SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Eateut No. 744,833, dated November 24., 1903.
Application filed April 15', 1903.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. WEBER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Angle-Chairs, of which the following is a specification, accompanied by drawings.
My invention relates to rail-supports for railroad-rail joints, although the uses of my improved support or chair are not limited to rail-joints, for my invention may be used in any connection in which it is found applicable.
One of the objects of my invention is to enable rails of diiferent weight and size to be conyeniently supported in surface and aline- Inent upon a suitable support or rail-chair, although my invention also aifords provision for compensating for the thickness of insulation beneath the base of one of the two rails of the same weight and size in a rail-joint.
Other objects of my invention are to increase the strength and efficiency of stepjoints and insulated joints byimproving upon the construction of the rail supports or chairs.
Further objects of my invention will hereinafter appear; and to these ends my invention consists of the improved support shown in this instance as an angle-chair embodying the features of construction and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter fully described and claimed in this specification, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of an anglechair embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan View. Figs. 4. and 5 show in side elevation and plan view a modification of the chair. Figs. 6 and 7 show in side View and transverse section another form of the chair. Figs. 8 and 9 show in side view and end elevation a modification. Fig. 10 shows in end elevation a modification of the corrugations upon the base of the chair.
As hereinbefore stated, one of the uses of my invention is found in step-joints for railroads, wherein rails of different weight and size are suitably supported and maintained in surface and alinement.
In Figs. 1, 2, and 3 it will be seen that the rail-chair comprises a base A and an upright or flange B, while a strengtheningfillet G extends longitudinally of the chair at the juncture of the base and upright. In order to provide a step upon the base of the chair for the rail of shorter height, it will be seen that the base is formed with a raised portion D, constructed integrally with the base of the chair. The raised portion D may be formed in any suitable manner, and according to this construction it will be seen that no additional metal is applied to the chair to form the'raised portion or step, and a strong and efficient construction is obtained. In the figures the raised portion D extends substantially over one-half of the base'of the chair.
In Figs. 4: and 5 a plurality of raised portions E are formed integrally with the base of the chair, and, as shown, these portions extend transversely of the length of the chair, forming a seat for one of the rails. There may be any desired number of such raised portions E, I having shown but one in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 and two in Figs. 4. and 5; but I am not to be understood as limiting myself to the number, shape, or arrangement of the raised portions forming the step upon the base of the chair.
In Figs. 6 and 7 a modified form of construction is shown in which a portion of the base of the chair is corrugated, in this instance the corrugations F being shown extending longitudinally of the chair, while in Figs. 8 and 9 the corrugations G extend transversely of the base of the chair. In either case the upper surfaces or portions of the corrugations form a step or seat for the base of one of the rails of the joint, and the said corrugations should project beyond the plane surface of the base of the chair to the desired distance to form a step of the proper height.
In Fig. 10 the corrugations H are shown with squared shoulders I instead of being rounded, as in Figs. 7 and 8. In Fig. 10 the tops of the corrugations are flatter than in the other figures; but I am not to be understood as limiting myself to any particular form of corrugation, for many different forms of corrugations may be devised without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Obviously some features of my invention may be used without others, and my invention may be embodied in widely-varying forms. Therefore, Without limiting myself to the construction shown and described nor enumerating equivalents, I claim, and desire to obtain by Letters Patent, the following:
1. An angle or rail chair comprising a base and a flange projecting therefrom, said base being provided with a corrugated portion forming a step, for substantially the purposes set forth.
2. An angle or rail chair comprising a base and a flange projecting therefrom, said base being provided with a corrugated portion forming a step, the corrugations extending longitudinally of the chair, for substantially.

3. An angle or'rail chair, comprising a base and an upright, and provided with a raised portion pressed outwardly from the base of the chair, and thereby hollow underneath,
forming a hollow step on said base, for substantially the purposes set forth.
4.. An angle or rail chair, comprising a base and an upright, and provided with a plurality of raised portions pressed outwardly from the base of the chair, and thereby each raised portion being hollow underneath, said raised portions together forming a step, for substantially the purposes set forth.
5. A bed-plate for a rail-joint, having a portion of the body of the same corrugated, forming ribs on both top and bottom, whereby a corrugated step is provided on one side of the plate, for substantially the purposes set forth.
