6, adapted to be engaged by suitable operating ropes or chains 6, which pass through apertures c in the side sections 0 of the bin. On the sides of the bin adjacent the swinging portions of the gates are lugs or projections F, upon which rest the lovers E when in their normal position, thus retaining the gate sections in closed position. To normally retain the levers E in looking position, I provide an elongated spring member G, secured intermediate its ends to the under surface of the gate-section D, the free ends of which engage a sleeved portion e, pivoted to the free ends of the levers E. The gatesections are cut away at their contiguous edges adjacent the sides thereof, as at cl and (1, so that when the locking-levers are dis engaged from the lugs F the gate-sections may freely open and close without contacting said lugs. It will readily be seen that by drawing on the operating-ropes e the lovers E will be released, and the weight of the load on the bin will automatically open the gates thereof and dump the contents. To close the gates into normal position after the dumping operation, I provide the following mechanism: Rigidly secured to the inner surface of The bin B.
the gate-sections D and D and intermediate the front and back thereof are angle-bars G, to the free ends of which are pivoted, one on each side thereof, upwardly-extending bars H, preferably flat and affording a smooth guideway therebetween,and into which guideway project the free ends of transverse bars I, rigidly secured at their center to blocks '6 on the side sections B of the bin. The bars H, being formed in pairs, as above described, each pair is inclined toward its opposite pair and is secured thereto by a bar it, which bars h are in turn connected together by a transverse rod J, adapted to be engaged by an opcrating rope or chain K. The rod J also constitutes a handle for the bin. It will thus be seen that after the gate-sections D and I) have been opened and the contents removed therefrom it is only necessary to draw upon the rope K, which will in turn operate the bars H to readjust the gates into normal position. The bins being detachable, they may be raised from the wagon-body by attaching the rope K to a crane to an elevated track and placed upon a truck to be carried to any desired storage place before dumping the contents.
To afford a suitable guide for aiding the placing of the bins upon the vehicle-body and to relieve the sides of the body from unnecessary strain and bumps, I attach to one or both of the vehicle sides what I term a bumper, comprising an elongated strip of wood or other suitable material L, loosely secured to outwardly-extending angle-supports M, round in configuration and swiveled at their lower ends to the standards of the vehicle, the supports being thus automatically adjustable.
Many minor changes in the details of my construction may be made without in the least departing from the spirit of my invention.
' Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with a vehicle having a 7 suitable body portion, of a series of loadingbins having side sections with a straight portion adapted to fit snugly the inner surface of the sidesof the vehicle-body, and a flat bottom arranged to rest upon the bottom of the vehicle, said bin sides having an outwardlyextended portion above the vehicle-body.
2. In combination with a vehicle-body, of a bin therefor adapted to fit snugly the inner surface of the sides thereof, and having a dumping-bottom, means whereby, the bottom may be opened, and means forclosing the bottom comprising upwardly-extended rods pivotally secured thereto and having a sliding engagement with the sides of the bin, a connection for said rods at their upper ends, and an operating-rope attached to said connection.

4:. In combination with a vehicle-body, of a bin therefor, said bin having a swinging bottom, a lug on one of the sides of the bin, a lever adapted to engage said lug and lock the bottom in its closed position, and means for closing the bottom, comprising upwardly-extended arms pivotally secured thereto and having a sliding engagement with the sides of the bin, and a handle connecting said rods.
5. In combination with a vehicle-body, of a bin therefor, said bin having bottom sections hinged to the sides thereof and adapted to swing outwardly, and means for normally retaining the sections in closed position, comprising'lugs on the side sections and springactuated locking-levers attached to one of the bottom sections and adapted to engage the complementary bottom section and the lugs on the side sections.
6. In combination with a vehicle-body, of a bin therefor, said bin having bottom sections hinged to the inner surface of the sides of the bin at a point slightly above the lower edge thereof andadapted to swing outwardly, the sides of the bin below the hinges limiting the outward movement of the bottom sections.
7. In combination with a vehicle-body, of a bin therefor, said bin having bottom sections hinged to the sides thereof and slightly above the lower edge of the sides, means for normally retaining the bottom sections in closed position, comprising lugs on the side sections of the bin and spring-actuated locking-levers attached to one of the bottom sections and adapted to engage the complementary bottom section and the lugs on the side sections, said bottom sections being cut away at their sides adjacent the lugs and said levers having-secured thereto operating-ropes arranged to pass through apertures in the bin sides.
' 8. In combination with a vehicle-body, of a bin therefor, said bin having bottom sections hinged to the sides thereof, of means for open ing the bottom sections and means for closing the same, said closing means comprising upwardly-extended rods pivotally secured to the bottom sections and having guideways thereon adapted to engage guides on the bin sides, a connection for said rods at their upper ends, and an operating-rope attached to said connection.
9. In combination with a vehicle-body, of a bin therefor, angle-rods pivotally secured to one side of the vehicle-body and a bumper attached to said angle-rods.
