To ALL WHOM" 1T Mer coNoERN= Be it known that I, Jo'srnn M. PAT'roN, ofTipton, in the county of Cedar, and State of Iowa, have invented a new and improved Bee-Hive; and that the following description, taken in connection with the acconipanifihg drawings, hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specification of the same, wherein I have set forth the i nature and principles of my said' improvements, by which my invention may be distinguished from allothers of a similar class, together with such parts as I claim and desire tohave secured to me by Letters-Patent.

i Thisinvention consists in a newand improved mode of constructing the hive, whereby the temperature of thesame is rendered'quite uniform, the bees and contents of the hive'being protected from severe cold in winter, and from heat in' summer.

The invention also consists in a new and improved trap for protecting the beesirom the ravages of the bee-moth.I In the accompanying shectot` drawingsi l i Figurel is a horizontal section of my invention, taken in the line xx, fig. 2.

A represents the vbody of the hive, which is constructed with double walls, andusuch a manner as to ,allow a space, a, at each side of the hive, to receive a non-conducting material, such as paper, charcoal,plaster of Paris, or other suitable substance. The four corner-posts, b, are grooved to receive the walls e c. c', the space a being between c c. The outer wall c basan externalwall, d, secured to it, and the inner wall e does not extend np as high as the others.` The upper honey-boxes B are rtained invtheir place by cleats d', whichare attached to them at one side, and fit in grooves made in the posts 6. The hive represented in the drawings is designed for tnnrv colonies .oi`- bees, each having a separate entrance, and the lovter'or bread-boxs VC communicate with l each other by means of'openingse, which may be cut off, or closed when desired. by means of slidesfarranged or applied in any suitable manner.' The top or cap of the hive may be constructed double, with a non-conducting sbstance between, like the sides of the hive, or a singlethick or`heavy piece of plank maybe used; 'a single or doublepitch may be given the cap or top. D represent tnlbes, which serve as the bee-entrances, and project beyond the sides of the hive.y These tubes have perforated slides E in their outer ends,.by .closing which the i bees may be confined in the boxes, and air admitted to the latter. F represent moth-traps, which ,are oomposed of boxes, arranged so as to t over the projecting ends ofA the tubes D, andform, chambers g, to receive the eggs deposited by themoths. Apertures or holesyh, are made in the sides and tops of these boxes, through `which the moths pass, attracted by thel odor from the hive, which passes up through a perforated metal plate, t', on the tops of the projecting ends of the tub-cs D, as shown in iig. 2. The front upper parts of these boxes are provided with glasses, j, through which the interior of the chambers glmay be seen, and the latter cleaned out whenever necessary. Thecomb-frames" are each composed of n. single upper bar, 7:, provided with a central pendent bar, Z, as shown clearly in iig. A2. These frames support 'the comb firmly, and are simple and economical in constructiomand capable (if being readily fitted in and taken ot from the boxes. v'.lheyfalso insure the combs being built straight by thebees.
