PATENT @Erica AUSTIN BROOMFIELD, OF CRAIGS, MISSISSIPPI.
HARRQVV.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 744,715, dated November 24, 1903.
Application filed January 7,1903. Serial Nor 138,165. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that. I, AUSTIN BRQOMEIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Craigs, in the county of Yazoo and State of Mississippi, have invented new and useful Improvements in Harrows, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful im-V provements in harrows, and its object is to provide a device of this character which may be readily adjusted to bring the tooth-hold ing bar to any desired angle in relation to the tongue of the harrow.
'Another object is to provide novel means for holding the teeth of the harrow in posi- `tion upon the bar, whereby they may be this bar and extends at right angles there-v from and is adjustably secured to the tongue,
thereby permitting said bar to be held at any desired angle to the tongue. A
The invention also consists in employing securing-straps each of which is hinged between the sections of the bar and is adapted to swing over the barrow-teeth and clamp the same against said bar, suitable means being employed for securing the straps in clamping position.
The invention also consists in providing a barrow-tooth which comprises a stem and oppositely-extending teeth at the ends thereof. This stem is adapted to be inverted, and either of the teeth can be employed upon the ground.
The invention also consists in the further novel construction and combination of parts herein after more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved harrow. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is ahorizontal section through one end of the tooth-holding bar of the harrow. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the tooth-securing strap. Fig. 5 is a transverse section through the bar of the harrow, and Fig. 6 is a detail view of a barrow-tooth.
Referring to the figures by numerals of ret'- erence, 1 is a tongue havinghandles 2 extending upward therefrom, said handles being braced by means of bars 3, which are connectedto a plate 4, secured to the rear end of the tongue. This tongue is pivoted at a point 5 adjacent to the rear end of the central portion of a tooth-carrying bar 6. This bar is preferably formed of a stripof metal. bent upon itself to formparallel sections, and said sections are extended forward at one end of the bar to form an arm 7, which embraces the n tongue 1 and is adapted to be adjustably secured thereto by means of a pin 8, which may be arranged within any one of a series of apertures 9, formed within said arm.
At desired intervals within the bar 6 are arranged pivot-pins 10, upon each of which is mounted a strap 11, preferably curved lon gitudinally and having an aperture 12 in its free end for the reception of a securing-bolt 13, adaptedto extend between the sections of the bar 6 and engage a plate 14, embracing the rear edgel of the bar. The front edge of each of the parallel sections of bar 6 is provided with apertures 15, arranged adjacent to the pivoted pins 10. These recesses are adapted to receive stems 16, having oppositely-extending barrow-teeth 17 formed at the ends thereof. These` stems are secured within the recesses by swinging the straps 1l thereover and clamping the same thereagainst by means of the bolts 13, before referred to. When it is desired to remove one or more of the teeth for the purpose of replacing or inverting them, it is merely necessary to loosen the bolt which clamps the securing-strip of said tooth in position. The same can then be readily removed.
It will be seen that this harrow is extremely simple and durable in construction and can be manufactured at slight cost. l
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do IOO not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new s- In a barrow, the Combination with parallel recessed strips forming a tooth-carrying bar; of a tooth-holding strap pivot-ally mounted at one end between said strips and adapted to 1:: swing outward therefrom, a plate embracing i the strips, and means engaging said plate and the other end of the strap for holding said strap in retaining position.
In testimony whereof I aiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
AUSTIN BROOMFIELD.
