SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 744,802, dated November 24, 1903.

Be it known that I, DAVID B. SALTSMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Dowagiac, in the county of Cass and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grain-Drills, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in grain-drills.
It relates particularly to improvements in disk furrow-openers for grain-drills, although it is adapted for use in other relations.
The objects o f the invention are, first, to provide an improved disk furrow-opener for grain-drills and the like which is simple and compact in its construction and strong and d urable; second, to provide an improved disk furrow-opener for grain-drills and the like Which can be readily assembled and disassembled; third, to provide an improved bearing for disk structures of the class described which is thoroughly protected from the dirt and is at the same time readily accessible;
, fourth, to provide an improved bearing for disk structures of the class described which is easily lubricated and the lubricant retained therein.
Further objects, and objects relating' to details of construction, will deiinitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following` specification.

A structure embodying the features of my invention is clearly illustrated in the acco1npanying d1awings,forming a partof this speciiication, in which* Figure 1 is a side elevation View of a strueture embodying the features of my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail sectional view taken on a line corresponding to line 2 2 of Figs. l and 3 looking in the direction of the little arrows at the end of the sectionlines. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail side elevation view of a portion of the boot, showing its structure for the attachment of the bearing; vand Fig. 4 is a plan view of oneof the bearing-blocks C looking from the outside.

parts throughout the several in position on the boot by a bolt D, whichl clamps them securely in position. Each bearing-block C is provided with an annular flange or disk-like head C.
Mounted upon each bearing-block is a bearing-plate B', having an outwardly-projecting iiange B, adapted to embrace the head ofthe iiange C of the bearing-block. The bearingplate is provided with a shoulder at b, adapted to receive the disk B, which is secured in position by suitable rivets or the like.
The outwardly-projecting flange BH of the bearingeplate projects beyond the face of the bearing-block and is provided with screwthreads to receive the screw-threaded retainin'g plate or nut E. The retaining or threaded plate E also` forms a portion of the bearing of the disk.
The bearing-blocks are provided with oilpassages consisting of notches c in the boltholes, (see Fig. 4,) so that the oil passes freely fromthe chamber a within the boot tothe bearing. The oil is delivered to the chamber a' through the oil-duct d, arrai'lged in front of the boot.
The bearing-plates B are provided with annular grooves b on their inner faces to receive the packing-rings or washers c. These Washers are preferably made of felt or other fibrous material and assist in retaining the lubricant in the bearing and also in excluding the dust and dirt therefrom. The washers as thus placed are protected from any considerable wear and are very effective in retaining the lubricant and also in excluding the dirt. With the parts thus arranged the disks arel supported in such a manner that the strain thereon is reduced to a minimum.
The bearing is very accessible, and all that it is necessary to do is to remove the threaded Toward the lower plate E, and, if desired, the disk canA be released by releasing the bearing-blocks, the one bolt D securing them in position.
. I have illustrated and described my invention as applied to double disk structures adapted for use as furrow-openers for graindrills. It is, however, evident that the same is applicable for'use in other relations.
I have illustrated and described my improved disk structure in the form preferred by me on account of its economy in construction and durability in use. I am aware, however, that it is capable of considerable structural variation without departing from my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- Y. l. The combination of a boot; bearingblocks C having disk-like heads C/ thereon secured to said boot; oil-ducts c through said bearing blocks; an oilconduit a connected therewith; bearing plates B' having outwardly-projecting flanges B thereon mounted on said bearing-blocks; annular grooves b on the inner faces of said bearing-plates; washers of suitable iibrous material in said grooves; retaining-plates E, screw-threaded into said flanges; and disks B secured to said bearing-plates, for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of a boot; bearingblocks C having disk-like heads C thereon secured to saidboot; bearing-plates B' having outwardly-projectin g fianges B thereon mounted on said bearing blocks; annular grooves b on the inner faces of said bearingplates; washers of suitable fibrous material in said grooves; retaining-plates E screwthreaded into said iianges; and disks B'secured to said bearing-plates, for the purpose specified.

The combination of a boot; bearingblocks C having disk-like heads C thereon secured to said boot; oil-ducts c through said bearing-blocks; an oil-conduit d connected therewith; bearing-plates B having outwardly-projecting flanges Bl thereon, mounted on said bearing-blocks; retaining-plates E screw-threaded into said flanges; and disks B secured to said bearing-plates, for the purpose specified.

The combination of a boot; 'bearingblocks C having disk-like heads C' thereon secured to said boot; bearing-plates B having outwardly-projecting flanges B thereon Amounted on said bearing-blocks; retainingplatesE screw-threaded into said iianges; and disks B secured to said bearing-plates, for the purpose specified.

The combination of a boot; a bearingblock having a disk-like head at its outer end secured thereto an oil-duct through said bearing-block; a bearingplate having an outwardly-projecting iiange embracing said head mounted on said bearing-block; an annular groove on the inner face of said bearing-plate; a suitable washer therein; a retaining-plate secured to said flange; and a disk secured to said bearing-plate.
6. The combination of a boot; a bearingblock having a disk-like head at its outer end secured thereto; a bearing-plate having an outwardly-projecting Y flange embracing said head mounted on said bearing-block; an annular groove on the inner face of said bearing-plate; a suitable washer therein; a retaining-plate secured to said iiange; and a disk secured to said bearing-plate.
7. The combination of a boot; a bearingblock having a disk-like head at its outer end Secured thereto; an oilduct through said bearing-block; a bearing-plate having an out' wardly-proj ecting iiange elnbracing said head mounted on said bearing-block; aretainingplate secured to said iange; and a disk secured to said bearing-plate.
8. The combination of a boot; a bearingblock having a disk-like head at its outer end secured thereto; a bearing-plate having an outwardly-projecting flange embracing said head mounted on said bearing-block; a retaining-plate secured to said flange; and a disk secured to said bearing-plate.
9. The combination of abearing-block having a disk-like head at its outer end secured thereto; a bearing-plate mounted thereon having an outwardlyprojecting iiange embracing said head; a retaining-plate secured to said iange; and a disk secured to said bearing-plate. y
10. The combination of a bearing-block having a head; a bearing-plate embracing said head; and a cap screw-threaded to the bearing-plate to retain the plate in contact with the said flange to protect the same, for the purpose specified.

The combination of a bearing-block having a head abearing-plate mounted thereon; a retaining-plate screw-threaded to engage said bearing-plate and retain it and the head together; a groove between the said plate and head; and a fibrous washer in the said groove, coacting forv the purpose speciied.
12. The combination of a bearing-block having a head; a bearing-plate mounted thereon; a retaining-plate screw-threaded to engage said bearing-plate and retain it and the head together, coacting for the purpose specified.
13. The combination of a block having a head; bearing plates embracing the said head; a groove containing a fibrous washer between the head and bearing-plate, coacting for the purpose specified.
14. In a disk drill, the combination with a support having a lubricant-duct therein, and disks at opposite sides of said support having centralbearing portions, of bearing-heads secured to opposite sides of the support and overlapping the outer faces of the central bearing portions secured to said disks, said blocks having lubricant-ducts therein communicating with the duct in the support and cups inclosing said blocks and secured to the disks.

In a disk drill, the combination with a support having a lubricant-passage therein, and two disks having central bearing portions, of bearingblocks detaehably secured to the opposite sides of the said support and overlapping the bearing portions of said disks, said blocks having lubricant-ducts communicatie g with the passage in the support and cups inclosing said blocks and secured to the disks.
1G. In a disk drill, the combination with a support of a bearing-block, abolt and nut securing the block to the support, a disk provided with a central bearing portion turning on the block, and a bearing-cup comprising two members, one member secured to the disk and the other removablysecured thereto to permit the removal of the block through the member secured to the disk.
17. In a disk drill, the combination with a support of bearing-blocks on opposite sides thereof, of disks with bearing portions disposed between the bearing-blocks and the support, a bolt passing through the said blocks and support and secured in place by a nut, and bearingwcups turning on the block, each cup comprising two members removably secured together and one member attached to the disk.
18. In a disk drill, the combination with a support having a lubricant-duet therein, of disks having central bearing portions, of bearing-blocks, of a bolt passed through alined openings in the bearing-blocks and support, a nut screwed onto the bolt and secured to opposite sides of the support, and sectional bearing-cups secured to the disks and turning on blocks disposed between the bearing portions of the disks and the bearing-cups.
19. In a disk drill, the combination with a support, Vof a bearing-block removably secured to the support, a disk having a bearing portion turning on said block, anda bearingcup turning on the block and comprised of two members, one secured to the disk and the other removably secured thereto to permit the removal of the bearing-block without disconnecting the member from the disk.
30. In a disk drill, the combination with a support of a disk having a bearing at its central portion, of a bearing-block removably secured to the support and disposed between the bearing portion of the disk and a bearing-cup, said bearing-cup turning on the block and comprising` two members, one secured to the disk and the other secured thereto to permit the removal of the bearingeblock without disconnecting the member from the disk.
