PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN WALTER GLASS, OF BELFAST, NEW ZEALAND.
NON-RIEFILLABLE BOTTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 744,746, dated November 24, 1903.
7 Application filed August 21, 1902 Serial No. 120,563. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN WALTER GLASS, engineer, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Belfast, in the Colony of New Zealand, have invented a new and useful Non-Refillable Bottle; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
The object of this invention is to provide a bottle that it shall not be possible to refill after it has been once emptied, and in carrying the invention into efiect I expand the lower portion of the neck, so as to form an inner annular shoulder. The expanded portion is made to taper downward and is provided at'its lower end-with a ridge or ledge,
that may be molded in the glass. Resting on the ledge is a rubber ring of I-shaped section that supports a ball of glass or other inaterial to form a ball-Valve. Over the ball and upon the floor of p the rubber ring a cylinder of glass or other suitable material is placed. The cylinder is closed at its upper end and has holes orports in its body, while springs of steel are fixed circumferentially upon its upper end.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a. sectional elevation of my device, and Fig. 2 is a sectional plan on the line 1 2. Fig. 3 is a view of the cylinder.
A is a bottle the neck ofwhich is expanded to form an annular shoulder B.
O is a rubber ring resting uponan annular ledge c and that supports a cylinder D. Said cylinder is closed at its upper end, while its lower end is open to receive a ball E, that seats upon the ring 0, forming therewith a valve. The cylinder -D has ports d d and springs d (1', consisting of narrow pieces of spring-steel, that are inserted into the edge cannot receive any more liquid. When the bottle is decanted, the ball E will leave its seatand move forward in the cylinder, and the liquid contents will have free egress by way of the open valve and the ports d d and' out between the springs d d to the mouth of the bottle- Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed,
I declare that what I claim is In combination with the neck of a bottle having an undercut shoulder B, a seat for a valve, a ball-valve adapted to said seat, a cylinder closed at its upper end and arranged over the ball, openings or ports in the cylinder, and springs d arranged at different points'around the upper edge of the cylinder, I
said springs diverging and having their upper ends engaging the shoulder B, substantially as described and for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribingwitnesses.
BENJAMIN WALTER GLASS.
