JOHN-Wt TREEN, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
COMBINATION STEP-LADDER AND IRONINGw-BOARD.
"SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 744,821, dated November 24, 1903.
Application filed March 9, 1903.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. TREEN, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Jersey Oity,in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Step- Ladders and Ironing-Boards, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved combination step-ladder and ironing-board which is simple in construction and operation and comparativelyinexpensive and which may be conveniently used either as an ironing-board or step-ladder whenever desired and which may be compactly folded together when not in use.
- The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a side view showing my improved combination ironing-board and stepladder in position for use as an ironing-board3 Fig. 2, a perspective view showing the same in position for use as a step-ladder; and Fig. 3, a side View showing the parts of the device folded together, as when not in use.
In the practice of my invention I provide a board a, which is adapted to serve as an ironing-board and which is wider at one end than at the other and to the narrower end of which is hinged, as shown at a a ladder b, comprising two side bars b connected by the usual steps or rounds b and the upper end of this ladder is also narrower than the lower end.
Pivoted to the outer sides of the side bars I) of the ladder and centrally thereof, as shown at c, are supplemental bars d, the lower ends of which are adapted to enter recesses d formed in projections diwith which the wider end of the board a is provided when the device is in position for use as an ironing-board, as shown in Fig. 1.
Pivotally connected with the side bars b of the ladder, above the middle portion thereof, as shown at c, are rods f, adapted to engage hooks or staples f secured to the sides of Serial No. 146,329. (No model.)
the board 0t above the middle thereof, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and these rods are intended to strengthen the device when used as a step-ladder, and the bars dare provided below the middle thereof with hooks or staples h, with which said rods are also adapted to engage when the device is used as an ironing-board, as shown in Fig. l.
Hinged to the upper end of the board a, as shown at t, is a step j, which is provided with pivoted rode it, having hooks at their free ends adapted to engage pins or other devices secured to the board a, and by means of which the stepj may be held in a horizontal position when the device is used as a stepladder, as shown in Fig. 2, or lowered in line with the board a when the device is used as an ironing-board; but said stepj may be held in a position at right angles to the board a when the device is used as an ironing-board.
As thus described it will be seen that the device when used as an ironing-board may also serveas a strong and substantial table which may be used for various purposes, and when in the position shown in Fig. 2 it forms a strong and substantial step-ladder thoroughly braced and capable of sustaining great weight, and said device may also be compactly folded together when not in use, as shown in Fig. 3.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A combination step-ladder and an ironingboard comprising a board a, a ladder hinged to one end thereof, bars pivoted to the opposite sides of the ladder and adapted at one end to engage the end of the board opposite the end to which the ladder is hinged, and rods loosely connected with the sides of the ladder and adapted in one position of the parts to engage the board and in another position of the parts to engage the bars which are pivoted to the sides of theladder, substantially as shown and described.
2. A combination step-ladder and an ironing-board comprising a board a, a ladder hinged to one endthereof, bars pivoted to the opposite sides of the ladder and adapted at one end to engage the end of the board opposite the end to which the ladder is hinged, and rods loosely connected with the sides of the ladder and adapted in one position of the my invention T have signed my name, in presparts to engage the board and in another poence of the subscribing witnesses, this 7th day to sition of the parts to engage the bars which of March, 1903.
are pivoted to the sides of the ladder, the JOHN W TREEN v 5 board being also provided at the end to which the ladder is hinged with a hinged step, sub- Witnesses: stantially as shown and described. F. A. STEWART,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as 1 O. E. MULREANY.
