SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 740,924, dated October 6, 1903. Application filed February 18, 1902. Serial No. 94,683. (No model.)

Be it known that I, EUGENE @.RIGHARD, residing at Detroit, in the countyof Wayne and State of Michigan, a citizen of the United.
States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electric Sparkers for Explosion-Engines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to an electric sparker for explosion-engines; and it consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, as hereinafter described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the sparker mechanism. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the sparker as arranged in connection with its operatingcam on the enginecasing, and Fig. 3 is a section showing the insulated contact. Fig. 4 is a plan, partly in section. Fig. 5 is an elevation of an explosion-engine to which my improvement is applied.
A is a plate to which the various operating parts are attached and which is provided with a split ring or collar portion B, adapted to be sleeved upon the hub C of the enginecasing, through which the cam-shaft D projects. The split collar B is provided with lugs E and a clamping-bolt F, by means of which it may be tightened upon the hub C or loosened to permit of adjustment. The plate A is also provided with an outwardlyextending handle portion G.
I-I is the fixed contact of the sparkelgwhich comprises a post a, secured to and projecting outward from the plate A and insulated therefrom by a bushing b of any suitable non-conducting material.
At the outer end of the post a is ascrew c, at the inner end of which is the contactpoint d.
I is a lug projecting outward from the plate A, to which is pivoted a rock-arm J by means of a screw or pin K. At the free end of this rock-arm is pivotally secured an extension member M, which, as shown, is bifurcated to embrace said arm and is pivoted thereto by the pin N. The member M has a lug or iinger c, which projects over one edge of the rockarm J and is normally held in contact therewith by a spring O, secured thereto, and at its opposite end secured to the arm J. The member M is also provided with earsf, between which is'journaled an antifrictionroll g upon a pin h. It is further provided with an outwardly-projecting slotted portion t, extending adjacent to a lug j upon the plate A, while a pin 7c, passing through the slot, forms a stop for limiting the movement of said rock-arm. This pin has sufficient side 6o play in the slot to permit the member M to swing frorneither pivot K or N.
P is a contact-point projecting from the side of the arm J in line with the contact d.
Q is a spring sleeved upon the lug I and adapted to hold the arm J normally in a position Where the contact P will be separate from the contact d.
The arrangement of the parts is such that the antifriction-roll g will bear against the 7o cam R upon the cam-shaft D and in the rotation of said cam will be forced by the eccentric portion thereof so as to rock the arm J and press the contactP against the contact d. When these contacts are together, a further movement of the cam will continue to press inward the roll g; but inasmuch as the arm J can travel no farther the member M will turn upon lits pivot N and be rocked against the tension of the spring O. As soon 8o as the eccentric portion ofthe cam has passed the roller g the tension of the springs O and Q will restore the parts to their normal position, thereby causing a quick separation of the contacts P and d. Inasmuch as the collar B surrounds and is concentric with the cam-shaft D it is evident that the time of operation of the sparker may be varied by simply loosening-the clamping-bolt Fand moving the handle G, so as to turn the parts 9o around the hub C.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. An electric sparker comprising a rotatory cam, a member rotatively adjustable about the axis of said cam, a rock-arm pivotally secured to said member and forming the movable contact, a stationary contact secured to and insulated from said member, a breakdown extension of said rock-arm having a portion extending into the path of said cam roo and adapted to be moved thereby to first press said movable contact against said stationary contact, and then to break down, and a spring for quickly separating said contacts when said cam is withdrawn.
2. An electric sparker comprising a rotatory cam, a member rotatively adjustable about the axis of said cam, the rock-arm J pivoted to said member, the breakdown eX- tension M having the antifriction-roll g for bearing against said cam and the finger e, the spring O for yieldingly holding said linger against the arm J, the iXed contact in proximity to the arm .I and a spring for normally separating said arm from said contact.
3. In an electric sparker, the combination with a rotary cam and a bearing surrounding the axis thereof, of the member A rotatively adjustably secured to said bearing, the lugs I and]` projecting therefrom, the arm .I pivoted Io the lug l, the breakdown extension M pivoted to the arm .I having the finger e, the slotted guide e' engaging the pin 7c, and the roll g for bearing against said cam, the fixed insulated contact H, and the springs O and Q arranged substantially as and for the purpose described.
4. In an electric sparker, the combination with a rotary cam, of a member rotatively adjustable about the axis of said cam, fixed and movable contacts carried by said member, a member yieldingly connected to said movable contact extending into the path of said cam being adapted to be actuated thereby to first close said contacts and then yield while said contacts remain closed, and means for separating said contacts.
5. In an electric sparker, the combination with a fixed Contact, of a rock-arm carrying the movable contact, a spring for separating said contacts, a breakdown extension of said rock-arm, a cam for operating said rock-arm through the medium of said breakdown extension and a spring for holding said extension from breaking until said contacts are closed and then yielding to permit the same to remain closed for an interval.
