SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 744,126, dated November 17, 1903.

To au whom it may concern/:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM I. Sr. JOHN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Surgical Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates particularly to a bedpan suitable forl bedside operative, obstetrical, and gynecological work; and the object of the invention is to form a portable device particularly adapted for such work and which may be be folded into small space for carryman o A further object is to form a supporting bed-pan adjustable to any position required for surgical work and to any-sized person.

A further object is toproduce a ,device which will enable the operations indicated to be performed in a clean and antiseptic manner, having parts permitting the immediate removal of all detritus.

With these and other objects in View the invention is hereinafter described, and is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of the apparatus. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 3 is a side view of the device folded. Fig. 4 is a plan of a detachable seat and apron.

Referring specifically to the drawings, 6 indicates a casing of proper size and shape to form a seat for the patient, and it has a raised rim 6 around the back and sides thereof. At the front the casing receives a sliding drawer or pan 7, which may be drawn to receive the detritus during the operation.

A frame to form a back-support comprises tubes 8, which are slidable in swiveling clamps 9, fixed to the sides of the casing These tubes receive the ends of afrod 10,` which is arched over the top and telescopes into the tubes, where it may be fixed at adjustment by the thumb-screws 10a.

A canvas back-rest 11 is laced to the rod 10. The lower frame, which serves as a footl and leg rest, is formed by tubes 12, which are slidable in swiveling clamps 13, also fixed to the sides Yof the seat-casing, near the front thereof, and

these tubes receive rod 14.

' At 15 foot-rests are indicated which are slidable on the tubes 12 and fixed at adjustment by thumb-screws 15a. The ends of the rod 14 are slidable in the tubes 12 and have adjusting set-screws 14a. Handles 16 are connected to the lower frame for obstetrical use.

In Fig. 4 a detachable seat cover and apron is shown, preferably made of. rubber and comprising a seat portion 17 and a tubular inflatable rim 18 and an apron 19, joining the front edge of the seat.

. In operation the detachable seat-cover is placed over the casing, with the apron hanging into the pan 7, drawn open at that time, and all escaping matter is conducted into the pan, whence it may be removed immediately. The adjustments of theback and lower frames permit and afford supports for the patient in the ends of the arched any position desired, and the device will serve Agical appliances and tables arenot available.

As shown in Fig. 3, the swiveling connection between the seat and the extensible frames permits the frames to be folded and telescoped closely beside the seat, whereby the whole apparatus will take but little room andmay be readily transported;

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination with a legless seat having a removable pan therein, of arched extensible back and lower rods pivotally connec-ted to the seat, and a collapsible back-rest on the back-rod.

2. The combination with a legless seat, of extensible back and lower frames pivoted to the sides thereof and foldable to substantial parallelism therewith.
