Description
(No Model.)
W. & J. H. LEONH'ARDT.
DUMPINGWAGON."
No. 319,497. Patented June 9, 1885.
WVILLIAM LEONHARDT AND JOHN H. LEONHARDT, OF \VAVERLY, MD.
DUMPlNG-WAGON.
ESPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,497, dated June 9, 1885.
Application filed July 31, 1884.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, WILLIAM LEONHARIDT and J OHN H. LEONHARDT, of Waverly, Baltimore county, Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dumping Wagons or Carts, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, forming part hereof, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a dumpingwagon embodying our improvements. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the body. I Fig. 3 is a fragmentary top plan view showing devices in position for running coal to the rear of the body. Fig. 4 is a similar fragmentary View, the devices being in position to run the coal to one side.
Like letters of reference mark the same parts in all figures. 1
Our invention has relation to dumping wagons or carts; and it consistsin the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter first fully described, and afterward specifically pointed out in the claims. The running-gear of the wagon is of any ordinary approved construction, and forms no part of our invention. \Ve will therefore make no detail description of said running-gear, but will proceed at once to describe the construction of the improved portion of the wagon.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A is the body, which is provided with a pivot, a, on each side, located centrally of the length and above the center of the height. These pivbts are provided with groovedpulleys a, around which pass chains 13, one end of which are secured at b to uprights C, from whence they pass downward, as before stated, under the pulleys a, thence upward and over pulleys d, attached at the top of standards D, thence downward to shaft E, upon which they are wound when desired, said shaft being turned by crank F, through the medium of pinions f, engaging a gear-wheel, e, on said shaft E.
The parts just described have been mentioned in the plural, notwithstanding the fact that but a single series of them is shown in the drawings, for the reason that they are all duplicated, a complete series being located on each side of the wagon or cart. The stand (No niodel.)
ards O D are attached to the corners of a turntable, G, which is centrally pivoted in the center of the bed H of the wagon.
I is a stationary upper portion of the rear of the cart.
J J are the movable portions, the part J being secured by hinge j to a sliding bar, K, mounted in ways or loops K, attached to the side of the wagon and held in position by means of set-screw 7c. The part J is secured by means of hinge j to a similar sliding bar, K moving in loops K and adjusted by setscrew k. i L is a projecting rear portion of the floor of the wagon.
M in Fig. 3 and M in Fig. 4 represent the chute.
Hinged to the part J at n is a bar, N, having a downward-projecting pin, n, which engages, when the parts are in position shown in Figs. 2 and 4, a staple or loop, a secured cured to partJ, so that the parts J J in such position form, substantially, a single piece, being thus rigidly secured together.
O is a curved guide attached to the piece J, the use of which will be hereinafter explained.
I is the lever hinged at p to the body of the wagon or cart, and provided at p with the pin which enters a slot, q, in a lever, Q, pivoted at q to the bed of the cart. A set-screw, 19 on the pin serves to secure the levers P Q in any desired adjustment.
The operation of our device may be described as follows: The wagon being loaded, and it being desired to elevate and dump the same, the body is raised, as before described ,by means of the crank F and the gears and chains, the
chain 13 being wound upon the shaft E, thus taking up the slack or shortening the loop which passes around and under the pulleys a on pivots a. Having been raised to a sufficient height, proper tilt is given to the body and it is held in its adjusted position by tightening up the nut 19', which rigidly adjusts the 9 levers P and Q. If it is desired to chute the coal out to rearward, the chute is adjusted as shown at M in Fig. 3, and the lever N is raised sufficiently to release pin n from the staple a This allows both J J to move independently on their hinges jj, the extent of said movement being regulated and guided by the move- IOO ment of'the pin a in the guard 0. Should it,
however, be desired to chute the coal to one side, the chute is adjusted 'as shown at M in Fig. 4. In this case the lever Nis not moved from the position shown in Fig. 2, but the setscrew k is loosened, which willpermit the bar K to slide rearward and allow the rigid endgate, composed of the parts J J, to swing on the hinge j at the opposite side of the wagonbody and leave an opening at one side of the end-gate to permit the coal to run into sidewise-turned chute M, as shown in Fig. 4.
It will be seen that a very reliableand easilyoperated' lift is provided, and that the cart or wagon may be easily and conveniently arranged to chute coal either to the rear or to either side, as described.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is 1. The combination, with the bed of a Wagon, of uprights 0D, the body having pivots a,and chain B, secured to upright Oand passing down under the pivot a, and thence up over the upper end of the standards D, and thence .down to a suitable winding mechanism, as set forth, 2. The combination, with the bed ofa wagon, of the turn-table G, uprights OD, body A, chain B, secured to the upright '(l and passing under the pivot a and over the upright D, and shaft E, gear-wheel e, pinion f, and crank F, as set forth.
3. The combination, with the bed of a wagon, of the tail-board or end-gate secured thereto by means, substantially as described, whereby it may be moved bodily to the rear, or upon a hinge at either side orhinges on both sides, as set forth.
4. The combination, with the bed of on, of the end-gate composed of parts J J, hinges j j, side bars, K and K and the adj usting-screw, substantially as set forth.
5. The eombinatiomwith the bed of a wagon, of the end-gate consisting of parts J J, hinges j j, end bar pivoted at n to the part J and carrying pin a, and the guide 0 and staple n", secured to the part J, as set forth.
6. A dumping-wagon provided with a tailgate made in two sections and provided with mechanism, substantially as described, whereby it may be opened at either side as a rigid gate or in the center as a double gate, as set forth.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM. LEONHARDT. JOHN H. LEONHARDT.
